Chaemerops Humilis London & Online UK. Hardy Fan Palms UK

Chaemerops Humilis London & Online UK. Hardy Fan Palms UK

Chamaerops Humilis is a hardy fan palm producing multiple stems creating a bushy appearance. Stiff dark green fan shaped leaves. It is frost and cold tolerant and is an essential plant for palm-lovers. The yellow flowers produced in early summer are followed by green fruits which turn purple. This fan palm is a hardy palm suitable for climate zones of the Southern UK. Not an overly large tropical, it fits very well into areas where space is at a premium.  Also known as Dwarf Fan Palm, it comes from the Family Arecacae and the Genus Chamaerops, known for its erect prolific stems bearing large leaves cut into linear sections.  Chamaerops bears insignificant flowers in panicles from the lower leaf axils of the plant, with small, date like fruits developing from there. The Chamaerops Humilis variety is a more bushy evergreen palm which develops into a medium-sized plant in a shrub like shape. This variety is often either multi-stemmed or stemless. The fan shaped leaves exist in a mass of foliage, rounded in appearance. The leaves can be 40-45 centimetres in length.  This fan palm’s yellow flowers are small, emerging from short, rigid panicles and arise from mature plants only.  The green fruits transition to purple. It will take Chamaerops Humilis between 20-50 years to reach its ultimate growth of between 1.5-2.5 in height and 1.0-1.5 ultimate spread.Hardy to zone H4 in the UK, they prefer to be grown in a sheltered position which can provide fairly bright but indirect lighting. Suggested aspects are from the North or East facing positions. In areas other than H4, they can be grown under glass or as a houseplant.  In the indoor environment, during the growing season, they respond to moderate watering and balanced fertiliser applications. Over the winter, reduce rate of watering. These are a low maintenance palm, with no pruning required. They prefer a slightly acidic pH, a well drained soil environment with some density. Loam is considered its favorite texture, or a well drained soil mix with some added organic matter.Suggested uses include Architectural Patio themes, as a Container Plant, or in a Coastal Garden Courtyard type location.More on tropical plants on our blog.

Phormium Tenax Purpurea Purple Phomium. Grass Specialists UK

Phormium Tenax Purpurea Purple Phomium. Grass Specialists UK

Phormium Tenax Purpurea or Purple Phormium is a beautifully coloured Phormium grass bearing narrow, bronze-purple leaves and deep red flowers in summer. Phormium Grasses originate from New Zealand and are clump-forming upright shrubs. They prefer to be planted in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. The flower spikes are produced during July to August and are a deep burgundy red colour.Phormium Tenax Purpurea are fabulous architectural shrubs that are very easy to grow and will tolerate coastal conditions. They have, not surprisingly become very popular in coastal areas where the choice for planting can be quite limited. These beauties will perform really well and have been awarded the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society, a sure sign that it will grow well in most gardens.Phormium Tenax Purpurea is a robust evergreen perennial of the Hemerocallidaceae Family. Also known as Phorium tenax Purpureum in the UK, it is best known for its large clumps of very leathery leaves, taking the form of a strap like shape and measuring up to 2 metres in length.  Their panicles emerge to some 3 metres and express tube shaped, smallish flowers of deep red during the summer.Hardy to Zone H5 in the UK and Ireland, Phormium Tenax Purpurea prefers full sun to partial shade exposures, with corresponding aspects in priority, from North to East to South to West facing. They will persist in sheltered or exposed positions, but protection in cold climate areas is a good idea. In terms of soils preference, aim for a loamy sand that is well-drained, but also can hold its moisture. Not terribly choosy regarding pH, grow your Purple Phormium in slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline pH levels and she’ll be quite happy. Also known as New Zealand flax Purpureum Group from its origins, this evergreen will achieve ultimate height between 2.5 and 4.0 metres, with a spread of 1.5-2.5 metres in the course of its 10-20 years to reach full maturity.Relatively maintenance free, you can conveniently remove any dead or damaged leaves in the spring to help your Phormium Tenax Purpurea thrive, but little more is needed as they are typically disease free.  This is an outstanding choice as a low maintenance border along your flower beds, or as an architectural offering in your city and courtyard gardens. They are especially suited to coastal gravel gardens. We have a good selection of Phormiums or New Zealand Flax at our London plant centre, all of which are available to buy online with delivery UK wide and to Ireland. Syringa Vulgaris Alba Common White Lilac for Sale Online UK

Syringa Vulgaris Alba or the Common White Lilac, is a true old-fashioned garden favourite. An extremely hardy deciduous member of the olive family, lilacs first found their way to the UK in the 16th century. Syringa Vulgaris Alba has a vase-shaped upright form, with dark green lance-shaped leaves. In April and May the shrubs are smothered in dense panicles of delicate, pure white blooms with a heavy, sweet scent, which make excellent cut flowers. In autumn the leaves turn shades of burgundy and bronze.Height and Spread of Syringa Vulgaris AlbaThe Common White Lilac shrub will slowly grow to a mature height and spread of 2-3 metres. How Hardy Is Syringa Vulgaris AlbaCommon White Lilac is hardy throughout the UK and across northern Europe. How to Use Syringa Vulgaris AlbaCommon White Lilac is an excellent shrub for gardens both large and small. Planted in containers, this hardy shrub will create a living wall on a roof terrace or balcony, where they can be pruned to maintain a suitable size. One specimen plant near a window or door, or next to a patio, will perfume the air with its fragrant blooms and provide a pleasant green note for the rest of the season. A hedge of Syringa Vulgaris Alba in bloom would be a breath-taking sight when in bloom, or one or two plants could be planted in a mixed informal hedge for a long season of interest. You can also plant a climbing plant such as a clematis to grow up through the branches and deliver a longer season of flowers. How to Care for Syringa Vulgaris AlbaPlant Syringa Vulgaris Alba in full sun or dappled shade in a sheltered position in humus-rich moist but well-drained soil with an alkaline to neutral pH. Lilacs will thrive in a chalky soil. Tolerant of salt, this shrub will do well in seaside gardens, while it is equally well-suited to even inner-city locations as it is very tolerant of pollution. This deer-resistant shrub also is perfect for country properties. Prune Common White Lilac immediately after flowering, as next year’s blossoms will form over the summer. If your shrub becomes overgrown, rejuvenate it by cutting back one-third of the stems every year. Syringa Vulgaris Alba is a lovely old-fashioned favourite whose fragrant white blooms deserve a place in the modern UK garden!

Arbutus Unedo Strawberry Tree for Sale UK Online

Arbutus Unedo Strawberry Tree for Sale UK Online

Arbutus Unedo Strawberry Tree - this lovely Evergreen Strawberry Tree (Latin name Arbutus Unedo) has much to commend it all year round. Most of the Strawberry Trees grown in the UK are more likely to be medium sized shrubs rather than specimen trees. However here at Paramount Plants, we now have both types of Arbutus Unedo in stock.  These very attractive trees and shrubs produce copious white bell shaped fowers in Autumn followed by edible strawberry shaped fruits. Arbutus Unedo as a ShrubThese Arbutus Strawberry shrubs have a nice bushy shape and are approximately 1 metre tall (excluding the pot). When grown as a shrub, Arbutus is low maintenance, naturally developing an attractive shape when left to its own devices so pruning is not necessary.  Arbutus Unedo as a Full Standard TreeLess easy to find in the UK is the Arbutus Unedo Strawberry Tree grown as a full standard, clear stemmed tree. These mature, beautifully shaped, ornamental trees are between 3.5 and 4 metres tall with a long, slim trunk circa 12 cm in diameter. An Arbutus full standard Tree is impressive as a standalone focal point or given the shape, can also be used for above-fence screening. Arbutus Unedo is famously known in Ireland as the Killarney strawberry tree, where it grows prolifically. Given Killarney’s proximity to the Atlantic Coast, it is safe to assume that Arbutus Unedo is very well suited to coastal areas as long as it is planted in a warm, sheltered spot.Arbutus Unedo is a beautiful evergreen with impressive strawberry-like fruits that are very attractive to look at and lovely serrated evergreen leaves. In contrast to the green foliage, the bark is an attractive cinnamon-reddish brown colour. Small flowers emerge in creamy clusters in autumn which then go on to form the pretty, strawberry-shaped fruits. These fruit turn red when ripe and are adored by birds. The flowers last well into early winter and are sweetly scented. They provide pollen for bees and other pollinating insects at a time of the year when nectar can be scarce. Customers often ask us whether the Arbutus fruit is edible. The answer is yes! Arbutus fruits, which take a year to ripen, are edible as a raw fruit and are rich in vitamin C. Some may find them a little bland and conclude that they look more striking than they taste. In recipes, arbutus fruit is most commonly used in jams, syrups, chutneys and as a filler fruit for pies. The fruit is relatively large, about the size of an average strawberry in fact. The Arbutus Uneda Strawberry Tree is UK hardy. They are slow growing so they work well in smaller gardens. You can plant them in full sun or partial shade, ideally with shelter from strong winds. Younger plants may need protection in extra harsher winters until they are more mature and hardier. Growing Tip: Choose a sunny and sheltered spot to allow them to settle in. Pruning may mean the loss of fruit as they form fruits on the previous year's flowers.

Pittosporum Tenuifolium. New Zealand Pittosporum. Buy UK

Pittosporum Tenuifolium, also known as New Zealand Pittosporum, are hard-working evergreen shrubs that provide attractive architectural shapes in the garden. New Zealand Pittosporum are generally grown for their evergreen small-leaf foliage and compact shape or growth habit.  Bearing leathery often glossy foliage, a New Zealand Pittosporum shrub provides firm structural background to a flower garden or creates a simple pleasing screen.Columnar in shape, Pittosporum Tenuifolium boasts shining green leaves with wavy margins and small, dark purple clusters of honey-scented flowers in late spring. These understated yet attractive flowers attract many pollinators. Following its flowers rounded fruits appear which are appreciated by birds. New Zealand Pittosporum will grow to a maximum of four to eight metres in height and spread over two to four metres. It will take approximately ten to twenty years to reach maximum heights.Pittosporum Tenuifolium Hardiness LevelsPittosporum Tenuifolium is hardy in most areas of the UK but will struggle in colder areas that regularly freeze. It’s easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil. How To Use Pittosporum TenuifoliumNew Zealand Pittosporum are evergreen and their main function is to provide year-round foliage interest and structure to a single-height garden, but this is not the only way to use them because New Zealand Pittosporum are attractive plants in their own right. They make excellent stand alone shrubs as they are easily grown in containers and pruned into shapes. When grown closely together Pittosporum Tenuifolium make an unusual hedge and can be considered in place of yew. Pittosporum Tenuifolium look their best in full sun but are scented at night. Try planting them near a seating area for round the clock interest. How to Care For Pittosporum TenuifoliumPittosporum Tenuifolium will grow in any soil that is well-drained but they will need protection from consistent sub-zero temperatures and freezing winds. Pittosporum Tenuifolium are hardy in most areas but won’t thrive in the very cold conditions of the UK’s far north. A temporary garden fleece will protect younger plants, but if it snows gently brush any accumulation from the leaves.Prune your Pittosporum Tenuifolium by cutting out old wood and straggly stems in winter to maintain a good shape.  If you mulch shrubs yearly in the early springtime it helps to produce healthy, glossy foliage.Pittosporum Tenuifolium is good choice for a low maintenance garden. It’s sturdy, reliable and provides food and shelter for wildlife.

Sasa Palmata Nebulosa Bamboo Broad Leaved Bamboo for Sale UK

Sasa Palmata Nebulosa Bamboo Broad Leaved Bamboo for Sale UK

Sasa Palmata Nebulosa or Broad Leaved Bamboo, combines an exotic jungle look with cold-hardiness, making it an ideal bamboo for growing in British gardens, with one caution: it spreads, requiring either lots of space, or a strong bamboo barrier or container to keep it within bounds! Native to Japan, Sasa Palmata Nebulosa will add an exotic air to your garden in a few short years. The broad, light-green leaves grow to 10 cm wide and 35 cm long, forming a dense canopy. The foliage remains green throughout the winter, increasing its usefulness as a landscape plant. The slender culms, up to 1 cm in diameter, develop a purple pattern over time, adding to the visual interest. Hardy throughout most of the UK, down to minus 18 C, Broad Leaved Bamboo will quickly grow to a mature height of 2 - 2.5 metres. It will spread indefinitely unless you take precautions to control the underground runners. Plant in an aboveground container, or place a bamboo barrier below ground at the time of planting to prevent future problems!  Sasa Palmata Nebulosa will grow equally well in sun or shade, in fertile, moist sand, clay, or loam soil. It will make a good ground cover where erosion is a concern, as the strong underground runners will stabilize a slope. It is well-suited to container growing with its relatively low height. Next to a water feature, Sasa Palmata Nebulosa will add an exotic air, and there will be little trouble with leaf drop, unlike with some other, finer-leaved bamboos. A specimen plant in a large container on a roof terrace or in a courtyard will create a lush, jungle atmosphere year-round. Sasa Palmata Nebulosa is one of the most exotic looking and dramatic of the hardy bamboos available in the UK.
