Quick and Easy - Marcel Danesi - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Quick and Easy - Marcel Danesi - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Food, no matter of what kind, is a substance required for survival. Stripped of any cultural meanings, it is a primary means of biological nourishment and sustenance. But in a cultural context, the types of food, how they are eaten, what social rituals are involved in etiquette, and so on, take on a greater value. In other words, outside of a survival context, food is much more than substance for ensuring such survival. It constitutes a meaning system imbued with subtle unconscious cultural connotations of all kinds. We eat, first and foremost, to survive. But in a social ambiance, food takes on significance that transcends this biological function, affecting even our perceptions of edibility. In America, we do not normally eat insects, by and large, even though they would provide nourishment. We do not eat them because of the negative perceptions and emotions we have projected onto insects. In other cultures, insects are often considered to be a delicacy. Clearly, food tastes are cultural tastes. So, where does the fast food phenomenon fit into this line of reasoning, given that it seems to go against historically-based cultural systems of meaning? This book will attempt to answer this question by examining the origin, evolution and meanings of the fast food phenomenon, from its neurological and social meanings to its recreational ones. Does the contemporary penchant for fast food exist in the brain, or is it a fabrication of a consumerist culture gone insane, as the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy so eloquently and satirically emphasized? Much has been written about the phenomenon of fast food, given the importance of eating to health and cultural identity. The goal in this book is to go in a slightly different, but hopefully significant, direction; namely, to examine the meanings of fast food in relation to the birth and spread of mass consumerist society, and its role in future societies. Fast food originated in amusement and circus culture, but it soon spread to society via urbanization, the automobile, and the need for quick and easy solutions to almost everything, including the preparation and eating of food. The book argues that, in the end, we are what we have made ourselves to be. Fast food is of our own making, not something imposed cleverly by some master capitalist plan. We eat it because it is tasty and easily prepared. The cultural meanings of fast food might even be intertwined with an innate pleasure principle, into which fast foods seem to tap rather effectively. Above all else, fast food is a mirror of the contemporary worlds penchant for a quick-and-easy approach to virtually everything, for better or worse. Given its proliferation to all sectors and levels of society, fast food has changed the social paradigm of eating everywhere. The book will conclude by assessing what the implications of this paradigm for the future are.

Numerical Modeling, Prediction of Ship Maneuvering and Hydrodynamics during Inland Waterway Transport - Peng Du - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc -

In this work, ship hydrodynamics during inland waterway transport and ship manoeuvring are investigated using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) based on OpenFoam. Validation and verification studies are carried out for the mesh convergence, time step convergence, sensitivity to turbulence models and dynamic mesh techniques. A quaternion-based 6DoF motion solver is implemented for the trim and sinkage predictions. Environmental effects on several inland vessels (convoy 1, convoy 2, tanker) are studied using the validated numerical models. Three important aspects, the confinement effect of the waterway, head-on encounter, and ship-bridge pile interaction are simulated. The testing conditions cover a wide range, including various channel dimensions, water depths, ship draughts and speeds. The ship resistance, wave pattern, Kelvin angle and wave elevation at specific positions are investigated as functions of these parameters. Ship manoeuvring is investigated using virtual captive model tests based on the MMG (Mathematical Maneuvering Group) model. An actuator disk is implemented to replace the real propeller. Open water test, rudder force test, OTT (Oblique Towing Tank test) and CMT (Circular Motion Test) of a KVLCC2 model are carried out to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients of the propeller, rudder and ship hull. Using the obtained coefficients, system-based manoeuvring simulations are carried out and validated using the free running test data. These studies reproduce real ship tests and thus prove the validity of our numerical models. As a result, the numerical solver is promising in ship hydrodynamics and marine engineering simulations.

Contact Dermatitis - Danka Svecova - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Contact Dermatitis - Danka Svecova - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Contact dermatitis is a non-infectious inflammatory skin disease caused by an offending substance localized at the site of contact. The prevalence and incidence are increasing throughout the world, especially in Europe and North America. There are two main groups irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis with the former being more frequent. However, more than 4,000 contact allergens are known to cause allergic contact dermatitis in populations, of which nickel is the most common. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed IV type hypersensitivity resulting from cutaneous contact with a specific allergen. In pathogenesis, there is a significant difference between irritant and allergic dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis is a nonimmunologic, nonspecific inflammatory reaction to a wide range of chemical, physical or mechanical hazardous causes involving the innate immune system without prior sensitization. On the other hand, in a delayed type of hypersensitivity, concomitant activation of both the innate and adaptive immune systems is required. Recent studies disclose the role of TH17 in the pathogenesis of allergic contact dermatitis. Despite a distinct pathogenesis of both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, there is no absolute visual distinction between both types of contact dermatitis. In general, irritant contact dermatitis tends to be milder than its allergic counterpart. Patch testing is a standardized diagnostic procedure used to confirm the causative allergen. The most common technique is an occlusive patch test, but in exceptional circumstances a modification of the patch test such as a photopatch test, open test, repeated open application test (ROAT), strip patch test or atopic patch test is used. Irritant contact dermatitis does not possess special testing. The diagnosis is therefore established by exclusion of negative test results in patch testing. Patch test may also be performed in infants and children, whereby the indications and testing technique are the same as in adults. In the management of contact dermatitis, the keystone is to cease causal exposure, meaning avoiding contact with the offending substance. In topical therapy, the choice of active substance is important, but a suitable vehicle disposes transportation to the site of inflammation. Selection of the vehicle depends on the clinical appearance and course of disease. The choice of an unsuitable vehicle may result in the drop-out of topical therapy. Topical corticosteroids are the mainstay therapy. Calcineurin inhibitors are employed in dermatology as an alternative therapy to topical corticosteroids with a better safety profile. Systemic treatments are used in severe cases and may provide temporary remission, but are not always suitable for prolonged use due to adverse effects. Alitretinoin is used to treat severe and refractory chronic hand dermatitis. After clinical clearance of contact dermatitis, the skin barrier requires restoration therapy provided by a moisturizing agent, which should be used for a prolonged period. The application of a moisturizing agent promotes epidermal barrier healing, prolongs the time to flare and reduces the number of flares. Most frequently, absolute avoidance of the triggering offending contact is very difficult, or even impossible. Therefore, protective measures to prevent renewed skin contact are indicated. Any type of symptomatic treatment cannot substitute this approach.

Prediction of Performance & Pollutant Emission from Pulverized Coal Utility Boilers - E Bar Ziv - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

Prediction of Performance & Pollutant Emission from Pulverized Coal Utility Boilers - E Bar Ziv - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

A three-step methodology was developed to provide reliable prediction of a coal''s behaviour in a utility boiler: (1) Extracting the combustion kinetic model parameters by combining experimental data from a pilot-scale test facility, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) codes and an artificial neural network. While the combustion kinetic parameters used in the model code will not correspond to the combustion rate of a single particle of coal, these parameters do describe the combustion behaviour of a "macroscopic" sample of tested coal.(2) Validation of the combustion kinetic model parameters by comparing diverse experimental data with simulation results calculated with the same set of model parameters. (3) The model parameters are then used for simulations of full-scale boilers using the same CFD code. For operational engineering information needed by the utility operator, the authors apply the predicted results to EXPERT SYSTEM, a boiler supervision system developed by Israel Electric Corporation (IEC). Four different bituminous and sub-bituminous coals with known behaviour in IEC 550MW opposite-wall and 575MW tangential-fired boilers were used to show the adequacy of the methodology. The predictions are done with the CFD code, GLACIER, propriety of Reaction Engineering International (REI). Preconfigured GLACIER models of the test and full-scale furnaces were purchased from REI and validated by our group. This book includes a detailed description of the methodology, test furnace facility and an example of the experimental and predictive combustion results from the four coals used to test the methodology. In addition, two previously unknown coals are examined prior to their firing in the utility boilers and prediction of their behaviour and operational parameters in the two boilers carried out.

Neurofeedback - - Bog - Nova Science Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a number of possible applications for neurofeedback in offender treatment, including perpetuators of domestic violence and various other forms of violent and anti-social behavior, certain forms of sexually abusive behavior, and criminal behavior of an obsessivecompulsive nature. A global description of this method is presented, followed by a brief overview of the empirical evidence of its efficacy in specific relevant treatment areas. To accomplish a targeted impact of neurofeedback on specific cortical functions, EEG-based local brain activity neurofeedback training was developed by Bauer et al. (2011). With this approach, an implemented algorithm automatically identifies and localizes EEG-sources in successive sLORETA solutions. Based on this information, the feedback is exclusively controlled by EEG-generating sources within a selected cortical region of training. In order to individually and precisely locate and define the region of training, the use of evoked potentials of known local origin is recommended. In one study, a total of 30 Iranian veterans with spinal cord injuries were randomly assigned to either neurofeedback, physical training, or a control condition. At the beginning of the study and four weeks later, reaction times and balance were objectively measured. Compared to the control condition over time, reaction times improved in the neurofeedback condition, while balance improved in the physical training condition. Compared to a conventional treatment condition, neurofeedback and physical training improved skills in specific areas of motor control. The authors go on investigate the effect of neurofeedback training on the motor performance and conscious motor processing of skilled dart players. The subjects consisted of 20 males. The research was conducted in five phases, including: pre-test, training neurofeedback, posttest 1, under pressure test and posttest 2. Additionally, the authors investigate the effect of one session of neurofeedback training on the motor performance of elite and non-elite volleyball players. The research was conducted in three phases: pre-test, training neurofeedback, and post-test. The effect of Quiet Mind Training on alpha power and dart throwing is also studied. A total of 20 novice dart players were randomly assigned to either Quiet Mind Training or a control condition. Dart playing skills and alpha were assessed four times: at baseline, 20 session later, under stress conditions, and at study end. In the penultimate study, this collection proposes that prefrontal neurofeedback training would be accompanied by changes in the relative power of EEG bands and ratios of individual bands with increased effectiveness at higher numbers of sessions. Outcome measures included EEG and behavioral ratings by parents/caregivers. Mu rhythm and bimanual coordination was examined in 10 healthy boys, 10 boys with high-functioning in-active autism and 10 boys with high-functioning active autism. Results indicated that high-functioning in-active autistic boys and high-functioning active autistic boys have a higher mean of relative phase error.
