The author of the book analyses selected 19th-century operas based on Shakespeare’s plays from the perspective of their relations to the literature, aesthetics and philosophy of the Romantic period. The texts discussed here include Verdi’s Macbeth , Otello and Falstaff , Rossini’s Otello , Halévy’s The Tempest , Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet and Thomas’s Hamlet . The study aims to indicate diverse traces of the Romantic interpretation of Shakespeare’s works in the history of the 19th-century opera. Individual chapters present the librettos of the selected operas, analysed in the context of Shakespeare’s plays and their 19th-century reception, reconstructed on the basis of 19th-century historic-literary texts (of, among others, A. W. Schlegel, L. Tieck and V. Hugo), critical studies and press articles. The analyses conducted in the book succeed in presenting the evolution of the phenomenon of Romantic Shakespeareanism in the 19th-century opera theatre.

The book is an attempt at a monographic approach to the problem of the reception of 17th-century Dutch painting in modern literature. However, the author deals not only with contemporary works but also with the texts of 19th-century writers and critics, most often French, who shaped the so-called myth of the Dutch Golden Age. Readers learn the historically conditioned models of perception of 17th-century Dutch painting. The original achievement is the genre key, which is a consequence of the thesis on the mediation of the 20th-century reception of Dutch Golden Age painting in 19th-century European literature and art criticism. Contemporary writers are revising the concept of realism; they cannot talk about Vermeer’s View of Delft without referring to Proust’s petit pan de mur jaune. They read still lifes through Chardin and Cézanne or revive the myth of Rembrandt – a self-portraitist who analyzed himself. Also noteworthy is the section devoted to the little Dutch masters – Willem Dyster, Pieter de Hooch, Hendrick Avercamp, Hercules Seghers and Pieter Saenredam.

While there are plenty of studies on the impact English has exerted on the German language, the reverse contact situation has been relatively neglected. This monograph sets out to shed light on the German influence on the English lexicon in the twentieth century. It provides the first systematic appraisal of the semantic integration and contextual usage of the words adopted from German in the past few decades. The results presented in this study are based on the evaluation of a comprehensive lexicographical corpus of 1958 twentieth century German borrowings retrieved from the Oxford English Dictionary Online . The present-day usage of the borrowings is illustrated with linguistic documentary evidence collected from a wide range of English language corpora.

In showing the increasing female readership ways to negotiate between the behavioural codes of a patriarchal society and their own need for personal freedom, these novels can be read as early feminist critiques of society.

Giuseppe Lombardo Radice (1879-1938) was one of the main figures in Italian pedagogy in the first half of the 20th century and collaborated with the philosopher Giovanni Gentile on the 1923 reform of the Italian school system. However, his work ‘for’ and ‘with’ many elementary school teachers also left important and long-lasting traces beyond Italy’s borders, in Switzerland, Spain, Central Europe, and the North Adriatic, thanks to his intense international contacts with several scholars, foremost among them Adolphe Ferrière and Lorenzo Luzuriaga. A rediscovery of Lombardo Radice will open up new research avenues in different fields of the History of Education, History of Elementary Schools, and History of Teacher Education, because his original thinking about the primacy of the educational relationship between teacher and pupils, a new concept of school discipline and his idea of the scuola serena also accorded him a unique role in the international movement of New School Education. Moreover, his research among previously unknown popular elementary schools in Italy and the Italian-speaking Tessin region in Switzerland adopted a heuristic perspective, comparable to current studies on the material culture of schools.

In view of the unprecedented level of socioeconomic and political underdevelopment plaguing the African continent, there remains one key area in the polity with great potentials which remains largely untapped: civil society. What can it contribute to the alleviation of the burden of underdevelopment in Africa? What is the place of the Church in civil society, particularly in Nigeria? Can there be a sustainable cooperation between the Church and other civic groups in the country for the purpose of development? Using mainly literature-based methods, this work seeks to dig into the understanding of civil society from the ancient Aristotelian «polis» to its 21 st century African idea. It discusses the place of the Church in relation to the social question. Some of the vital areas of the Church’s civil societal involvement ad intra and with other civil groups are examined, using the Caritas’ structural principle of approach. Some major challenges hindering the vital input of the two institutions towards sustainable socioeconomic and political development are x-rayed. Conversely, some enormous challenges facing civil societal cooperation for development are discussed. This monograph reflects this fact from an interdisciplinary point of view (among the authors are special pedagogues, social pedagogues, doctors, psychologists, philosophers, pedagogues, legislation specialists) and from an international perspective (the team of authors consists of experts from the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Germany). The monograph is founded upon several research projects, whose organic part was formed by partial research focused mainly on the success and failure of inclusive education in the Central European region; on individual dimensions of inclusive education and the quality of life of persons with disabilities. The outcomes of the research, which were parts of individual projects, have been published in several publications by various publishing houses in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland. The most significant is considered the publication published under the editorship of V. Lechta Fundamentals of Inclusive Education in 2010 (435 p.), which was published by the publishing house Portál in Praha and it is the result of the activity of the authors from four Central European countries. The submitted publication is the result of more than 6 years of research into the issue of inclusive education. Its focus is the synthesis of existing knowledge resulting into perspectives of dealing with inclusive education in the 21st century. The content of the first part is formed by a reflection of inclusive education through the lens of several scientific fields: educational sciences, psychology, ethics, law and applied educational disciplines (school politics, school management, non-formal education, leisure time education). The content of the second part is formed by a reflection of inclusion in the context of education of children with the most frequent types of disabilities, disorders or endangerment. We hope that the publication will evoke discussion among concerned specialists as well as the wider public.
