Sim Shalom

Written for the Luther College Collegiate Chorale for concert with the theme, “Prayers for Peace.†Although the work is newly composed, the melodic material seems reminiscent of music that one would hear in a Hebrew morning service, and the melody is one that the singers and listeners will carry with them throughout the entire day. The piece can be performed in a variety of ways: as an unaccompanied work (beginning at measure 8), with piano, or with string quartet. The work is suitable for both concerts and worship services.

Winter Snow

"In December, 2014, my nine-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte, showed me 'Winter Snow,' a poemthat she had written as a school assignment. I was taken by the text: by its imagery, rhythm, andassonance. Charlotte gave me permission to set her words to music. Going Across the Mountain

This arrangement contrasts the unbridled optimism and resolve of a person heading off to war with the bittersweet nostalgia of leaving a special person behind, along with the promise of return. The repeated statements of the refrain are most effective when singers highlight the syncopations and rhythmic differences among them. Tenors should sing the final statement of "Goin' across the mountain" (m. 39) with a more wistful quality than at the start. All singers should enjoy the harmonic movement of the last line, and their carefully timed roles in it

This Is Thy Hour

This piece may be performed as part of a collection of four Whitman settings under the master title This Is Thy Hour. A majestic opening heralds the hour that unfolds to a rhythmic ostinato that acts as the underpinning for the text of This Is Thy Hour. A plaintive middle section contrasts with legato vocal lines for the text “thee fully forth emerging.” The work concludes revisiting the opening material, and ends with triumphant, homophonic chords before ending with a restatement of the softer middle section, expressing the wonder of that which the poet loves best. This lyrical setting of a poem by Sara Teasdale was commissioned as a gift for a consortium of seven high school choirs in Illinois. It begins with a reflective and contemplative tone that shifts dramatically to celebrate the power of singing—alone and collectively—to provide a sanctuary from life’s tribulations. Largely in four parts with brief occurrences of divisi. Duration: 4:45

Mary Had a Baby

"This gentle spiritual from St. Helena Island is often associated with the Christmas season, rich with images of the manger and the star illuminating the skies over Bethlehem. But a unique turn is found in the final line of each stanza: 'People keep a-comin' but the train done gone.' Train imagery is often found in Spirituals dating from this era. For the slaves, trains were synonymous with freedom and escape'whether spiritual freedom as represented by the Gospel Train, or the literal freedom the Underground Railroad provided. This metaphor adds a poignant and uniquely human exclamation point to the celebration of the birth of the one who cameto set us free." -Craig CarnahanDuration: 4:00

Little Boy Blue

This setting of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme is a lullaby disguised as a ballad. The scoring is for mixed chorus and jazz trio, but it could be performed with just a piano (probably best with three hands). Primarily in four parts, the tight harmonies and relaxed rhythms make for a cool but passionate presentation. The text allows for introspection on the stages of life that can provoke a thoughtful response from singers and listeners alike. Duration: 3:15

Joy : From I Will Sing To The Stars

Written for the Jacksonville Children's Chorus, this SSAA setting of a Sara Teasdale text opens with a sort of call and response between the voices. The music then transitions to a contrasting key and a stark contrast featuring the chorus alone. The beginning them is heard again to conclude the piece with the repeated text, "I love, I am loved." The first movement of the three-movement work, "I Will Sing to the Stars." Duration 2:50

Your Hand in Mine : In manus tuas

The writers' intent is to incorporate the sacred and the secular in this adaptation of the final, or seventh, of the Last Words of Christ, "Into your hands I commend my spirit." This movement, set for SSAATTBB chorus unaccompanied, begins with the Latin text and ends with Brian Newhouse's poem in English. The English text personalizes the experience and causes the listener to reflect on death in general, both Christ's and our own. Duration: 6:30 Part of the Lee Nelson Choral Series.
