O Tannenbaum : Traditional German Christmas carol

Jim Clements setting of O Tannenbaum for mixed voices. Based on a traditional folk song, it became associated with the traditional Christmas tree by the early 20th century and is sung as a Christmas carol.

Tristan Und Isolde

Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde for Voice and Piano accompaniment.  Tristan and Isolde is an opera, or music drama, in three acts by Richard Wagner to a Germanlibretto by the composer, based largely on the 12th-century romance Tristan by Gottfried von Strassburg.

Kyrie

This setting of the Kyrie was composed for Ensemble Nobiles, Leipzig. Stylistically typical of Heller’s compositions, it combines plainsong with a neo-romantic sound: the composition is based on a Kyrie trope from ‘in festis duplicibus’ of the 11th century, and the composer enriches the contemplative and meditative character by using psalm texts.

80 Chorale Preludes by German Masters of the 17th and 18th Centuries, edited by Hermann Keller.Most do not require use of the Pedals.'This selection of shorter and easier chorale preludes is designed tosupplement Karl Straube's '45 Chorale Preludes of the Old Masters' (EP3048), especially for use in church. We therefore selected only those pieces which can be used today - transposed, where necessary, to more suitable keys. Inthe case of important chorales, several treatments were included, sometimes in more than one key. Musical value was the primary factor of selection, but, where possible, preferance was given to compositions not generallyavailableelsewhere. Of the 80 pieces, 24 require the pedals; 33 do not use them; in 23, they are optional. Thus the collection offers rich material for organists at all stages of development.' Le Tombeau De Couperin

A moving fugal suite by French composer, Maurice Ravel which he begun even before World War I. This Piano version was completed in 1918 and in honour of the fallen soldiers, he called it Le Tombeau de Couperin literally‘Couperin’s Tomb’ after François Couperin, a 17th-century composer whom Ravel chose to represent the French nation.

Noster Nostri

Noster Nostri explores the idea of the past and the present, as seen from a male perspective — that of son, brother,father. It looks back through history, adopting a melodic and harmonic style that could have been written over a century ago.

Descend to Earth : VOCES8 Singles Series

British composer Ken Burton was drawn to the poetry of 18th-century slave and writer Phyllis Wheatley for his piece Descend to Earth. The dual troubles of pandemic and racial oppression in 2020 resonate with Wheatley’s concisepoem, the start of which recalls the Christmas/Holiday season. Written for SSAATTBB unaccompanied choir plus baritone solo, Descend to Earth will have a place in many programs with varied themes. It was commissioned by VOCES8 fortheir LIVE From London festival in 2020 and premiered by them with baritone Roderick Williams.

Requiem in C minor : Messa d'morti

The Requiem in C minor by Francesco Durante (1684–1755) is one of the most important works of this genre written in the first half of the 18th century. In his Messa de’ morti, Durante shows great creativity in combining traditional elements of church music with new ideas originating from instrumental writing and opera. The quality and originality of his Requiem make it an exciting rediscovery with the potential to establish itself as a core repertoire work of sacred choral music. Mainly known today as the teacher of Pergolesi and Paisiello, Durante spent much of his life working as music director at various conservatories in Naples and enjoyed great renown as achurch composer well into the 19th century. Despite its widespread popularity, indicated by the number of manuscript copies to be found across Europe, his Requiem never appeared in print. Word

A sequence of meditations on the Gospel in the 21st Century for mixed chorus and organ, setting version from St John's Prologue in the New Revised Standard Version and five poems of R. S. Thomas. Word wascommissioned by The Revd Dr Nicholas Fisher in 2011 and completed in December 2012. The commission was conceived as part of the Merton Choirbook project, bringing together a series of newly-composed works to mark the 750thanniversary of the Foundation of Merton College, Oxford, in 1264. In the event, the wealth of other new works chronologically ahead of Word deferred its première performance until 7 February 2015.

Messe G D167

Schubert's Mass No.2 in G D167 for SATB choir and Piano accompaniment.Franz Schubert composed his ‘Mass No. 2 in G major’ in less than a week (March 2 to 7,1815). Schubert was an Austrian composer, who was extremely prolific during his lifetime – despite dying at 31 his output consists of over six hundred secular Vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies,sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and Piano music. Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the late Classical era and early Romantic era and is one of themostfrequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century.

Impromptus

The sixth volume to appear in the new Chopin edition is the Impromptus, edited by John Irvine. The most famous of these pieces is, of course, the so-called 'Fantaisie-Impromptu'. Because Chopin suppressed its publication duringhis lifetime for some reason, this work has suffered more than most from the editorial 'free-for-all' that disfigured most Chopin publishing for at least a century after his death. In the last fifty or so years, propelled byArthur Rubinstein's discovery of an autograph score, the situation has improved markedly, and the new Peters volume is able to reflect the very latest source scholarship, both for this and the other Impromptus.

Alwyn and Carwithen: Piano Works

Doreen Carwithen and her husband William Alwyn were two of the most versatile composers working in Britain in the mid- to late-20th century. Between them they scored more than 100 films, as well as music for the concert hall, including the scores for Odd Man Out (Alwyn) and Boys in Brown (Carwithen). Daniel Grimwood's recording is a wonderful introduction to the couple's extensive catalogues of piano music, containing Carwithen's taut, neoclassical Sonatina and Alwyn's 12 Preludes and Grieg-inspired Fantasy Waltzes. This is warm, lyrical music which quietly pushes boundaries while always attractive and well-written for the instrument. This is Daniel Grimwood's thirdrelease for Edition Peters Sounds following highly-acclaimed recordings of piano music by Fauré and Henselt.

Christ's Nativity

The text comes from the pen of the seventeenth-century Welsh poet Henry Vaughan, a leading metaphysical voice during the Commonwealth period (1649-1660), when the republican government of Oliver Cromwell banned the Anglican Church. Christ's Nativity was commissioned by the Cathedral Choral Society of Washington D.C. with support from the Richard Wayne Dirksen Memorial Endowment Fund. The selected lyrics by Welsh poet Henry Vaughan fascinated me immensely and therfore prompted me to think about a specific musical environment for the piece, best suited for merging the music into this wonderful poetic landscape. This poetry brings about a strong mixture of the Evangelicalmystery of Christ's Nativity, mystically evoked by Nature, and at the same time reveals the optimism and drama of an ordinary individual that any human being can easily identify with.
