**Not for sale outside of the UK and Commonwealth** Carl Nielsen 's Canto Serioso for Horn in F and Piano. Urtext edition score. The Danish composer Carl Nielsen was one of the most original composers at the turn of the 20th century. Based on the German Romantic tradition he developed his own musical language, especially in his symphonies that are still played very frequently. He also, however, often turned to chamber music settings. Canto Serioso was originally written as an audition piece for the Copenhagen Opera Orchestra, where the position of low Horn player was to be filled. This fairly short work makes the most of the low register and the instrument’s sonorous mid-range, making it a welcome addition to the late Romantic repertoire for Horn.

In his Serenade no. 2 op. 16, composed in 1858?60, Johannes Brahms keeps to the usual, smaller, scoring for this genre, using pairs of winds and horns as well as low strings (no violins!). His friend Clara Schumann was ?delighted? with the work, but the public reaction was restrained and even Brahms himself was not happy with some details. Thus 15 years after the first performance he rigorously revised the serenade. Henle are now publishing this definitive version from 1875 that was ?new, revised by the author? as a study score with the musical text from the Brahms Complete Edition.

Its many musical and technical challenges have earned it a permanent place in the teaching repertoire, yet it offers soloists a welcome opportunity to demonstrate their prowess and espirit, even in the low register.The ease with which a great composer accurately and skilfully probes the idiosyncracies of this largest of string instruments for expressive purposes - a combination of features seldom encountered in the double bass repertoire - is truly impressive. All the more astonishing, therefore, that the Elephant, although widely known, is relatively rarely heard in the concert hall.This Urtext edition of the score has been edited with critical commentaries, as well as fingering and bowing of the double bass part, by Tobias Glockler. The accompaniment is notated in E flat and F, and so the double bass can perform using either solo tuning or orchestra tuning.
