A4 Pacific Locomotives - Peter Tuffrey - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

A4 Pacific Locomotives - Peter Tuffrey - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The ''A4'' class of Pacific locomotives, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London & North Eastern Railway in the 1930s, was arguably the most distinctive and most famous type of steam locomotive built in Britain. Their streamlined design not only reflected the art deco and modernist style of the era but was also functional, enabling them to travel efficiently at high speeds. On 3 July 1938 the most famous locomotive in the class, Mallard, broke the world speed record for a steam locomotive, travelling at 126mph. This record has never been broken.A total of 35 of these beautiful locomotives were built from 1935-38. The first four were originally painted silver, included the word ''silver'' in their names, and were built to haul the glamorous new ''Silver Jubilee'' train from London and Newcastle. Their success led to a second batch being built from 1937-38, named after birds, LNER directors or British empire countries, for new streamlined services from London King''s Cross to Edinburgh and to Bradford/Leeds.Leading up to Mallard''s world-record run, the A4s broke several other speed records and the efficiency of Gresley''s elegant design ensured they continued in top link service into the BR era. particularly London-Edinburgh but also with distinction in later years on the hilly Glasgow-Aberdeen route.During the great withdrawal of steam in the 1960s, six members of the class were saved for posterity - Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Bittern, Union of South Africa, Dwight. D. Eisenhower and Dominion of Canada. Two of them found homes in North America and in the five decades since they have continued to delight the public across the globe. In 2013, to mark the 75th anniversary of Mallard''s record breaking run, all the surviving A4s were gathered together in the UK for the first time since the 1960s and fittingly Bittern set a new world speed record of 93mph for a preserved steam locomotive. This book introduces the ''A4s'' with a history of their construction, design and service for over 30 years with the LNER and British Railways, and an account of the career of the six remaining A4s in preservation. The book is well illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams.

HST: The Train That Saved Britain's Railways - Andrew Royle - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

HST: The Train That Saved Britain's Railways - Andrew Royle - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

In 1976, the High Speed Train arrived on a British railway scene where trains were predominantly in three colours; blue and grey with a large patch of yellow at the front. On the new trains the yellow warning panel was now strikingly extended down the sides of the power cars, thus beginning a transformation both in terms of the trains themselves as well as in their liveries, from BR''s corporate years to the variety that we see today. HST The Train that Saved Britain''s Railways is a photographic tribute to a train widely credited with rescuing Britain''s railway system from further decline. Few items of rolling stock have stayed in front line service for so long, more than forty years, least of all on longer distance duties. The HST has achieved this whilst leading the move away from traditional patterns of operational practice utilising locomotives and coaches, towards one of fixed formations. This was something of a gamble and it has had its down sides, but is now accepted as the norm. The book focuses on the numerous liveries carried by the HST fleet, particularly since privatisation, rather than on their technical and operational achievements. This colourful celebration of these magnificent trains shows HSTs in action in a wide range of locations across the network from the lineside and at stations and depots. It is a celebration of a great British success story which will be relished by the legions of enthusiasts who admire them.

British Rail Designed 1948-97 - David Lawrence - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Rail Designed 1948-97 - David Lawrence - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

British Rail Designed 1948-97 is about the design successes, and failures, of Britain''s most extensive state-sponsored industry. It is a story of people and ideas, movement and design, speed and colour. In a few years every aspect of the railway system, from printed materials to vehicles and buildings, was re-conceived and re-branded by the leading British industrial designers of the mid-twentieth century: individuals and teams who styled much of modern Britain''s environment and consumer goods. Design is about why things look like they do, to do what they do, and it is about things looking aesthetically right: with good proportions, and parts in good relation to one another. This is a comprehensive study of the crafting, operation and marketing of a national transport system, by which four steam-powered empires were transformed into a modern enterprise.Moving railway aesthetics from the consequences of engineering decisions, to an expression of the purpose and culture of a nation, British railway design has led world design trends. It has produced an extraordinary legacy of two and three-dimensional design icons, and is evident today in good, clear communication and product design, from the international Eurostar network to contemporary revivals of letter forms conceived in the early 1960s. With railways once again topical, as Crossrail, Crossrail 2, the HS2 network and other projects serve to develop and regenerate regions, it is timely to recognise the considerable achievement of British Rail design.

Hawker Siddeley HS.801 Nimrod - Chris Gibson - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Hawker Siddeley HS.801 Nimrod - Chris Gibson - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Outside of the Spitfire, the Nimrod was without doubt the RAF aircraft most familiar to the general public thanks to its role in maritime rescue co-ordination. But this was not the Nimrod''s primary role.As the first jet-powered dedicated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft, Nimrod was the result of several failed attempts to develop a replacement for the Avro Shackleton. On entering service Nimrod gave the RAF an exceptional ASW capability that, especially in its MR2 variant, was a quantum leap ahead of anything in the NATO order of battle. The Nimrod MR1s entered service in 1969. Based in Moray, Cornwall and Malta, they could transit at high speed and altitude to a distant patrol area before descending to deploy their sensors to seek out submarines. The Nimrod MR1 had been a compromise on many levels and the intention had always been to upgrade the original specification. This arrived in the form of the Nimrod MR2 in 1982 which incorporated new radars, acoustic suite and weapons. Use of the MR2s in the South Atlantic led to operations in most of the conflict areas Britain''s armed forces found themselves including the Balkans, Persian Gulf and over the mountains of Afghanistan. This book examines the operation and development of the Nimrod - the RAF''s mighty hunter - across four decades, recognised as one of the finest maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) ever developed. Illustrated throughout with photos and artworks, it includes potted histories of each Nimrod and its ultimate fate, details of the survivors and where they can be seen today.

Yellow Trains - Andrew Royle - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Yellow Trains - Andrew Royle - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The ''Yellow Trains'' or to be more accurate, the various measurement and test trains operated by Network Rail are a regular sight to commuters and passengers alike on all parts of the railway system. Operated by Network Rail on behalf of any number of the various companies charged with maintaining the network, their task is to check, assess and monitor the track, bridges and tunnels on both passenger and freight only lines. In the past these checks were done principally by staff on foot, and were naturally limited to the distance it was possible to cover in a set period, or by the visual observation of bridges and tunnels often using an old coach converted for inspection purposes. Today''s high-speed railway demanded something different and as such the various test trains have evolved filled to the roof with the most sophisticated equipment to be found anywhere. Speeding along the lines at up to 125 mph, they will check the alignment of the track and distance to structures, as well as locating defects for general care and maintenance for later attention or, if the defect is serious enough, immediate attention, in which case all following traffic is stopped until a detailed check and if necessary rectification is made. Author Andrew Royle spent many years engaged as a computer technician on a variety of the different test trains and in the course of his travels covered much of the network. His story is both technical and personal, from the purpose of the equipment and how it operates to the trials and tribulations of using it.

Southern Way Special 18 - Colin Scott Morton - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Southern Way Special 18 - Colin Scott Morton - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Following the hiatus in railway improvements resulting from the Second World War and its aftermath, the late 1950s saw work start on the Kent Coast Electrification scheme. As well as continuing the programme of main-line electrification started by the Southern Railway in the 1930s, this project represented a number of ''firsts'' - the first to employ main line multiple-units built to BR Mark 1 designs; the first to use a higher line voltage of 750 against the 660 of earlier schemes, and the first to see the complete replacement of steam haulage on freight workings by new electric and diesel locomotives. As with the earlier Southern Railway schemes, the new services brought reduced journey times and greatly increased connectivity, leading to increases in passenger numbers and new housing development as commuters moved further out.Sixty years on, the railways in Kent have arguably undergone more significant change than those elsewhere in the former Southern Region. Aside from timetable changes, new rolling stock, and the upheaval of privatisation, 1994 saw the opening of the Channel Tunnel and the introduction of international services between London, Paris and Brussels. While the Eurostar trains operating these services were based on the French TGV sets, on this side of the Channel they spent their first ten years working over the routes electrified with the third rail three decades earlier. The new century saw construction of a high speed line between St Pancras and the tunnel - the first new main line railway in Britain for over 100 years - cutting international journey times, and opening up a whole new range of domestic journey opportunities throughout the county. This Southern Way Special Issue looks back at the original scheme of 1959-62 and at the various developments since, bringing the story of the ''Southern Electric'' in Kent right up to date.

Vought F7U-3 Cutlass - Tommy H. Thomason - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Vought F7U-3 Cutlass - Tommy H. Thomason - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The Chance Vought F7U Cutlass was ahead of its time. In 1948, when it first flew, it could hardly have been more exotic or state-of-the-art: a tail-less fighter to be powered by two afterburning jet engines. It was not only to be carrier-based but also climb quicker and be faster than the Air Force''s new swept-wing North American F-86 Sabre. Developmental problems resulted in it taking too long to reach operational squadrons, which partly accounts for its relatively unsuccessful career. The Cutlass was designed too soon to benefit from the discovery of the area rule, which doomed it to transonic performance in level flight. Similarly, its lack of a horizontal tail was intended in part to address the transonic pitch-control difficulties being encountered at the time but they proved to be avoidable with one. Unfortunately, no horizontal tail resulted in it not only being radical in appearance but also having challenging handling qualities at approach speed. The F7U-3''s service introduction was also accomplished before the Navy perfected a rigorous process for transitioning pilots to new airplanes, particularly important in the case of the Cutlass and its unusual handling qualities, one of which resulted in a rare aeronautical phenomenon, the post-stall gyration. It was also first deployed before the introduction of the angled-deck concept that greatly reduced the degree of difficulty in landing high-performance jet fighters back aboard a carrier. The F7U Cutlass did eventually join the fleet and deploy, albeit to mixed reviews. It is often unfairly included on shortlists of the world''s worst jet fighters. It was actually innovative in many respects. This new, detailed history of the development and operation of the type provides a more balanced perspective on what was a fascinating aircraft.

Southern Way Special 16 - Colin Scott Morton - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Southern Way Special 16 - Colin Scott Morton - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

At 17.46 on Sunday 9 July 1967, Merchant Navy Class 35030, Elder Dempster Line, eased the 14.07 service from Weymouth into London''s Waterloo Station. This was the last steam-hauled passenger service, on the last steam-worked main line in Britain and so marked the end of an era. From the following day, electric trains took over services between London and Bournemouth, with diesel working onwards from Bournemouth to the end of the line at Weymouth. Much has been written about the end of steam, but what came after it has received rather less attention and yet, while the electrification scheme which ousted steam was carried out ''on the cheap'', it was ground-breaking in many ways, not least in representing the first example of high speed push-pull operation of passenger trains in the UK. In a curious way it was also the end of another era, for while third-rail electrification continued to be used on various Southern ''infill'' projects in later years and much more recently, on TfL''s London Overground network, the Bournemouth scheme represented its last installation on a long-distance main line. Just over fifty years has passed since the start of electric working. The original rolling stock has been replaced twice and many places on the route now have service frequencies undreamt of in 1967. This book looks in detail at the scheme from 1964 onwards, the implementation of electrification concurrent with maintaining the existing service, rebuilding and modernising infrastructure and, of course, the original electric and trailer sets as well as the pull-push operation beyond Bournemouth. In addition, changes subsequent to the original 1967 electrification are covered in relation to liveries as well as replacements for the original rolling stock in the ensuing 50 years.

Bill Hoole - P W B Semmens - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

Bill Hoole - P W B Semmens - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

This is a welcome reissue of the biography of one of the relatively few railwaymen in the age of steam who became what would now be described as a ''personality''. Bill Hoole was born in Liverpool and his first job was as a messenger in the Goods Department of the Midland Railway in the city. The fascination of steam locomotives soon cast its spell over him and he transferred to the Great Central at Walton-on-the-Hill-sheds. After service in the Great War he moved to London, passing out as a driver at Neasden in 1926 before moving to Kings Cross the following year.He finished his career as a top link driver on the East Coast Main Line based at Kings Cross. Driver Hoole''s normal locomotive in British Railways days was the now preserved A4 Pacific No 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, and it was with ''Number 7'' that he achieved the official post war steam speed record of 112mph on 23 May 1959. His name became a household word among railway enthusiasts on the East Coast Route during the declining years of steam traction out of King''s Cross. In his quiet unassuming way he always had time to answer every question, pose for every camera and help everyone who needed help. After his retirement from British Railways, Bill took to driving on the narrow-gauge Festiniog Railway in north Wales, where his cheerful personality made as much an impression on the visitors as it did on steam lovers during his main-line days. On his death in 1979, he was interred in the cemetery at Minffordd close to the Festiniog Railway, his gravestone bearing the title of his biography: Bill Hoole, Engineman Extraordinary.

North American OV-10 Bronco - Joe Copalman - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

North American OV-10 Bronco - Joe Copalman - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The OV-10, the world''s first purpose-built counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft, has had a long and varied career. Primarily employed as a forward air control (FAC) platform, the Bronco was one of the few fixed-wing aircraft flown by the US Air Force (USAF), the US Marine Corps and the US Navy during the Vietnam War. The Bronco made its combat debut in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps in July 1968. The USAF followed shortly thereafter in September 1968, and the US Navy initiated OV-10 operations in Vietnam in April 1969. The US Marine Corps used the OV-10 as a ground-support jack-of-all trades, providing visual reconnaissance, FAC, helicopter escort, CAS, search and rescue, photo-reconnaissance, assisting in the insertion and extraction of Marine reconnaissance teams, and spotting for mortars, artillery and naval gunfire.Following the Vietnam War, the USAF shifted its Bronco focus from jungle warfare in south east Asia to defending against large-scale armoured thrusts in West Germany and South Korea, before retiring its OV-10s in the early 1990s. The loss of two OV-10As over Kuwait was used by those within the US Marine Corps looking to the retire the type as an example of the Bronco''s vulnerability over the modern battlefield. In 1994, the US Marine Corps Reserve retired its last OV-10s, bringing an end to the Bronco''s US military career.Demilitarised OV-10s have seen extensive employment with civilian agencies in the United States, with NASA using several for numerous flight test programmes, including one of the original YOV-10A prototypes modified for extreme low-speed flight. OV-10Ds were passed on to the US Department of State, which modified the aircraft for use as aerial applications platforms, spraying herbicides on coca and poppy fields in Colombia and Ecuador as part of America''s war on illegal drugs. As the US military and other air arms throughout the world address the need for a light attack platform, several companies have put forth designs that draw heavily from the OV-10 - a testament to the type''s proven versatility and efficacy in the light attack role.

SEPECAT Jaguar - James Jackson - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

SEPECAT Jaguar - James Jackson - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

The SEPECAT Jaguar was designed to meet the requirements of the Armée de l''Air and the Royal Air Force for a light tactical fighter and a supersonic two-seat training aircraft. First flown in September 1968, the Jaguar went on to serve in both air forces for forty years. Jaguars were exported and licence-built in India, where they remain in frontline service today. Jaguars have also been acquired by the air forces of Ecuador, Oman and Nigeria.Best remembered today as a Cold War attack aircraft, the Jaguar offered a potent mix of high speed at low altitude, excellent navigational and weapons accuracy and a diverse payload of air-to-ground ordnance including tactical nuclear weapons and laser-guided bombs and missiles. While the Jaguars of the RAF based in West Germany helped to deter the Warsaw Pact during the 1970s and 1980s, the Armée de l''Air used their Jaguars in combat in Mauritania and Chad in West Africa. Both air forces participated in the international coalition following Iraq''s invasion of Kuwait in 1990, the Jaguar acquitting itself well during Operation Desert Storm. During the 1990s and 2000s, Jaguars served as peacekeepers in the skies over Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Sri Lanka. The Jaguar has also seen combat in other faraway places as diverse as the Andes and Kashmir in the Himalayas.Drawing on archival research, Jaguar: A Development and Operational History describes the history behind the requirements that gave birth to the Jaguar, its design and technical development, and service use in peacetime and war; including the Jaguars that have served in Ecuador, Oman, India and Nigeria. The stories behind the export deals that never came to fruition are covered, as are the numerous design studies during the 1970s for improved Jaguars to meet Air Staff Target 396 and the Big Wing Jaguar. Detailed appendices are included for all the Jaguars ordered by the Armée de l''Air and the RAF.Illustrated throughout with photographs, drawings and specially commissioned artwork, Jaguar: A Development and Operational History is a comprehensive reference book on the technical and operational history of the Jaguar.

abc Military Aircraft of the 1950s Combined Volume - - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

abc Military Aircraft of the 1950s Combined Volume - - Bog - Crecy Publishing - Plusbog.dk

For many people, the 1950s was the golden era of military aircraft development, and a time when the world''s air forces boasted probably the most varied and eclectic fleet of aircraft ever seen in peacetime. Aircraft in active military service ranged from a few left-over World War Two designs, through first generation jets and 1940''s re-purposed aircraft, to new machines at the cutting edge of aerospace technology, some of which would continue in service for decades to come. The UK armed forces alone were operating more than 100 types of aircraft, many of them produced by domestic aviation manufacturers. The US and Canada were also fielding a wide variety of military aircraft and starting to push the boundaries of speed and altitude capabilities. In continental Europe it seemed that almost every country had its own indigenous military aircraft; whilst rumours and speculation were rife about the latest aerospace advances by the USSR.The 1950s also saw the rise of the ''abc'' range of books by Ian Allan. Originally started as a series of ''spotters guides'' for railway enthusiasts wanting to record the identities of steam locomotives, the series grew to encompass hundreds of titles on subjects as diverse as ships, military vehicles, motorcycles, space travel and, of course, aircraft. Each abc book contained the known data and specifications for each aircraft type, together with a short description, three view drawing and photograph. In an era when public information on military aircraft types was often in short supply, the abc guides were the acknowledged reference source for enthusiasts, aviation professionals and even the military themselves! The original abc books have become highly-prized collectors items, but to bring their contents to a wider audience Crécy Publishing has delved into its extensive Ian Allan archives and produced this compilation of several abc titles from the mid-1950s. Covering military aircraft from Britain, the USA, Canada, Continental Europe and even the USSR, the types covered range from the famous and legendary, to experimental one-offs and rare designs which were destined for obscurity or even notoriety. For many, this book will be pure nostalgia for a lost era of classic military aviation; but it is also an important historical record of its time, highlighting the contrast between the break-neck pace of military aircraft development for the front-line, alongside the classic wartime aircraft still to be found operating in many parts of the world.
