De-Testing and De-Grading Schools - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

De-Testing and De-Grading Schools - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book has won the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title award 2014 . A century of education and education reform along with the last three decades of high-stakes testing and accountability reveals a disturbing paradox: Education has a steadfast commitment to testing and grading despite decades of research, theory, and philosophy that reveal the corrosive consequences of both testing and grading within an education system designed to support human agency and democratic principles. This edited volume brings together a collection of essays that confronts the failure of testing and grading and then offers practical and detailed examinations of implementing at the macro and micro levels of education teaching and learning free of the weight of testing and grading. The book explores the historical failure of testing and grading; the theoretical and philosophical arguments against testing and grading; the negative influence of testing and grading on social justice, race, class, and gender; and the role of testing and grading in perpetuating a deficit perspective of children, learning, race, and class. The chapters fall under two broad sections: Part I: «Degrading Learning, Detesting Education: The Failure of High-Stake Accountability in Education» includes essays on the historical, theoretical, and philosophical arguments against testing and grading; Part II: «De-Grading and De-Testing in a Time of High-Stakes Education Reform» presents practical experiments in de-testing and de-grading classrooms for authentic learning experiences.

The False Past - R.b.e. Price - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Provocative and disconcerting, The False Past confronts what many generations hold near and dear about their memorials. What if everything we know about colonial history is wrong? What if history is driven by vanity and unexamined moral claims? What if fabrication and corruption are so integral to history that it must be written anew? These questions, posed by Nietzsche, are answered in this exciting new work. The False Past takes a disturbing escapade through Australia’s colonial past. Using a Nietzschean evaluation of how the eternal recurrence of suffering worked in practice, it announces a fresh vision for frontier history. And in the finest Nietzschean tradition, Price reveals the uncaring absurdity and inconsistency of settlers in the pioneer past as their supreme failing because it produces contemporary trauma. The False Past evaluates claims to colonial nobility, too. Who were the souls aiming beyond humanity who rose up Down Under? Was its Übermensch a dark and moody genius with a taste for conquest, a supreme talent in pastoral profiteering, an Indigenous exemplar, or a cunning bushranger out on a mission? Awkward and confronting, bold and experimental, this book often says the unsayable. The False Past lays siege to nostalgia, piety, vanity and nihilism to explain how unfounded exceptionalism has come to rule our lives. A revisionist assault on settled history, The False Past promises to spark debate among readers for many years to come.

Luther’s «Heliand» - Timothy Blaine Price - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Luther’s «Heliand» - Timothy Blaine Price - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

The 2006 discovery of the Old Saxon Heliand manuscript fragment (MS L) in Leipzig is conspicuous. Besides its proximity to Wittenberg, the Leipzig University Library – site of the discovery – was first dedicated by Martin Luther in 1545. Given this relationship between the Reformer and the discovery location, it seems possible that the Reformer once had access to an original version of the Old Saxon Heliand , perhaps as an aid in his efforts to render Biblical Hebraisms into vernacular German idioms at a time of budding German nationalism. Indeed, long before the Old Saxon epic received the name by which it is currently known, rumors arose about Luther’s possession of an ancient vernacular Germanic Bible with a Latin preface. Even so, the source and age of these rumors are enigmatic. Were these rumors merely a myth created by later Protestants to counter Rome’s denunciation of Luther as a heretic? Following the trail of the rumors’ sources, Luther’s Heliand untangles historical relationships between the builders of the Leipzig University Library and several of their students – all men who comprised Luther’s innermost circle of Reformation thinkers. In their student notes, letters to colleagues, and printed diatribes against the Church and the Empire, these men recorded vital hints regarding the timing and location of their own discovery of the ancient Germanic Bible. Dating of these published accounts indicates that already several years prior to its dedication by Luther, the fledgling Leipzig University Library housed a medieval codex with features identical to those of the extant Old Saxon Heliand manuscripts, in particular MS L.

Luke on Trial - Cato Gulaker - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Luke on Trial - Cato Gulaker - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a significant new interpretation of the role of divine testing in Luke-Acts. By using narrative criticism, fresh insights are offered on these texts, which are often considered "difficult" or "unintelligible" by modern readers. Author Cato Gulaker argues that the numerous allusions to divine testing make good sense within the theological rationale of Luke, including the idea of praying to God in order for him not to lead his petitioners into temptation. As this element of the New Testament writings in general, and Luke in particular, is frequently overlooked in academic publications, this book will be vital for scholars, clergy, and general readers interested in the theology and cosmology of the two-part Lukan narrative. "One of the main themes in Luke’s Gospel and Acts of the Apostles is that life is a series of trials, and that God Himself is the tester-in-chief. Gulaker brings this theme to the fore as never before, and shows us the true meaning of ‘lead us not into temptation.’" —Henry Ansgar Kelly, Distinguished Research Professor, English Department, University of California, Los Angeles "In this careful study of Luke-Acts, Cato Gulaker argues that the figure of Satan should be interpreted as an agent of divine testing within a monistic worldview. Rather than an independent cosmic enemy of God and the church, Satan operates with divine authority to test, validate or disqualify the discipleship of members of the Christian community. Gulaker’s highly stimulating work continues to cast new light on the shadowy figure of Satan in the New Testament." —Paul Middleton, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Chester

A Passage to Globalism - Bidhan Chandra Roy - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

As the history of British colonialism recedes and a new phase of global integration intensifies, the critical tools of postcolonialism become less useful in reading South Asian diasporic fiction in Britain. A Passage to Globalism: Globalization, Identities, and South Asian Diasporic Fiction in Britain responds to the need for a critical framework that is able to address the relationships between identities and contemporary globality. It examines the politics of representation that are involved in positioning and categorizing South Asian diasporic fiction within such a world and asks questions of who and what are represented and how and to whom in selected works of South Asian diasporic fiction. A secondary aim of A Passage to Globalism addresses how South Asian diasporic fiction might extend and qualify theoretical explanations of globalization. This book asks what role does South Asian diasporic fiction play in constructing narratives of globalization? And how does literary analysis help us understand how «stories» of globalization are told? Testing and extending the utility of concepts from both Marxist and liberal explanations of globalization in this way, it argues for an integrated theoretical approach to a set of texts that operate at the complex intersection between Britain’s colonial past and the complexity of contemporary globality as well as across local, national, and transnational literary contexts.

Encountering Texts - Joi Carr - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Encountering Texts - Joi Carr - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Encountering Texts represents the theory and praxis uncovered through an ongoing interdisciplinary arts-based critical pedagogy that engages students in critical self-reflection (disciplined, sustained thinking, requiring engagement) on difference. The Multicultural Theatre Project (MTP) is a dialogical encounter with literature through the dramatic arts. This book provides a blueprint for the multiple ways in which this enacted theory/method can be utilized as a high impact practice toward transformative learning. The significance of minority literature as fertile testing ground for raising and seeking to answer questions about difference is undisputed. To address this dynamic, this research utilizes Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutical method of understanding to engage students in the interpretive process using theatre as methodology. Gadamer’s concept, described as a fusion of horizons, provides a methodological approach by which students can bring their own «effective history» to the hermeneutical task. He argues that hidden prejudices keep the interpreter from hearing the text. Thus an awareness of these prejudices leads to an openness that allows the text to speak. The MTP facilitates this kind of subjectivity by engaging the interpreter holistically. This integrative work provides a promising pragmatic interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning that creates bridges to liberatory knowledge, both cognitively and affectively.

Major Theories of Media Effects - W. James Potter - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Major Theories of Media Effects - W. James Potter - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

In Major Theories of Media Effects , six major theories of media effects are thoroughly analyzed and then evaluated to construct a picture of the current state of knowledge in the scholarly field of media effects. These six theories are cultivation, agenda setting, framing, uses and gratifications, social learning, and third person effect. Each of these six theories is examined in detail using fourteen analytical dimensions organized into four categories: how the theory was originally conceptualized, its original components, patterns of empirical testing of its claims, and how the theory has developed over time. The theories are then compared and contrasted along five evaluation dimensions (scope, precision, heuristic value, empirical validity, and openness), plus one summary evaluative dimension that compares their overall utility to generating knowledge about media effects. The insights generated through these analyses and evaluations are used to address questions such as: "What is a theory?"; "Who qualifies as a theoretician?"; and, "Within the scholarly field of media effects, why are there so many theories yet so little theory usage as foundations for empirical studies?" Concise and accessible analyses of major media effects theories—alongside helpful reference lists that handily index important literature in the field—make Major Theories of Media Effects both a vital reference for scholars and a valuable textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in media studies.

Education for Total Liberation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Education for Total Liberation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Education for Total Liberation is a collection of essays from leaders in the field of critical animal pedagogy (CAP). CAP emerges from activist educators teaching critical animal studies and is rooted in critical theory as well as the animal advocacy movement. Critical animal studies (CAS) argues for an interdisciplinary approach to understanding our relationships with nonhuman animals. CAS challenges two specific fields of theory: (1) animal studies, rooted in vivisection and testing on animals in the hard sciences and (2) human-animal studies, which reinforces a socially constructed binary between humans and animals and adopts abstract theoretical approaches. In contrast, CAS takes a progressive and committed approach to scholarship and sees the exploitation of nonhuman animals as interrelated with oppression of humans based on class, gender, race, ability, sexuality, age, and citizenship. CAS promotes the liberation of all animals and challenges all systems of domination. Education for Total Liberation is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate level readers (and beyond) who wish to learn from examples of radical pedagogical projects shaped by CAS and critical pedagogy. Contributing to this collection are Anne C. Bell, Anita de Melo, Carolyn Drew, Amber E. George, Karin Gunnarsson Dinker, Sinem Ketenci, John Lupinacci, Anthony J. Nocella II, Sean Parson, Helena Pedersen, Ian Purdy, Constance L. Russell, J.L. Schatz, Meneka Repka, William E. Shanahan III, and Richard J, White.
