Bread and Henna - Maclagan Ianthe - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

Bread and Henna - Maclagan Ianthe - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

An engaging and authentic travel narrative, Bread and Henna relates social anthropologist Ianthe Maclagan''s experiences of eighteen months living among the women of a small mountain town in Yemen during the early 1980s. After a gruelling road journey, she is initially taken in by a family who provide support and hospitality - but charge extortionate rent. Maclagan then sets up on her own, struggling with isolation and practicalities such as getting water and cooking. One day, female neighbours establish contact by offering cuttings for her rooftop garden. Then, by throwing pebbles from their roof down Maclagan''s stairwell, they invite her to run errands for them.Gradually Maclagan is drawn into the life of the town and, in turn, takes it into herself. The women she gets to know have hard lives and limited choices, but prove friendly, warm, welcoming and curious. After initially attending community feasts as an honorary man, she later witnesses the hard work of women that lies behind spreads of delicious food offered to guests. As she learns the local Arabic dialect, she joins local women in long, enjoyable and sociable afternoons chewing qat. She is invited to attend weddings and other celebrations, joins visits to the sick and participates in mourning. As she integrates, Maclagan hears what the women say about their lives, about marriage, pregnancy and families - when asked how many children they have, women always include the ones who died - and about the struggle for girls'' education. Maclagan learns how women seem to have more freedoms after marriage than before, leaving their husbands in protest or to teach them a lesson. This extended encounter with women of a remote community furnishes detailed descriptions of a different approach to life and cuisine. Bread and Henna offers a window on a world that has gone - an intimate portrait of a country that is typically in the news for reasons of war and hunger. This memoir will enthral lovers of travel writing, people interested in the workings of different societies and the lives of women, and those who have travelled to Yemen - or have yearned to do so.

Camping Road Trips UK - Caroline Mills - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

WINNER - TRAVEL GUIDE BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 (British Guild of Travel Writers)Camping Road Trips: UK showcases a personal selection of 30 road trips throughout the UK and Jersey (Channel Islands), all suitable for campervans, motorhomes, long-distance cyclists and any other road user who likes camping. All have been handpicked by experienced travel writer Caroline Mills, who has over 20 years'' experience of camping, caravanning and motorcaravanning.Whether a novice camper or experienced road-tripper, a solo adventurer or family group, these self-guided tours provide inspiration to explore a region of the UK slowly and intensively. There are routes of all distances, from weekends covering no more than 20 miles to routes of 500 miles and more for those enjoying a longer holiday - all while overnighting in some of Britain''s most beautiful locations.Collectively the routes explore some of the UK''s very best scenery - from coastal views and mountains, forests and national parks, vineyards, lakesides and riverbanks, to pastoral idylls, wilderness and vibrant cities brimming with architectural heritage. They follow rural lanes, mountain roads with cautiously exciting hairpin bends, national A-roads of historic note and the odd official touring route such as Scotland''s famous North Coast 500. Routes allow time to explore unexpected destinations, while well-known places are here visited out-of-season to avoid congestion and encourage year-round camping. Many routes are themed, helping readers enjoy a region''s food and drink, discover its gardens, or visit historic and cultural sites such as Lincolnshire''s aviation history. Many encourage ''slow travel'' activities like walking or cycling. You can explore Teesdale''s traditional hay meadows and wildflowers on foot, let your tastebuds roam around England''s increasingly influential sparkling-wine industry, discover the beauty of Northern Ireland''s ancient Kingdom of Mourne, stay at a tea plantation on Dartmoor, or view Dover''s famous White Cliffs from a rib.Camping Road Trips: Britain is written in a highly personal style, based upon the author''s own travels - typically as a solo female or with her three children - and is designed to entice readers to explore a region further at their own pace, taking in their own interests to produce a relaxing and rewarding holiday.

Scotland's North Highlands (Slow Travel) - Emma Gibbs - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

Scotland's North Highlands (Slow Travel) - Emma Gibbs - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

Scotland''s North Highlands (Slow Travel) is the latest title in Bradt''s series of distinctive, widely acclaimed ''Slow'' travel guides to local UK regions. Written by a northern Scotland specialist who edits the award-winning JRNY Travel Magazine, this guidebook provides greater detail than any other to the whole of northern Scotland - roaming far beyond the increasingly popular 516-mile North Coast 500 (NC500) driving route. Coupling a wide, personal selection of places to explore with focused advice on travel practicalities, Scotland''s North Highlands (Slow Travel) encourages visitors to adopt a leisurely approach designed to tease out the region''s many special qualities - and contribute positively to local communities. In the far northern reaches of Scotland, Sutherland, Caithness and Ross-shire are regions that, by their very nature, demand to be taken slowly. Single-track roads dominate, skirting lochs and winding up and over moorland and mountains carpeted with blanket bog, settlements are few and far between, and you''ll often feel outnumbered by sheep as yet another flock ambles across a road leading to a crumbling castle, old fishing port or alluring ancient site. But biding your time is no inconvenience here, not when every corner reveals a yet more staggering view, when remote coastal cliffs throb with the cries of seabirds, or when following a sign down a potholed road leads to an empty cove of sand that shimmers pink and blue in the ever-changing Highlands light. There are no large settlements here - the second-largest town has barely 1,500 inhabitants - so visitors focus very much on the outdoors. Getting into wilderness is joyously easy: within moments of parking your car or stepping out of your B&B, you''re striding among scenery so enchanting and dramatic it feels like it''s been conjured up by someone''s imagination. Whether you crave clambering over rocks to discover secret beaches, watching dolphins leap, kayaking to uninhabited islands or trekking to the UK''s highest waterfall, northern Scotland is the kind of place that gets its teeth into you - a place that people return to again and again. Just the place, indeed, for Bradt''s Scotland''s North Highlands to provide the perfect travelling companion.

Thanks to the authors'' long history with the area, the guide also reveals the quirks and themes which give the Vendée its own distinct character, as well as straying just beyond the area''s boundaries to incorporate La Rochelle and Nantes, both entry points for those arriving by air and both offering urban distractions for the occasional rainy day.The Vendée offers all the benefits of a well-established destination, both with French and British visitors, with easy access times from the UK by ferry adding to its appeal. Popular with campers and self-caterers, its sunny climate and 140km of sandy beaches, combined with tree-lined canals and open marshland, make for a diverse outdoor playground. Bradt''s The Vendée and surrounding area includes information on suggested walks and cycleways and also summarises the best places for bird-watching. The region has no true cities, or even large towns, but the guide includes details of the many local museums which provide easily accessible insight into the bloody history of an area which has, at times, been central to the evolution of modern-day France.

Lapland - James Proctor - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

Lapland - James Proctor - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

This thoroughly updated fourth edition of Bradt''s Lapland is the only standalone guidebook in English to this wintry wonderland, a region spanning the northernmost fringes of Norway, Sweden and Finland where there are as many reindeer as people, it never gets dark in summer and never gets light in mid-winter. In this new edition, expert author James Proctor covers all the latest developments, including the most up-to-date information on where to see the Northern Lights (Lapland is the best region in the world for Northern Lights viewing) and where to go husky sledding, reviews of the treehouse hotels which have sprung up across the region, the latest details of how to fly directly to one of the Europe''s most far-flung destinations from the UK and USA, plus information on a wide range of summer and winter adventures, from hiking and wild swimming to snowmobiling, wilderness stays and staying in the Icehotel. Everybody has heard of Lapland. Everybody knows it''s the home of Father Christmas. Yet remarkably few people can accurately pinpoint Lapland on a map. Bradt''s Lapland lifts the lid off this little-known, enigmatic region and shows that there''s much more to Lapland than the man with the long white beard and the red suit. This is a land of elemental beauty with plenty to offer anyone who''s looking to explore the great outdoors without the great crowds. Lapland is vast and empty, a place of indigenous villages, sweeping forests, mighty waterfalls - the raw side of nature here is the region''s defining and inescapable characteristic and no visit is complete without leaving the creature comforts of the nearest town well behind. Whether on an organized tour or travelling independently, Bradt''s Lapland is the essential travel companion.

Cheshire (Slow Travel) - Kate Simon - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

Cheshire (Slow Travel) - Kate Simon - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

This brand new title in Bradt''s acclaimed UK regional Slow series is the only full guide to Cheshire, a county known for its abundance of black-and-white timbered buildings and which was put firmly on the map in the 1990s thanks to then-resident stars Posh and Becks. Cheshire is a county that confounds expectations, from the Cheshire Plain to the hills and moors of the Pennines and Peak District in the east and surprisingly dramatic sandstone ridges in the west, not to mention the Wirral Peninsula, flanked by the major estuaries of the rivers Mersey and Dee flowing into the Irish Sea. Home to premier league footballers it may be, but it is also a largely rural landscape and an area of farm shops, forests and falconries; meres, marinas and marshes. There is industrial and scientific heritage, too, ranging from Bronze-Age mining sites to the internationally important astronomical observatory and mighty Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. With this new Bradt guide, discover all of this and more: the county town of Chester with its fascinating Roman history, unique double-decker medieval shopping arcades and the most complete city walls in Britain; ruins of ancient castles; and reminders of the salt and silk industries that have been so important in the past. For a truly slow experience, Cheshire also offers a network of canals, perfect for waterside strolls or pootling along in a narrowboat, while Bradt''s Slow Cheshire details information for walkers and cyclists, too. Also included in this guide are gardens and parks, grand stately homes and structural legacies of the past (such as Port Sunlight), engaging museums, attractions and events. Local food and drink is covered, along with all types of accommodation, from B&Bs and self-catering cottages to guesthouses and hotels.

Dorset (Slow Travel) - Alexandra Richards - Bog - Bradt Travel Guides - Plusbog.dk

This new third edition of Bradt''s popular guide to Dorset - part of its distinctive series of ''Slow Travel'' guides to local UK regions - has been thoroughly updated to reflect all the most recent changes to the region. Where - and what - to eat, where and when to go and what to see are all covered, providing an essential guide to one of Britain''s most rural counties. The author, a Dorset girl born and bred, says: ''Many of Dorset''s attractions are well-hidden and known only to locals, who like to keep the county''s treasures to themselves. This guide takes you to those secret places and introduces you to some delightful Dorset locals past and present. Practical information covers accommodation, eating and drinking, and travelling in this unspoilt region.''Dorset is quintessential rural England: rolling hills, thatched houses, narrow, winding lanes and stunning stately homes and gardens, all of which make it perfect for slowing down and discovering what really makes the region tick. The enchanting Dorset landscapes described in Thomas Hardy''s 19th-century novels are largely unchanged and are likely to remain so as the county has the highest proportion of conservation areas in England. A sense of history is conveyed by innumerable sites of archaeological interest, including Britain''s largest Iron Age hillfort, Maiden Castle, and the county is trimmed by the spectacular Jurassic Coast, England''s first natural World Heritage Site, whose cliffs are constantly revealing their prehistoric, fossilised secrets. For walkers, the Dorset section of the South West Coast Path, which includes part of the Jurassic Coast, offers some of the most spectacular seaside walks in England. This guide provides walking routes with maps to help you explore some of the finest sections of the coastal path, as well as other walks around the county.Whatever your interest, be it local food, brewery tours, peaceful waterways, horse-riding, beach walks or simply escaping to an unspoiled corner, Bradt''s Dorset is the ideal companion.
