Environmental Change and Sustainability: Management, Challenges and Research Opportunities examines a variety of underlying conceptions regarding sustainability, providing a number of different views on its causes and effects. A general model is necessary to understand the complexity and aggregate all strings to realize the notion of sustainable management for measurement and comparison of developments and therefore to stabilize the ecological footprint on an appropriate level. Additionally, the authors conducted a multi-level research project in a German grammar school, intending to find out how much students in the age from 13-15 years know about the described issues (climate change and missing sustainability) and how motivated they are in order to support addressing them. This study proved that an early training on environment and sustainability issues helps to raise awareness for these issues, as well as fosters a sensitized mind-set in tomorrows decision makers. Another study sets out to assess whether there is a relationship between environmentally sustainable practices carried out by hotels and consumer-based brand equity dimensions, such as brand loyalty, brand awareness, perceived quality, and brand associations. Quantitative research was performed, by way of a personal survey, to Spanish guests of three and four star hotels located in the Valencian region. The following chapter reviews extant theoretical and empirical research on the relationship between leadership and corporate social or environmental responsibility and suggests directions for further research on leadership and corporate environmental sustainability. Contemporary global businesses require leaders who can build sustainable businesses that benefit all the relevant stakeholders, indicating the necessity of an appropriate leadership model that highlights corporate environmental sustainability. Additionally, a new management tool for collection of used household batteries is presented in order to optimize the total costs and other environmental factors. The geographic information system (GIS) is used to provide spatial data management and service area analysis by methods implemented in the GIS network analysis extensions.

Sedimentary basins represent the vast repositories for the Earth''s natural resources, containing not only a large variety of metallic mineral deposits, but also natural gas, oil, oil sands and coal deposits; and therefore are a continuous focus of research. The formation of these economic resources in sedimentary basins results from complex interactions among geological, geochemical, thermal, structural and hydrological processes. This book is composed of seven chapters written by 24 authors from seven countries (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Ghana, India and Nigeria), reflecting the diversity of topical case studies in various regions. The main focus of the research described in the opening chapter of Salt Marshes: Formation, Ecological Functions and Threats focuses on the study of the plant heritage of the Fuerteventura salt marshes and their surroundings, together with the analysis of their ecological value, threats to the marshes, and of use and recent management practices. The methodology used predominantly consists of field work, photo-interpretation4, and implementation of a GIS from the information obtained and the database generated. The Fuerteventura salt marshes are of great importance because of their vegetal wealth and role as a refuge for fauna, especially birds and invertebrates. The subtropical saltmarshes of Brazil are located in the South of Brazil, between the north-central coast of São Paulo state and the central coast of Santa Catarina state, and have been studied over the course of many years by the researchers M.R. Bornschein and B.L. Reinert, resulting in their recognition as a new ecosystem. Despite several ornithological researches in these marshes, little is known about detailed aspects of their ecology and other groups of animals. Thus, the authors provide a general description of this recently recognized ecosystem and the ecological influences over the species that live in these marshes, resulting in the fragile ecological balance point of Borschein-Reinert, and propose a mathematical index to this balance. Salt marshes develop in estuaries where there is reduced wave action, which allows for a source of sediment and suitable conditions for marsh plants to grow. The vegetation generally provides a structural habitat on featureless soft-sediment bottoms, and so it is utilized by a wide and diverse range of fish and invertebrates as their physical home, food supply and shelter from predators. The authors discuss the way in which species such as insects and crabs demonstrate variable levels of adaptation to life in this intertidal habitat, as well as how species composition and abundance of benthic invertebrates are strongly influenced by changes in the vegetation.

Geomorphology is the scientific study of landforms and the processes that shape them. Geomorphology is practised within geology, engineering geology, geodesy, geography, archaeology, and geotechnical engineering. Practical applications of geomorphology include measuring the effects of climate change, hazard assessments including landslide prediction and mitigation, river control and restoration, coastal protection, and assessing the presence of water on Mars. In addition, understanding and recognition how rivers behave is crucial in the assessment of ecological conditions of streams and important for river restoration purposes. In this book, the geomorphological structure of river channel of small streams in terms of River Morphology Hierarchical Classification (RHMC) is analysed. The authors also develop a workflow that aims to facilitate a sustainable land-use decision making that has the concept of a spatial decision support system as its centre. State of the art 3D modelling technologies are applied and information retrieved from these models into a GIS are integrated. It is argued that if a planned land-use involves a strong interaction with the geosphere, geoscientific criteria need to be addressed in the most accurate and transparent manner. Moreover, the most effective erosion control in physical and economical terms is prevention, because once erosion processes accelerate, corrective action is not only expensive, but often also insufficient. The WEPP predictive erosion model is examined in this book, which has been validated for check dam watersheds in Mediterranean ephemeral gullies, in particular for two catchments with semiarid environments representative of the South-East of Spain. The Lisa Matthews Memorial Bay contains a population of the federally endangered Canby''s Dropwort (Oxypolis canbyi). A study of the soils, hydrology, and geomorphology of the Lisa Matthews Memorial Bay is also included in this book to aid in the management of the Canby''s Dropwort habitat in the bay and to assist in the restoration of the uplands to longleaf pine (Pinus palustris). Twelve pedons were described and sampled for determination of soil texture, pH, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and iron.
