Moral Case For Fossil Fuels - Alex Epstein - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Moral Case For Fossil Fuels - Alex Epstein - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Could everything we know about fossil fuels be wrong? For decades, environmentalists have told us that using fossil fuels is a self-destructive addiction that will destroy our planet. Yet at the same time, by every measure of human well-being, from life expectancy to clean water to climate safety, life has been getting better and better. How can this be? The explanation, energy expert Alex Epstein argues in The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels, is that we usually hear only one side of the story. We re taught to think only of the negatives of fossil fuels, their risks and side effects, but not their positives their unique ability to provide cheap, reliable energy for a world of seven billion people. And the moral significance of cheap, reliable energy, Epstein argues, is woefully underrated. Energy is our ability to improve every single aspect of life, whether economic or environmental. If we look at the big picture of fossil fuels compared with the alternatives, the overall impact of using fossil fuels is to make the world a far better place. We are morally obligated to use more fossil fuels for the sake of our economy and our environment. Drawing on original insights and cutting-edge research, Epstein argues that most of what we hear about fossil fuels is a myth. For instance . . . Myth: Fossil fuels are dirty. Truth: The environmental benefits of using fossil fuels far outweigh the risks. Fossil fuels don t take a naturally clean environment and make it dirty; they take a naturally dirty environment and make it clean. They don t take a naturally safe climate and make it dangerous; they take a naturally dangerous climate and make it ever safer. Myth: Fossil fuels are unsustainable, so we should strive to use renewable solar and wind. Truth: The sun and wind are intermittent, unreliable fuels that always need backup from a reliable source of energy usually fossil fuels. There are huge amounts of fossil fuels left, and we have plenty of time to find something cheaper. Myth: Fossil fuels are hurting the developing world. Truth: Fossil fuels are the key to improving the quality of life for billions of people in the developing world. If we withhold them, access to clean water plummets, critical medical machines like incubators become impossible to operate, and life expectancy drops significantly. Calls to get off fossil fuels are calls to degrade the lives of innocent people who merely want the same opportunities we enjoy in the West. Taking everything into account, including the facts about climate change, Epstein argues that fossil fuels are easy to misunderstand and demonize, but they are absolutely good to use. And they absolutely need to be championed. . . . Mankind s use of fossil fuels is supremely virtuous because human life is the standard of value and because using fossil fuels transforms our environment to make it wonderful for human life.

Soldiers and Kings - Jason De Leon - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Soldiers and Kings - Jason De Leon - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Political instability, poverty, climate change, and the insatiable appetite for cheap labour all fuel clandestine movement across borders. As those borders harden, the demand for smugglers who aid migrants across them increases every year. Yet the real lives and work of smugglers - or coyotes, or guides, as they are often known by the migrants who hire their services - are only ever reported on from a distance, using tired tropes and stereotypes, often depicted as boogie men and violent warlords. In an effort to better understand this essential yet extralegal billion dollar global industry, internationally recognised anthropologist and expert Jason De Leon embedded with a group of smugglers moving migrants across Mexico over the course of seven years. The result of this unique and extraordinary access is SOLDIERS AND KINGS: the first ever in-depth, character-driven look at human smuggling. It is a heart-wrenching and intimate narrative that revolves around the life and death of one coyote who falls in love and tries to leave smuggling behind. In a powerful, original voice, De Leon expertly chronicles the lives of low-level foot soldiers breaking into the smuggling game, and morally conflicted gang leaders who oversee rag-tag crews of guides and informants along the migrant trail. SOLDIERS AND KINGS is not only a ground-breaking up-close glimpse of a difficult-to-access world, it is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction.

Natural Beauty - Ling Ling Huang - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Natural Beauty - Ling Ling Huang - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Our narrator is the youngest student at the Conservatory. She produces a sound from the piano no one else does, employing a special technique she learned from her parents - also stunningly talented musicians - who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future as a pianist and accepts a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City. Holistik is known for its remarkable products and outrageous procedures: remoras that suck cheap Botox from the body, eyelash extensions made of spider silk, emotional support ducklings bred to imprint on their owners. Every product is ethically sourced and made with nothing but the highest quality ingredients. Our narrator''s new job is a coveted one among New York''s beauty-obsessed, and it affords her entry into a new world of privilege. She becomes transfixed by Helen - a model, and the niece of Holistik''s charismatic owner - and the two strike up a close friendship that hazily veers into more. All the while, Holistik plies our narrator with products that slim her thighs, smooth her skin, lighten her hair, and change her eye color. But beneath these fancy creams and tinctures lies a terrible truth that threatens to consume her. After all, beauty is nothing without ugliness. NATURAL BEAUTY is a piercing, terrifying, and darkly funny debut that eviscerates the beauty and wellness industry, exploring questions of consumerism, self-worth, race, and identity. This propulsive novel takes a world that feels familiar and pushes it to a conclusion that at first might seem jarring, but when we inch closer, settles on us as truth.

Paper Soldiers - Saleha Mohsin - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Paper Soldiers - Saleha Mohsin - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

In 1995, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin re-defined the next thirty years of currency policy with the mantra, ''A strong dollar is in America''s interest.'' That mantra held, ushering in exceptional prosperity and cheap foreign goods, but the strong dollar policy also played a role in the devastating hollowing out of America''s manufacturing sector. Meanwhile, abroad, the United States increasingly turned to the dollar as a weapon of war. In Paper Soldiers, Saleha Mohsin reveals how the Treasury Department has shaped U.S. policy at home and overseas by wielding the American dollar as a weapon - and what that means in a new age of crisis. For decades, America has preferred its currency superpower - strong, the basis of a ''strong dollar'' policy that attracted foreign investors and pleased consumers. Drawing on Mohsin''s unparalleled access to current and former Treasury officials like Robert Rubin, Steven Mnuchin, and Janet Yellen, Paper Soldiers traces that policy''s intended and unintended consequences, including the rise of populist sentiment and trade war with China - culminating in an unprecedented attack on the dollar''s pristine status during the Trump presidency - and connects the dollar''s weaponization from 9/11 to the deployment of crippling financial sanctions against Russia. Ultimately, Mohsin argues that, untethered from many of the economic assumptions of the last generation, the power and influence of the American dollar is now at stake. With first-hand reporting and fresh analysis that illustrates the vast, often unappreciated power that the Treasury Department wields at home and abroad, Paper Soldiers tells the inside story of how we really got here - and the future not only of the almighty dollar, but the nation''s teetering role as a democratic superpower.

Am I Being Too Subtle? - Sam Zell - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Am I Being Too Subtle? - Sam Zell - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

The traits that make Sam Zell one of the world''s most successful entrepreneurs also make him one of the most surprising, enigmatic, and entertaining mavericks in American business. Self-made billionaire Sam Zell consistently sees what others don''t. From finding a market for overpriced Playboy magazines among his junior high classmates, to buying real estate on the cheap after a market crash, to investing in often unglamorous industries with long-term value, Zell acts boldly on supply and demand trends to grab the first-mover advantage. And he can find opportunity virtually anywhere-from an arcane piece of legislation to a desert meeting in Abu Dhabi. If everyone is going left, look right, Zell often says. To him, conventional wisdom is nothing but a reference point. Year after year, deal after deal, he shuts out the noise of the crowd, gathers as much information as possible, then trusts his own instincts. He credits much of his independent thinking to his parents, who were Jewish refugees from World War II. Talk to any two people and you might get wild swings in their descriptions of Zell. A media firestorm ensued when the Tribune Company went into bankruptcy a year after he agreed to steward the enterprise. At the same time, his razor-sharp instincts are legendary on Wall Street, and he has sponsored over a dozen IPOs. He''s known as the Grave Dancer for his strategy of targeting troubled assets, yet he''s created thousands of jobs. Within his own organization, he has an inordinate number of employees at every level who are fiercely loyal and have worked for him for decades. Zell''s got a big personality; he is often contrarian, blunt, and irreverent, and always curious and hardworking. This is the guy who started wearing jeans to work in the 1960s, when offices were a sea of gray suits. He''s the guy who told The Wall Street Journal in 1985, If it ain''t fun, we don''t do it. He rides motorcycles with his friends, the Zell''s Angels, around the world and he keeps ducks on the deck outside his office. As he writes: I simply don''t buy into many of the made-up rules of social convention. The bottom line is: If you''re really good at what you do, you have the freedom to be who you really are. Am I Being Too Subtle?-a reference to Zell''s favorite way to underscore a point-takes readers on a ride across his business terrain, sharing with honesty and humor stories of the times he got it right, when he didn''t, and most important, what he learned in the process. This is an indispensable guide for the next generation of disrupters, entrepreneurs, and investors.
