In this work, ship hydrodynamics during inland waterway transport and ship manoeuvring are investigated using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) based on OpenFoam. Validation and verification studies are carried out for the mesh convergence, time step convergence, sensitivity to turbulence models and dynamic mesh techniques. A quaternion-based 6DoF motion solver is implemented for the trim and sinkage predictions. Environmental effects on several inland vessels (convoy 1, convoy 2, tanker) are studied using the validated numerical models. Three important aspects, the confinement effect of the waterway, head-on encounter, and ship-bridge pile interaction are simulated. The testing conditions cover a wide range, including various channel dimensions, water depths, ship draughts and speeds. The ship resistance, wave pattern, Kelvin angle and wave elevation at specific positions are investigated as functions of these parameters. Ship manoeuvring is investigated using virtual captive model tests based on the MMG (Mathematical Maneuvering Group) model. An actuator disk is implemented to replace the real propeller. Open water test, rudder force test, OTT (Oblique Towing Tank test) and CMT (Circular Motion Test) of a KVLCC2 model are carried out to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients of the propeller, rudder and ship hull. Using the obtained coefficients, system-based manoeuvring simulations are carried out and validated using the free running test data. These studies reproduce real ship tests and thus prove the validity of our numerical models. As a result, the numerical solver is promising in ship hydrodynamics and marine engineering simulations.

Multiscale integrated optimisation approach is applied throughout of this work including design of nanocomposite active components stable to coking and sintering; developing heat-conducting monolithic substrates comprised of refractory alloys and cermets (honeycomb and microchannel structures, gauzes etc) and procedures of their loading with active components; design and manufacturing of several types of pilot-scale reactors (with the radial or the axial flow direction) equipped with unique liquid fuel evaporation and mixing units and internal heat exchangers. Extended tests of these reactors fed by fuels from C1 to gasoline, mineral and sunflower oil have been carried out with a broad variation of experimental parameters including stability tests up to 1000 h. Performance analysis has been made with a due regard for equilibrium restrictions on the operational parameters. Transient behaviour of the monolith reactor during start-up (ignition) of the methane partial oxidation to synthesis gas was studied and analysed via mathematical modelling based upon detailed elementary step mechanism. This provides required bases for theoretical optimisation of the catalyst bed configuration and process parameters.

By the same token, type II diabetic patients are at higher risk for developing liver diseases, including steatosis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. On the other hand, established liver disease from any cause leads to glucose intolerance and peripheral insulin resistance systemically. The link between insulin resistance and liver pathology reviewed in this book suggests that insulin resistance is closely related with a variety of liver diseases. Recent evidence indicates that the AMP activating protein kinase (AMPK) in conjunction with p70 ribosomal S6 kinase 1 (S6K1) serves as a key signalling pathway regulating insulin-dependent physiological functions; thus, this pathway serves as a target for the therapy of diseases associated with insulin resistance. In this chapter, the regulatory role of the AMPK-S6K1 pathway is discussed in terms of enhancing insulin receptor signalling with insulin receptor substrate-1/2 and phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase activity, which may contribute to preventing and/or treating insulin resistance in the liver.
