Liberalism and Education - Professor Francis O'gorman - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Liberalism and Education - Professor Francis O'gorman - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Liberalism and Education examines the damaging consequences of a liberalism that seems almost obligatory within modern western universities and in literature and art. In the 20th century what had been open-minded inquiry gradually gathered an assumption that judgment, particularly moral judgment, had no part in a university education. Liberal values became the norm. That is, almost complete tolerance and non-judgmentalism. In this shift, counter-culture became the most prestigious intellectual position. But the costs were not considered. In fact, as we are seeing in the rise of non-liberal forces, the casualties of enforced liberalism are multiple. Because the educated cannot, except with risk, question liberalism, those who have not been so educated have taken up the intellectual space left behind. And the result is populism, crude versions of nationalism, violent versions of exclusion, and a spurning of establishments that once looked secure. Because liberals have insisted that intolerance is morally unacceptable, the only forms of intolerance that we can now perceive are extreme. Liberalism has handed to the extremists the only realistic option for taking a different view. Liberalism and Education is a salute to thinking again about this: to re-assessing exactly those topics that liberalism has outlawed, including the place of order, law, authority, reason, moral values, and of judgement in contemporary intellectual culture. And it is optimistic that serious thinking can revive the virtues of what has been cast-out.

Journey into Europe - Akbar Ahmed - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Journey into Europe - Akbar Ahmed - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

An unprecedented, richly, detailed, and clear-eyed exploration of Islam in European history and civilization Tensions over Islam were escalating in Europe even before 9/11. Since then, repeated episodes of terrorism together with the refugee crisis have dramatically increased the divide between the majority population and Muslim communities, pushing the debate well beyond concerns over language and female dress. Meanwhile, the parallel rise of right-wing, nationalist political parties throughout the continent, often espousing anti-Muslim rhetoric, has shaken the foundation of the European Union to its very core. Many Europeans see Islam as an alien, even barbaric force that threatens to overwhelm them and their societies. Muslims, by contrast, struggle to find a place in Europe in the face of increasing intolerance. In tandem, anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination cause many on the continent to feel unwelcome in their European homes. Akbar Ahmed, an internationally renowned Islamic scholar, traveled across Europe over the course of four years with his team of researchers and interviewed Muslims and non-Muslims from all walks of life to investigate questions of Islam, immigration, and identity. They spoke with some of Europe''s most prominent figures, including presidents and prime ministers, archbishops, chief rabbis, grand muftis, heads of right-wing parties, and everyday Europeans from a variety of backgrounds. Their findings reveal a story of the place of Islam in European history and civilization that is more interwoven and complex than the reader might imagine, while exposing both the misunderstandings and the opportunities for Europe and its Muslim communities to improve their relationship. Along with an analysis of what has gone wrong and why, this urgent study, the fourth in a quartet examining relations between the West and the Muslim world, features recommendations for promoting integration and pluralism in the twenty-first century.

Love in Black and White - William S. Cohen - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Love in Black and White - William S. Cohen - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

Streaming Video on Love In Black & White now available at Expandedbooks.com Most Americans regard the World War II period as belonging to the "greatest generation," but it was also a time when religious intolerance and racial violence flourished. Shamefully, it was commonplace to see signs that read "Whites Only" or "Jews Not Allowed." It is within this world that this compelling memoir is set. William Cohen, born in Bangor, Maine, was the eldest son of a Jewish father and a Protestant Irish mother. Janet Langhart, an African-American, was raised in Indianapolis, Indiana by her single parent mother, a Southern Baptist. The book draws fascinating parallels between the histories of two people from different regions, races, and religions, as both are witnesses to and targets of the social tensions of the day. Throughout Love in Black and White, readers accompany Bill and Janet in their struggle to overcome to the barriers of ethnic and racial bigotry and hatred. The stories are rich and profound. At times they are amusing. Other times, harrowing. Against impossible odds, Bill would be elected to serve his country as a U.S. Congressman and Senator, and Janet would become a prominent television personality, activist, and highly respected businesswoman and author. Opposites in so many ways—in color, faith and culture—seemingly a bundle of contradictions, they meet in 1974, become friends, and eventually fall in love. They decide to marry on Valentine''s Day 1996 in the very place that once harbored some of the nation''s most prominent racists-the U.S. Capitol. They receive the surprise of a lifetime when Bill is asked by President Bill Clinton to serve as the nation''s 20th Secretary of Defense. It is a calling that proves to be life transforming for both him and Janet, as they lead, inspire and bring comfort to the men and women who defend our nation. It is at the Pentagon where they witness just how powerful our nation ca

NextGen Genealogy - David R. Dowell Ph.d. - Bog - Bloomsbury Publishing Plc - Plusbog.dk

DNA testing can serve as a powerful tool that unlocks the hidden information within our bodies for family history research. This book explains how genetic genealogy works and answers the questions of genealogists and individuals seeking information on their family trees. Now that DNA testing for genealogical purposes has existed for nearly a decade and a half—and been refined and improved during that time—it has established its value among family history researchers. It is now becoming accepted as another tool in the kit of well-rounded genealogists. This book covers this fast-growing application of genetics, empowering genealogists to apply this information to further their research. It will also enable general readers to understand how genetic information can be applied to verify or refute documentary research—and to break down frustrating walls that block the discovery of ancestors. The book describes the three major categories of DNA testing for family history research: Y-chromosome tests for investigating paternal (surname) lines, mitochondrial tests for investigating maternal (umbilical) lines, and autosomal tests for exploring close relationships. Expert genealogist David Dowell provides guidance on deciding which test to take and identifying which members of your family should be tested to answer your most important genealogical questions. Readers will also learn how to interpret the results of tests and methods for further analysis to get additional value from them.
