Bent Sørensen: 'La Notte' Piano Concerto (Score)

Score of the Danish Composer's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra written in 1996. Bent Sørensen writes: 'The title of this piano concerto came, as usual, very early to me, when my thoughts about the work had started to circulate, but before ?real? music was written down. I held on to the Italian title, even though its association with Vivaldi had no influence on my music, and even when German, French, English, and Danish titles covering almost the same content -?Nachtmusik?, ?Nocturne?, ?By Night?, ?Om Natten?, were just about to get the upper hand. The piano concerto has, then, in my opinion, something to do with night, but to describe this further is at least as difficult to me as it is to defend the final Italian title against those which were rejected. The Piano Concerto is in two movements. The first, swarming, is perhaps the mystery of the night, and the second perhaps the dreams of the night; with this, however, I have already given the concerto a more programmatic content than I can defend. Each movement ends with a cadenza and perhaps the last of those - the ending of the work that is - is inspired by a sequence from Bruce Chatwin?s wonderful book ?The Viceroy of Ouidah?: Or the Amazons howling. ?No, No, No. It was not the leopard that killed him. Not the buffalo that killed him. It was night. Night that killed him!?

Programme NoteIn REJANG for solo percussion I have linked elements from the music of the Far East to a more Western way of thinking. The title can be understood partly as a description of the instruments played, yielding local associations, and partly as having an undefined ritual flavour, inasmuch as it contains a particular idea.To the almost aggressive character of this work I have added a sound from nature, conveyed by a set of genuine Balinese Wind Mills (surely used here for the first time in a Western work), which endow the work with a more conciliatory transition between two areas which, however, remain what they are: tendencies pushing in opposite directions.The work is divided into five movements according to considerations of timbre. Some kind of order, or limitation if you like, had to be imposed on the almost chaotic events and ideas which lie behind at least some parts of REJANG. Ole Buck

Jesper Grove Jørgensen BESKRIVELSE / Description DENMARK REVISITED - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella (SATB) The University Choir Lille MUKO, conducted by Jesper Grove Jørgensen Soprano: Else Torp For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works, not least from the 20th century, but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danish text is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fully demonstrate the wide range and originality of Danish choral music: the particular, lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom, such as Vagn Holmboe, Bernhard Lewkovitch, and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin, including Hans Christian Andersen, Johannes V. Jensen, and Tove Ditlevsen. Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen 's Four Madrigals From The Natural World for 6-12 part mixed chorus. This piece incorporates texts by Les Murray. ' FOUR MADRIGALS to texts by the Australian poet Les Murray are composed of two songs (Bats’ Ultrasound and The Octave of Elephants) written for the Australian vocal group THE SONG COMPANY, and two songs (Cattle Egret and Comete) from my larger work SOUND / SIGHT, written for the Danish Radio Chamber Choir, but here arranged for six voices. The texts are pictures and situations from - or meditations over – THE NATURAL WORLD. Les Murray’s way of approaching this world is not in the least sentimentalor nostalgic; the poems reveal a true being-out-there realism; so basically the approach is realistic, but the creating of form elevates the material to an abstractplay, a daring and exuberant poetic language. These poems asked to be set to music. I gave up old idiosyncrasies regarding descriptive music, and surrendered to the madrigal, with its special so-called “madrigalisms”, which entails also animal-imitations. Programme Note TRIBUTE TO BALI is a 5-6 minutes piece for 3 percussionists, but also the original version for piano solo under the title ?Many returns to Bali? might be called a percussion piece (the piano being a percussive instrument too, at least since Bartok?s ?Allegro Barbaro?) ? referring in sound and attack to Balinese gamelan music.In gamelan orchestras the fastest layers of music are played by high pitched instruments, the slowest layers by instruments with deep octaves. The same idea is present in my piece, and gives the music a Balinese touch, although no Balinese themes or motifs are used. The motives and rhythms are my own brew, especially the snake-like rhythm called ?Pischop?, which ? played in many layers at the same time ? avoids the strong beats in a bar. The music might be described as a ?Tribute to Pischop?. It also refers to my piece ?Returns? for guitar (1976), composed after my first visit to Bali in 1975.The piece was composed as a hommage to the cultural rich civilization of Hindu Bali, after the bombings on the island in 2002. Percussionist Jacob Weber has, with my accept, arranged the original piano piece for percussion trio ? for his debut in 2005 at the Queens Hall at the Royal Library, Copenhagen.Per Nørgård (2005)
