Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech Hedging for sale Online UK

Fagus Sylvatica or Common Beech TreeFagus Sylvatica (also known as the Common Beech or European Beech) is native to South Wales and the southern United Kingdom and belongs to the family of Fagaceae. This is a popular hedging variety of Fagus Sylvatica, which although deciduous, gets its new leaves early every year. In the autumn, its old leaves drop off very slowly, often remaining on the plant throughout the winter. These features make it suitable for hedging. In fact, beech is one of the most popular deciduous hedging plants in the UK. In the winter season we also have this plant available in bare root form. Fagus Sylvatica produces new foliage between March and April each year. The shape of the leaves are ovate. New leaves emerge in spring in hues of beautiful green-yellow. As the foliage matures over the summer, the leaves become a deeper green. In autumn, they turn reddish-brown. Fagus Sylvatica is monoecious, meaning it produces both male and female flowers, which it produces during late April and May. Female flowers grow in pairs and are green. Male flowers are in the form of catkins and drape elegantly from long stalks. After the flowering period, edible beech nuts are produced, which these days, are mainly used to feed livestock. Whole enriched oil-nuts start forming in autumn, around September. The leaves of common beech take some time to decay completely. Fagus Sylvatica can live for hundreds of years and is UK hardy for all regions of United Kingdom. Beech is wild-life friendly providing shelter and food for many species. It is not overly fussy about soil type but thrives in limestone or chalky soils. Ligustrum Ovalifolium Privet Hedging Plants UK & Online.

Ligustrum Ovalifolium Privet Hedging Plants UK & Online.

Ligustrum Ovalifolium (Privet Hedging)Ligustrum Ovalifolium is more commonly known as privet (or hedging privet and also oval-leaved privet). Privet is Britain’s best-loved and perhaps most popular hedging plant, explaining why it is often referred to as hedging privet.  Ligustrum Ovalifolium is fast growing with a very dense habit. Privet hedging plants will rapidly form an impenetrable hedge, ideal for screening and privacy. Privet is a tough and hardy shrub originating from Japan. It is semi-evergreen but throughout most UK winters it does retain its foliage unless the weather is very severe. Its dense branches provide safe and secure nesting for small birds.  Privet has attractive lush green foliage with flashes of greenish-yellow from the leaf underside. The leaves, as the name Ovalifolium suggests, are oval shaped.  You can keep a Ligustrum Ovalifolium hedge at any height you like. From a low decorative privet hedge of 3 to 4 feet, right up to 15 feet or more if required. Privet is extremely tolerant of clipping and shaping and can be clipped several times per year.  Some gardeners prefer a more informal hedge than the strict geometric lines of a formal clipped hedge. Ligustrum Ovalifolium works just as well when grown more informally. Clipped less often, it will produce panicles of tiny, white flowers in summer and black berries in autumn, thus becoming a real wild-life magnet in your garden as well as providing solid screening and privacy.  Privet Hedging Plants will benefit from a bit of feeding for the first few years until they get established. See also Golden Privet - Ligustrum Ovalifolium Aureum

Hornbeam Hedge Plants Carpinus Betulus Hedging Buy Online UK

Hornbeam Hedge Plants Carpinus Betulus Hedging Buy Online UK

Hornbeam Hedge or Carpinus Betulus HedgingCarpinus Betulus or Common Hornbeam is an indigenous tree species in Britain and is one of the finest of our native hedging plants.Dense and fast growing, Carlinus Betulus is particularly suited to shaping, trimming and creating espaliers or clear stem trees. It is hardly surprising then that it makes an excellent hedge. Hornbeam hedges, although considered similar and often compared to Beech Hedging, are in our opinion  infinitely superior plants for hedging. Hornbeams have beautiful vibrant green foliage in spring and although they are deciduous, with a summer trim the leaves will change to a beautiful tawny yellow colour in autumn and in all but the harshest winters will remain on the stems creating a lovely golden coloured hedge throughout the winter months. In the winter season we also have hornbeam hedge plants available in bare root form. Historically Hornbeam was one of the UK's most treasured trees - creating incredibly tough wood, hornbeam was prized for many, many uses including creating tools, for fuel and for making excellent charcoal. With legendary hardiness, a Hornbeam hedge will grow in most well drained, moist soils and will happily grow in partial shade, although will be most luscious and fast growing in full sun. We have many sizes of Carpinus Betulus Hedging available from just under 1 metre tall (excluding the pot) to our square columns standing up to 3 metres tall for those in need of instant screening. For mixed beech and hornbeam hedging, see also Fagus Sylvatica Common Beech for hedging.

Mahonia Aquifolium or Oregon Grape Low Spreading Mahonia. Low growing Mahonia.

Mahonia Aquifolium or Oregon Grape Low Spreading Mahonia. Low growing Mahonia.

Mahonia Aquifolium, otherwise known as Oregon Grape, is a hardy, attractive, evergreen plant that has considerable ornamental value, as well as producing edible fruit. It’s a versatile landscape plant for UK gardeners to include in their landscape plans. Aquifolium is a low growing, spreading variety of Mahonia and has the usual clusters of yellow flowers followed by blue-black berries. Native to the Pacific Northwest, Mahonia Aquifolium was first brought to the UK in 1823, and has been a favourite of gardeners here ever since. Its evergreen leaves, similar to those of the holly plant, are red-tinted when they emerge in the spring, changing to a glossy deep green in summer, then purple in the autumn, and finally burgundy tinged with bronze in winter. In the winter to early spring, the plants are covered with clusters of fragrant yellow flowers. The blue-black berries which follow later in the year can be made into jams, jellies or wine. To ensure a good set of fruit, plant more than one Mahonia Aquifolium bush for cross-pollination. Hardy in most regions of the UK, Mahonia Aquifolium will grow to a mature height of 1-1.5 meters and spread of 1.25 metres over a period of 10 to 20 years. Once the plant has reached close to its full size, begin an annual pruning of your Mahonia Aquifolium to maintain vigorous growth, cutting back a quarter of the older stems to within 15 cm of the central trunk once it has finished flowering in early spring. These woodland natives will do best when planted in partial to full shade, in any well-drained soil, in an exposed or sheltered location. Mahonia Aquifolium is extremely drought-resistant, making it an ideal ground cover in challenging spots in the landscape, where there is little sun and the ground is dry. Since it is mostly resistant to pests and disease, it is almost maintenance-free.Mahonia Aquifolium is a perfect fit for a wildlife or woodland garden, where plants will spread by root suckers to fill in available space. On a north or east side of a house, where there is partial to full shade, Mahonia Aquifolium will make an excellent ground cover for a dry spot along the foundation, and in a shady corner of a mixed border the attractive, glossy leaves provide a backdrop for flowering plants throughout the growing season, before blooming themselves starting in November when most plants are done for the year. Mahonia Aquifolium has many qualities to recommend it to the UK gardener, from its winter flowering habit, to its attractive evergreen foliage, and its low-maintenance vigorous growth!

Hebe Green Globe or Shrubby Veronica Green Globe for Sale

Hebe Green Globe or Shrubby Veronica Green Globe for Sale

Hebe Green Globe or Shrubby Veronica Green Globe, also known as Hebe Emerald GreenHebe Green Globe is an ornamental shrub also known as Shrubby Veronica Green Globe. It’s an attractive yet tough evergreen plant that can withstand windy, coastal conditions. Hebe Green Globe is principally admired for its vivid moss green foliage. Its branches are smothered in tiny, dense upward-pointing leaves all year round and small white flowers usually appear in midsummer. Hebe shrubs are not generally grown for their flowers but the delicate blooms of Green Globe are very pretty and enhance the green foliage. Hebe Green Globe will grow to 25 - 30 centimetres tall and can spread up to 150 centimetres wide. If you clip it regularly Hebe Emerald Green Globe will resemble a tightly-packed ball of fresh green growth. How Hardy Is Hebe Green Globe?Green Globe is hardy throughout the UK withstanding frosts and snow. Once established it will tolerate dry, exposed areas and cope with windy conditions too. Hebe Green Globe will grow in most soils conditions thriving in sandy, chalky, clay soils of any ph provided it is not water-logged.How To Use Hebe Green GlobeShrubby Veronica Green Globe is often over-looked which is a shame because it is incredibly useful to those needing garden structure. It naturally grows in a small compact form, but can be clipped into neat balls or planted as a low height hedge as an alternative to box or yew. Flower gardeners should not dismiss Green Globe because its vivid colour and understated flowers are the perfect foil for bright showy blooms. This gives balance to a chaotic flower border filled with clashing colours. They also make excellent mess-free ground cover that suppresses weeds and deters cats.Because of its compact size Shrubby Veronica Green Globe is a great addition to a rock garden. Their structural shapes lift the height, providing much needed variety to ground-height rockery areas. A popular way to grow Hebe Green Globe is in a container. Hebes thrive in well-watered containers creating architectural ‘pillars’ on either side of a door, garden path or even a birdbath. How To Care For Hebe Green GlobeMulch hebe each year to conserve nutrients, but there is no need to regularly feed them as it can cause the branches to go floppy. There is no need to prune such a small plant either, but if yours becomes unruly and untidy, cut back its branches after flowering - if you prune them in spring your Hebe Green Globe may not flower. Shrubby Veronica Green Globe provides essential structural framework in a small garden or flower border and sits extremely well in a rockery. If you’re looking for year round colour and enjoy low maintenance planting then Hebe Green Globe is an attractive yet sensible choice.
