Chaemerops Humilis London & Online UK. Hardy Fan Palms UK

Chaemerops Humilis London & Online UK. Hardy Fan Palms UK

Chamaerops Humilis is a hardy fan palm producing multiple stems creating a bushy appearance. Stiff dark green fan shaped leaves. It is frost and cold tolerant and is an essential plant for palm-lovers. The yellow flowers produced in early summer are followed by green fruits which turn purple. This fan palm is a hardy palm suitable for climate zones of the Southern UK. Not an overly large tropical, it fits very well into areas where space is at a premium.  Also known as Dwarf Fan Palm, it comes from the Family Arecacae and the Genus Chamaerops, known for its erect prolific stems bearing large leaves cut into linear sections.  Chamaerops bears insignificant flowers in panicles from the lower leaf axils of the plant, with small, date like fruits developing from there. The Chamaerops Humilis variety is a more bushy evergreen palm which develops into a medium-sized plant in a shrub like shape. This variety is often either multi-stemmed or stemless. The fan shaped leaves exist in a mass of foliage, rounded in appearance. The leaves can be 40-45 centimetres in length.  This fan palm’s yellow flowers are small, emerging from short, rigid panicles and arise from mature plants only.  The green fruits transition to purple. It will take Chamaerops Humilis between 20-50 years to reach its ultimate growth of between 1.5-2.5 in height and 1.0-1.5 ultimate spread.Hardy to zone H4 in the UK, they prefer to be grown in a sheltered position which can provide fairly bright but indirect lighting. Suggested aspects are from the North or East facing positions. In areas other than H4, they can be grown under glass or as a houseplant.  In the indoor environment, during the growing season, they respond to moderate watering and balanced fertiliser applications. Over the winter, reduce rate of watering. These are a low maintenance palm, with no pruning required. They prefer a slightly acidic pH, a well drained soil environment with some density. Loam is considered its favorite texture, or a well drained soil mix with some added organic matter.Suggested uses include Architectural Patio themes, as a Container Plant, or in a Coastal Garden Courtyard type location.More on tropical plants on our blog.

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus. Miniature Chusan Palm Tree. Palms UK

Trachycarpus Wagnerianus - although known as the Miniature Chusan Palm Tree - and often fondly referred to as WaggiesOriginating from Japan and Korea, this hardy palm is well used to surviving the typhoon season, so it copes well with exposed, windy positions. The leaves are much more rigid and compact than the very popular Trachycarpus Fortunei, also a hardy palm suited to growing outdoors in the UK. Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is one of the most beautiful of the palms that we are able to grow here in the UK and Ireland. Also known as Waggy, and Dwarf Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus has its origins in Germany, where it was named by Ludwig Winter to honour his fellow horticulturalist, Albert Wagner. As it turns out, Wagner had imported a quantity of this more compact Trachycarpus from Japan; and eventually sold his entire inventory to Mr Winter. If you are seeking an exquisite specimen to bring an exotic style to your garden, Trachycarpus wagnerianus is certainly a specimen you should be adding. The hardiest of palms grown in our region, Dwarf Chusan Palm will tolerate snow, frost, and temperatures down to -15OC. Even in the strongest winds, this cold tolerant palm will maintain its shape and appearance. Unlike many exotics, this offering is truly a low maintenance delight.Waggies will grow to 5-6 metres in ultimate height, and about 2 metres in spread (over 50 years) ; and have a slow growth habit. They prefer full sun but can do well in partial shade exposures as well.  Provide a moist, rich, and well-drained soil media of near neutral, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline pH.One of the most prominent features of Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is their small, stiff leaves, making them much tougher than the ‘standard’ and larger Trachycarpus Fortunei. Another feature of the smallish leaves is that aside from their jaunty, attractive appearance, they do make it easier to accommodate when space is at a premium. The popularity of this variety of Trachycarpus continues to grow across the UK and Ireland with its unique silhouette adding an outstanding architectural feature to your exotics. More compact than the Trachycarpus Fortunei and its markedly more hardy tolerance to our climate, this is an outstanding hardy palm to add to your garden space for this year.Paramount Plants specialises in these tropical plants that are hardy enough for the UK climate.

Quercus Robur, Quercus Pedunculata, English Oak trees buy UK

Quercus Robur, Quercus Pedunculata, English Oak trees buy UK

Quercus Robur, also known as Quercus Pedunculata or English Oak, is a magnificent tree native to the UK. This long-lived and much-loved tree is one of the most common species to be found in the UK, and with good reason - bring its stately beauty home to your own property! The English Oak has long held a special place in the forests of the UK, where it is a native species. As Quercus Robur matures, it forms a wide, spreading crown which casts a dappled shade onto the ground below. The 10 cm long dark green leaves emerge in May, at the same time as the 2- 4 cm long yellow catkins which hang from the branches. Once an English Oak tree has reached about 40 years, these flowers are followed in autumn by the 2- 2.5 cm long acorns that are a favourite food of many wild animals. The leaves turn a reddish-brown in autumn. Hardy in all parts of the UK, Quercus Robur will grow to a height of 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 20 to 50 years. However, it will continue to grow fairly rapidly for up to 120 years, reaching a final mature height between 20 and 40 metres. This is a tree to plant for the future, not just for your lifetime. Because of the eventual size of these trees, it is best to plant them up to 12 metres apart. No pruning is required to maintain the desired shape of these magnificent trees. Our specimens will get you off to a good start, as they are already more than 2 metres tall!  Plant your Quercus Robur in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil, in a sheltered or exposed position. Tolerant of air pollution and moderately tolerant of salt spray, English Oak is a good choice for planting in many different environments within the UK.Carefully select your spot for an English Oak tree, as you should consider its eventual large size. This is not a tree for a small city garden, but on a larger urban property a Quercus Robur would make an excellent specimen tree, and on an open country acreage or in a woodland garden, one or more of these magnificent trees would be a perfect choice!Quercus Robur is a much-loved tree in the UK landscape, and understandably so: it is a long-living, sturdy tree of great beauty. Planting an English Oak is an investment not just for you, but for future generations! High Quality Bare Root PlantsOur bare root Quercus Robur are established & mature, with well developed root systems. We are confident that these are the best quality bare root plants available. They will quickly establish & thrive, once planted.Prices are based on a minimum or multiple order of 25 plants.

Elaeagnus Angustifolia Oleaster for Sale Online UK & Ireland

Elaeagnus Angustifolia Oleaster for Sale Online UK & Ireland

Elaeagnus Angustifolia, also known as Oleaster or Russian olive, is an incredibly tough tree which will survive almost any type of growing conditions, and will be especially successful in the most challenging climates in the UK!  Whether grown as a specimen plant in a sheltered city garden or as windbreak by the sea, Elaeagnus Angustifolia will come through with flying colours!Native to Russia and Iran, Elaeagnus Angustifolia has been grown in the UK since the 1500s. The thorny stems bear silver, fragrant leaves, and produce small white flowers with a honey scent in June, which are a valuable pollen source for bees. Silver-orange berries later appear in the autumn which, while edible, are mostly of value for attracting birds. A unique quality of the Oleaster is that its roots set nitrogen, feeding not just itself, but also other plants around them, making them a valuable companion planting.  Elaeagnus Angustifolia is hardy throughout the UK and northern Europe, growing quickly to a mature height of 3 metres and spread of 2 metres within 10 years. Oleaster will tolerate considerable pruning, and can even be cut right back to the ground. If planting Elaeagnus Angustifolia as a hedge, space plants 35-75 cm apart. You can use a high potassium fertilizer in August to help new growth mature before winter. Elaeagnus Angustifolia will tolerate almost any conditions, and in fact thrives in some of the toughest. It is an excellent choice for coastal plantings, as it can take cold, exposed positions and is tolerant to salt, as well as doing quite well in dry, sandy soil, although it will also grow in heavy clay soil, as well as loam. It grows best in full sun.  Oleaster can be used as a specimen plant in a small garden, where its silvery leaves can be used to great effect when combined with climbing plants such as roses or clematis, and where the scent of the foliage and flowers can be appreciated close up. It will thrive in a hot, dry spot such as a patch of gravel where little else will grow. On a larger property, Elaeagnus Angustifolia makes an effective security hedge, as its thorns will deter intruders, either animal or human, and can be employed as a windbreak to provide shelter for other, more delicate plants.  Elaeagnus Angustifolia is a great choice for gardens across the UK because of its resilience in difficult conditions, as well as its beautiful foliage and flowers. It has a place in gardens large and small!

Philadelphus Coronarius Mock Orange for sale Online UK

Philadelphus Coronarius Mock Orange for sale Online UK

Philadelphus Coronarius, also known as the common mock orange, is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub with fragrant flowers which will make a great addition to any city or country garden. It has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit to recognize its usefulness to UK gardeners. Native to southern Europe, Philadelphus Coronarius is a common sight in UK gardens. In spring its ovate leaves are bright yellow, changing to a yellow-green as the season goes on. Its creamy white fragrant flowers, 2.5 cm across with yellow centres, appear in early summer. Fully hardy throughout the UK, the common mock orange will grow to its full height of 1.5-2.5 metres and spread of 1-1.5 metres in 5-10 years, and last for decades. For a hedge, plant the shrubs 60 cm apart. Philadelphus Coronarius will benefit from an annual pruning immediately following the flowering period. Cut out all spent flowers to the first strong shoot, and cut out up to 20% of the older stems to the ground to encourage vigorous new growth. Philadelphus Coronarius will grow best in full sun or partial shade in any well-drained soil. It will also be happy in a damp, shaded spot. Once established it will tolerate dry soil conditions. It will do well in a sheltered or exposed position. Tolerant to both urban pollution and salt, it is a good choice for both city and coastal plantings. Common mock orange is often used as a hedging plant because of its dense structure and quick growth rate, giving a reliable, bushy screen in a few years from planting. It is best as an informal hedge, as it looks best when it retains a natural growth pattern. Philadelphus Coronarius is best planted where the fragrance of the flowers can be enjoyed in season, perhaps along the side of a patio, where it will also create an effective privacy screen in spring, summer, and autumn. In a smaller space a specimen shrub will still perfume the air and provide a season-long splash of colour with its bright green leaves. Planted near a window, its scent can be enjoyed inside as well. Common mock orange is also a classic cut flower, especially combined with June roses, bringing its perfume into the house and lasting up to a week. Philadelphus Coronarius has long been grown and appreciated by UK gardeners. Its reliable hardiness, bright foliage, and fragrant flowers make it a perfect choice for gardens everywhere!
