Ori and the Blind Forest is a two-dimensional platform game with RPG elements, produced by the independent studio Moon. The creators of the title were inspired by classic console games such as Super Metroid and A Link to the Past as well as the aesthetics of films from the Japanese Ghibli label. The game was created for over four years, which the creators devoted not only to preparing hand-animated graphics, but also to testing and expanding the character development system and a comprehensive skill tree.
The main character of the game is Ori, a young and inexperienced forest spirit, who will try to find out more about himself and the world around him during his long journey. During the game, we will not hear dialogues, because the developers decided to present the plot only through level designs and silent animated cut-scenes, which also build a specific atmosphere with the help of a well-chosen soundtrack.
The production belongs to the sub-genre of platform games known as metroidvania. This means that players travel around a vast maze-like two-dimensional game board that contains tons of hidden passages and shortcuts, surprises and secrets. Some of the locations are unavailable until our character receives a power or skill that allows us to open a closed passage or solve a puzzle guarding it. Ori has an extensive skill tree, which we unlock by gaining experience and reaching the next key fragments of the plot. During the game, we will face advanced platforming challenges that test our dexterity and reaction speed.
Ori and the Blind Forest's two-dimensional visuals make a stunning impression. With many animated layers, the boards seem to have a life of their own.
