Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus - although known as the Miniature Chusan Palm Tree - and often fondly referred to as WaggiesOriginating from Japan and Korea, this hardy palm is well used to surviving the typhoon season, so it copes well with exposed, windy positions. The leaves are much more rigid and compact than the very popular Trachycarpus Fortunei, also a hardy palm suited to growing outdoors in the UK. Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is one of the most beautiful of the palms that we are able to grow here in the UK and Ireland. Also known as Waggy, and Dwarf Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus has its origins in Germany, where it was named by Ludwig Winter to honour his fellow horticulturalist, Albert Wagner. As it turns out, Wagner had imported a quantity of this more compact Trachycarpus from Japan; and eventually sold his entire inventory to Mr Winter. If you are seeking an exquisite specimen to bring an exotic style to your garden, Trachycarpus wagnerianus is certainly a specimen you should be adding. The hardiest of palms grown in our region, Dwarf Chusan Palm will tolerate snow, frost, and temperatures down to -15OC. Even in the strongest winds, this cold tolerant palm will maintain its shape and appearance. Unlike many exotics, this offering is truly a low maintenance delight.Waggies will grow to 5-6 metres in ultimate height, and about 2 metres in spread (over 50 years) ; and have a slow growth habit. They prefer full sun but can do well in partial shade exposures as well.  Provide a moist, rich, and well-drained soil media of near neutral, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline pH.One of the most prominent features of Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is their small, stiff leaves, making them much tougher than the ‘standard’ and larger Trachycarpus Fortunei. Another feature of the smallish leaves is that aside from their jaunty, attractive appearance, they do make it easier to accommodate when space is at a premium. The popularity of this variety of Trachycarpus continues to grow across the UK and Ireland with its unique silhouette adding an outstanding architectural feature to your exotics. More compact than the Trachycarpus Fortunei and its markedly more hardy tolerance to our climate, this is an outstanding hardy palm to add to your garden space for this year.Paramount Plants specialises in these tropical plants that are hardy enough for the UK climate.

Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney for Sale Online UK

Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney is a large, evergreen hybrid rhododendron with glorious rose-pink flowers. It’s perfect for a large mixed border or a well-watered container.  Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney was bred in Whitney, Washington USA in 1954. It’s proved a firm favourite in UK gardens for its vigorous evergreen leaves and pretty blooms. The fleshy textured evergreen foliage grows up to 11 centimetres long on strong woody stems that tend to grow outwards as well as up. In late spring and early summer large pink buds appear in clusters that bloom into funnel-shaped deep pink flowers with brown dappling beneath the petals. The blooms are large measuring up to ten centimetres in diameter. The flowers grow in ball-shaped trusses 10 to 20 flowers each. Flowers fade and fall before autumn, but its textured foliage remains all year. Height And Spread Of Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyThis hybrid is a tall variety that eventually reaches a bushy height of 4 metres eventually. Its large showy blooms can’t be missed. It works well as part of a woodland garden or mixed border with its sister Rhododendron Van and will grow in a large well-watered container in a sheltered spot.  As it has no scent it’s a good choice for hayfever sufferers and its evergreen foliage brings shape and colour to a bare winter garden. How To Care For Rhododendron Anna Rose WhitneyRhododendron Anna Rose Whitney is a woodland plant that prefers partial shade and damp soil that’s humus-rich. It grows best in acidic soils and does not perform well in chalk. If you love this shrub but have chalky soils consider container gardening with ericaceous compost and frequent waterings. There is no need to prune Rhododendron Anna Rose Whitney other than removing any broken stems and dead flowers. If you wish to restrict its height, prune out crowded shoots in spring. Treated to a yearly application of rich leaf mould mulch on acid soil this rhododendron is a strikingly dramatic and fuss-free shrub.

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor - The White Pine or White FirA beautiful conifer tree, the Abies Concolor tree, often known as the White Fir Tree or Concolor Fir has silvery blue glaucous foliage and is native to the mountains of western North America. It gets its name White Fir from the white colour of its bark. It has a classic Christmas tree shape and indeed the Concolor Fir is often used as a Christmas tree in America.Abies Concolor will grow steadily into a pyramid shape reaching 25 metres in height over ten to twenty years but it can be happily pruned at any height you require. Colour and height are the main reasons a gardener will choose a White Fir Tree. The Abies Concolor’s needles are a silvery-blue glaucous shade complemented by the white bark from which it draws its name. These colours are an interesting twist on the standard green fir tree.Branches fall naturally into regular horizontal fan arrangements and six to 12 centimetre sized cones develop in autumn. At first these are yellow or a light purple shade, later ripening into the traditional brown cones that release winged seeds.White Fir Trees are fully hardy throughout the UK. They are able to withstand heat as well as cold temperatures with ease if their roots are kept from waterlogged conditions.Abies Concolor make good specimen trees when they are planted out individually. In the winter months they can be decorated with outdoor lights for a traditional Christmas effect, or you can try growing one in a container to restrict its size and move it indoors for a short while. A living Christmas tree will happily move back outdoors after the festive season if it is watered well and kept away from radiators.Abies Concolor or the Concolor Fir can be used as a hedge or evergreen screening or ornamentally in a garden that needs some winter interest. Large specimens are good for landscaping designs often fulfilling both a practical and ornamental role at the same time.Large free-growing trees can reach a height of 25m but they can be kept at a manageable height by cutting the leader branch. There is no need to prune a Concolor fir other than to restrict its height because they retain a conical shape as they grow, however, keeping your white fir tree shorter will encourage bushiness.White Fir Trees perform best in rich well-drained soils that are slightly acidic but they will grow in most conditions provided the soil is not heavy clay. They appreciate full sun and mulch around their roots in spring time.Fir trees are not just for Christmas because they make interesting architectural shapes in a garden, create wildlife habitats and will boost your outdoor space with year round colour. It’s worth considering a beautiful white fir tree if you need to fill a large space or want to landscape a lengthy piece of lawn.
