Discovering Mathematics: Workbook 1A - Victor Chow - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This write-in Workbook is for Year 7 Foundation tier students. It supports Student Book 1A in the Discovering Mathematics series, with exercises split into the corresponding chapter sections. The series is adapted from the leading Singapore course to fully match the English Key Stage 3 National Curriculum. The Discovering Mathematics workbooks follow authentic mastery principles. Exercises incorporate ''intelligent practice'', with careful variation of numbers to reinforce and deepen learning. Questions are differentiated into two levels: Level 1 for basic fluency practice and Level 2 for greater challenge, with additional integrated questions testing the student''s ability to apply their learning. Problem-solving questions are identified throughout, and questions related to science and finance are clearly flagged to encourage students'' connections of mathematical ideas across other subjects. The series also encourages use of ICT and research, with exploration exercises helping students to internalise concepts. This Workbook is designed to enable students to track their progress through a self-assessment checklist at the front. Short answers on the free accompanying website allow students to quickly identify and correct misconceptions. Fully-worked solutions containing GCSE grades are available to teachers on the accompanying Kerboodle digital resource to facilitate support with detailed workings.

Run, Swim, Throw, Cheat - Chris Cooper - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Drugs in sport are big news and the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport is common. Here, Chris Cooper, a top biochemist at the University of Essex, looks at the science behind drugs in sport. Using the performance of top athletes, Cooper begins by outlining the limits of human performance. Showing the basic problems of human biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy, he looks at what stops us running faster, throwing longer, or jumping higher. Using these evidence-based arguments he shows what the body can, and cannot, do. There is much curiosity about why certain substances are used, how they are detected, and whether they truly have an effect on the body. Cooper explains how these drugs work and the challenges of testing for them, putting in to context whether the ''doping'' methods of choice are worth the risk or the effort. Exploring the moral, political, and ethical issues involved in controlling drug use, Cooper addresses questions such as ''What is cheating?'', ''What compounds are legal and why?'', ''Why do the classification systems change all the time?'', and ''Should all chemicals be legal, and what effect would this have on sport?''. Looking forward, he examines the recent work to study the physical limitations of rat and mice behaviour. He shows that, remarkably, simple genetic experiments producing ''supermice'' suggest that there may be ways of improving human performance too, raising ethical and moral questions for the future of sport. The paperback includes a new introduction which considers the issues surrounding the 2012 Lance Armstrong doping scandal.

Gravity - Timothy (lecturer In Theoretical Cosmology Clifton - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Gravity - Timothy (lecturer In Theoretical Cosmology Clifton - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

Gravity is one of the four fundamental interactions that exist in nature. It also has the distinction of being the oldest, weakest, and most difficult force to quantize. Understanding gravity is not only essential for understanding the motion of objects on Earth, but also the motion of all celestial objects, and even the expansion of the Universe itself. It was the study of gravity that led Einstein to his profound realisations about the nature of space and time. Gravity is not only universal, it is also essential for understanding the behaviour of the Universe, and all astrophysical bodies within it. In this Very Short Introduction Timothy Clifton looks at the development of our understanding of gravity since the early observations of Kepler and Newtonian theory. He discusses Einstein''s theory of gravity, which now supplants Newton''s, showing how it allows us to understand why the frequency of light changes as it passes through a gravitational field, why GPS satellites need their clocks corrected as they orbit the Earth, and why the orbits of distant neutron stars speed up. Today, almost 100 years after Einstein published his theory of gravity, we have even detected the waves of gravitational radiation that he predicted. Clifton concludes by considering the testing and application of general relativity in astrophysics and cosmology, and looks at dark energy and efforts such as string theory to combine gravity with quantum mechanics.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
