Rolf Lovland/Brendan Graham: Sleepsong (Soprano/SSATBB A Cappella)

Sleepsong is a rich, Celtic-inspired song for choirs looking to test their abilities with a new and exciting challenge.Released by Secret Garden in 2005, the song was written by Brendan Graham and Rolf Løvland who also penned the Westlife hit, You Raise Me Up. This beautiful and peaceful choral version has been arranged by Desmond Earley for six part chorus with Soprano solo. It was first performed by UCD Choral Scholars on April 19 2012.The piece is perfect for choruses looking to take their singing forward, with specific directions for staggered breathing throughout offering an added challenge for ensembles. Although designed to be sung A Cappella, the arrangement includes a piano reduction for easy rehearsal.

Thea Musgrave: Take Two Bassoons (Bassoon Duet)

Many of these pieces explore some specific opportunities and challenges inherent in the technique of each instrument.There are four short movements: Jaunty, Tenderly, Angry and Running Wild.Note from Marc Goldberg.Thea Musgrave asked to meet with me in New York to discuss a set of duets she was writing, and we got together over coffee near Carnegie Hall for an indepth discussion about the bassoon. I confess to having had momentary misgivings when asked to list things that were difficult to do on the instrument, envisioning for a moment an etude of unforgiving notes, difficult dynamics, uncomfortable articulations, clumsy cross-fingerings and the like, arranged back-to-back in an endurance test to challenge the best players on their best day.What she has in fact created is delightful ? a charming set of pieces full of character, wit, colour, and yes, challenge, perfectly suited for student and teacher alike, and wonderful recital works to boot.I couldn?t be more pleased to have had some part, however small, in their roots, and am looking forward to calling these pieces ? and Thea Musgrave - lifelong friends.

Rosemary Brown: Piano Album

Rosemary Brown (1916 - 2001) was a medium who sensationally claimed that dead composers were dictating new musical works to her. She created a small media sensation in the 1970s by claiming to produce works dictated to her by Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Johann Sebastian Bach, Rachmaninov, Franz Schubert, Edvard Grieg, Claude Debussy, Chopin, Schumann and Ludwig Beethoven. The opinions of musical critics were varied on the merit of Rosemary's transcriptions but most agreed that in their style they bore a great resemblance to the composers' published works.Opinion is still divided about her claims and although there is scepticism, many musicians of note such as Richard Rodney Bennett, who said A lot of people can improvise, but you couldn't fake music like this without years of training. I couldn't have faked some of the Beethoven myself, have shown great interest.In 1969 she was put to a test by the British Broadcasting Corporation, who set her at a piano where she waited for the spirit of Liszt to contact her. In due course she produced a piece that she said had been dictated to her by the dead composer. It proved too hard for her to play, so another pianist was engaged to play it. The piece was subsequently studied by a Liszt expert, who said it had definite similarities to Liszt's work.

A total of 26 fantastic works comprise The Novello Shakespeare Choral Collection , which would work as a wonderful concert programme on its own, or could provide a wealth of options for choirs looking to expand their repertoire with a range of unique settings. Also included is a fascinating introduction by editor David Wordsworth, and notes describing each piece. Words written by indisputably the greatest writer in the English language can only be matched with music by composers of talent and renown such as these. The Novello Shakespeare Choral Collection is an essential anthology of stunning settings of beautiful words which will be performed and enjoyed for many years to come.
