Home to emerging economies, a growing middle class, and the world''s youngest population, Africa presents exciting opportunities for high-value products, including products bearing a geographical indication (GI). A GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin.From a niche topic of interest to a billion-dollar industry, GIs now command centre stage in the field of intellectual property (IP). This is no doubt due to the myriad of benefits associated with GIs, from price premiums to the development of rural areas; the revitalization of agricultural communities; and the expansion of tourism. It is hardly surprising that many stakeholders in the GI value chain, both from within and outside the continent, show a keen interest in protecting and enforcing GIs. In Africa, producer associations, governments, regulatory authorities, and the judiciary are however limited by the lack of clear information on how best to protect and enforce GIs. This book responds to the need for comprehensive information and practical advice on GIs in Africa. The first part of the book explores the economic and social opportunities offered by GIs, the legal framework within which African states operate at the international and continental level, and the mechanisms available to protect GIs. The authors adopt an Africa-centric approach, using real-life African examples. They propose a balanced discussion around GIs, remaining mindful of African interests and commitments. The second part of the book provides a detailed overview of the laws and regulations regarding GIs in the two main regional IP organizations in Africa--the African Intellectual Property Organization (Organisation Africaine de la Propriété Intellectuelle, ''OAPI'') and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO)--as well as in eleven African states: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa.The structure adopted by the authors allows readers to look up the factual background of the relevant jurisdiction, its legal framework, the applicable registration procedures, and enforcement mechanisms. The book guides experienced readers and newcomers through the topic of GIs in Africa.

English Renaissance Manuscript Culture: The Paper Revolution traces the development of a new type of scribal culture in England that emerged early in the fourteenth century. The main medieval writing surfaces of parchment and wax tablets were augmented by a writing medium that was both lasting and cheap enough to be expendable. Writing was transformed from a near monopoly of professional scribes employed by the upper class to a practice ordinary citizens could afford. Personal correspondence, business records, notebooks on all sorts of subjects, creative writing, and much more flourished at social levels where they had previously been excluded by the high cost of parchment. Steven W. May places literary manuscripts and in particular poetic anthologies in this larger scribal context, showing how its innovative features affected both authorship and readership.As this amateur scribal culture developed, the medieval professional culture expanded as well. Classes of documents formerly restricted to parchment often shifted over to paper, while entirely new classes of documents were added to the records of church and state as these institutions took advantage of relatively inexpensive paper.Paper stimulated original composition by making it possible to draft, revise, and rewrite works in this new, affordable medium. Amateur scribes were soon producing an enormous volume of manuscript works of all kinds--works they could afford to circulate in multiple copies. England''s ever-increasing literate population developed an informal network that transmitted all kinds of texts from single sheets to book-length documents efficiently throughout the kingdom. The operation of restrictive coteries had little if any role in the mass circulation of manuscripts through this network. However, paper was cheap enough that manuscripts could also be readily disposed of (unlike expensive parchment). More than 90% of the output from this scribal tradition has been lost, a fact that tends to distort our understanding and interpretation of what has survived. May illustrates these conclusions with close analysis of representative manuscripts.

That sovereign debt composition has partisan political roots provides insights for scholars in political science, international relations, economics, sociology, and public administration that work on sovereign debt.Sovereign debt composition enhances or limits the capacity of an EM government to contribute to social and economic development. Many EMs depend on foreign currency debt. How much external debt an EM government owes, the cost of that debt, the maturity of that debt, and the conditions attached to that debt all determine the political and economic opportunities and risks associated with a government''s borrowings. EMs borrow from different sources each year, leading them to build different sovereign debt structures over time. Some prioritize cheap yet conditional official credit, which constrains policy autonomy but enhances debt sustainability. Others prioritize comparatively expensive bond markets, which enhances policy autonomy but brings more expensive repayment obligations on to national balance sheets. As countries accumulate debt, the borrowing choices they make come to have important effects on fiscal space, debt sustainability, and development.

Since little was certain about the mysteries of reproduction, the topic lent itself to a rich array of theories. The insides of women''s reproductive bodies provided a kind of open interpretive space, a place where many different models of reproductive processes might be plausible. These models were profoundly shaped by cultural concerns; they afforded many ways to discuss and make sense of social, political, and economic changes such as the Protestant Reformation and the Civil War. They gave ordinary people ways of thinking about the changing relations between men and women that characterized these larger social shifts. Fissell offers a new way to think about the history of the body by focusing on women''s bodies, showing how ideas about conception, pregnancy, and childbirth were also ways of talking about gender relations and thus all relations of power. Where other histories of the body have focused on learned texts and male bodies, this study looks at the small books and pamphlets that ordinary people read and listened to - and provides new ways to understand how such people experienced political conflicts and social change.

The book seeks to situate caste as a discursive category in the discussion of Partition in Bengal. In conventional narratives of Partition, the role of the Dalit or the Scheduled Castes is either completely ignored or mentioned in passing. The authors addresse this discursive absence and argues that in Bengal the Dalits were neither passive onlookers nor accidental victims of Partition politics and violence, which ruptured their unity and weakened their political autonomy. They were the worst victims of Partition. When the Dalit peasants of Eastern Bengal began to migrate to India after 1950, they were seen as the ''burden'' of a frail economy of West Bengal, and the Indian state did not provide them with a proper rehabilitation package. They were first segregated in fenced refugee camps where life was unbearable, and then dispersed to other parts of India - first to the Andaman Islands and the neighbouring states, and then to the inhospitable terrains of Dandakaranya, where they could be used as cheap labour for various development projects. This book looks critically at their participation in Partition politics, the reasons for their migration three years after Partition, their insufferable life and struggles in the refugee camps, their negotiations with caste and gender identities in these new environments, their organized protests against camp maladministration, and finally their satyagraha campaigns against the Indian state''s refugee dispersal policy. This book looks at how refugee politics impacted Dalit identity and protest movements in post-Partition West Bengal.
