The performance material available up till now for Dvorák’s sun-filled cheerful Symphony No.8 has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. The challenge of correcting it has now been taken over by the editor Jonathan Del Mar. Hehas taken into account the engraver’s copy, which was actually discovered in a rubbish bin at Novello’s in 1964. Its title page bears the words “Copied from my original manuscript” in Dvorák’s hand. This source proves that many ofthe readings contained in the first edition and faithfully adopted in all subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyist’s pen.This new edition with score and orchestral parts in an enlarged format is accompanied byadetailed Critical Commentary on the sources and alternative readings. J.S. Bach’s Four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach’s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the “New BachEdition”.At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries, he only completed it on the day before the première. Nevertheless, the piece was a rousing success.As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print, Tranquillo Mollo et Comp., issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print.Misha Donat provides an informative Foreword on the work’s history and genesis (Eng/Ger) and theedition is rounded off by a Critical Commentary (Eng) with a complete description of the sources as well as a page in facsimile.

The St. John Passion was first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday of 1724. Written three years before the St. Matthew Passion, it was a work Bach revised during the rest of his life, in fact he did not leave us a definitive version either in print or fair copy. The sources give evidence of four different versions used at four performances - 1724, 1725, around 1730 and during the last years of Bach's life. They often contain two or more readings for the same passage, or even different movements that on different occasions occupied the same place in the work.This edition uses the final version IV as its basis with alternative movements and readings contained in theappendices. The Makropulos Affair : Opera in three Acts, Brno Version

The new edition of Janácek’s penultimate opera “The Makropulos Affair” is a reconstruction of the work’s original version, which shows only a few deviations from the final version. The opera was premiered on 18 December 1926 at the National Theatre Brno with the composer in attendance. The second authorized copy of the score, prepared by Jaroslav Kulhánek, was used for the performance material. This copy also served as the primary source for the new critical edition of the full score. This edition features clearly marked performance instructions by one of the editors, the experienced Janácek conductor Tomáš Hanus. As they have been graphically offset, they can easily be distinguished from the original version.These practical suggestions facilitate the production of the opera and allow the conductor to study the work more easily. In this way, the performance material offers a welcome alternative to previous editions of the opera.

Attractive alternative to the well-known St. Matthew PassionUrtext from the “New Bach Edition”Straightforward and easy-to-play piano reduction in the vocal scoreUnique to the marketBach’s St. Matthew Passion as we know it today evidently had a long history dating back before 1727. It is unclear whether the work performed at the Thomaskirche on Good Friday 1729 was based on a still earlier version.Whatever the case, the surviving version of 1729 presents the work in a form strikingly different from its later incarnation. For example, the opening section ends with the chorale “ Jesum lass ich nicht von mir ”whichwas replaced by the large-scale cantus firmus chorus “O Mensch , bewein dein Sünde gross” for the 1736 performance. The well-known alto aria “Ach! nun ist mein Jesus hin ” is still assigned to abass in the earlier version, and the aria “ Komm süsses Kreuz ” calls for a lute instead of the later viola da gamba. Moreover, the pieces for double chorus only require a single continuo group. Otherdifferences can be found in the instrumental scoring and voice-leading. The early version of the St. Matthew Passion is thus a most interesting addition to the great concert repertoire. The corresponding volume of the“New Bach Edition” (series II/volume 5b) serves as a conducting score (BA5099-01).
