Luke on Trial - Cato Gulaker - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Luke on Trial - Cato Gulaker - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a significant new interpretation of the role of divine testing in Luke-Acts. By using narrative criticism, fresh insights are offered on these texts, which are often considered "difficult" or "unintelligible" by modern readers. Author Cato Gulaker argues that the numerous allusions to divine testing make good sense within the theological rationale of Luke, including the idea of praying to God in order for him not to lead his petitioners into temptation. As this element of the New Testament writings in general, and Luke in particular, is frequently overlooked in academic publications, this book will be vital for scholars, clergy, and general readers interested in the theology and cosmology of the two-part Lukan narrative. "One of the main themes in Luke’s Gospel and Acts of the Apostles is that life is a series of trials, and that God Himself is the tester-in-chief. Gulaker brings this theme to the fore as never before, and shows us the true meaning of ‘lead us not into temptation.’" —Henry Ansgar Kelly, Distinguished Research Professor, English Department, University of California, Los Angeles "In this careful study of Luke-Acts, Cato Gulaker argues that the figure of Satan should be interpreted as an agent of divine testing within a monistic worldview. Rather than an independent cosmic enemy of God and the church, Satan operates with divine authority to test, validate or disqualify the discipleship of members of the Christian community. Gulaker’s highly stimulating work continues to cast new light on the shadowy figure of Satan in the New Testament." —Paul Middleton, Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Chester

A Passage to Globalism - Bidhan Chandra Roy - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

A Passage to Globalism - Bidhan Chandra Roy - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

As the history of British colonialism recedes and a new phase of global integration intensifies, the critical tools of postcolonialism become less useful in reading South Asian diasporic fiction in Britain. A Passage to Globalism: Globalization, Identities, and South Asian Diasporic Fiction in Britain responds to the need for a critical framework that is able to address the relationships between identities and contemporary globality. It examines the politics of representation that are involved in positioning and categorizing South Asian diasporic fiction within such a world and asks questions of who and what are represented and how and to whom in selected works of South Asian diasporic fiction. A secondary aim of A Passage to Globalism addresses how South Asian diasporic fiction might extend and qualify theoretical explanations of globalization. This book asks what role does South Asian diasporic fiction play in constructing narratives of globalization? And how does literary analysis help us understand how «stories» of globalization are told? Testing and extending the utility of concepts from both Marxist and liberal explanations of globalization in this way, it argues for an integrated theoretical approach to a set of texts that operate at the complex intersection between Britain’s colonial past and the complexity of contemporary globality as well as across local, national, and transnational literary contexts.

Education for Total Liberation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Education for Total Liberation - - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Education for Total Liberation is a collection of essays from leaders in the field of critical animal pedagogy (CAP). CAP emerges from activist educators teaching critical animal studies and is rooted in critical theory as well as the animal advocacy movement. Critical animal studies (CAS) argues for an interdisciplinary approach to understanding our relationships with nonhuman animals. CAS challenges two specific fields of theory: (1) animal studies, rooted in vivisection and testing on animals in the hard sciences and (2) human-animal studies, which reinforces a socially constructed binary between humans and animals and adopts abstract theoretical approaches. In contrast, CAS takes a progressive and committed approach to scholarship and sees the exploitation of nonhuman animals as interrelated with oppression of humans based on class, gender, race, ability, sexuality, age, and citizenship. CAS promotes the liberation of all animals and challenges all systems of domination. Education for Total Liberation is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate level readers (and beyond) who wish to learn from examples of radical pedagogical projects shaped by CAS and critical pedagogy. Contributing to this collection are Anne C. Bell, Anita de Melo, Carolyn Drew, Amber E. George, Karin Gunnarsson Dinker, Sinem Ketenci, John Lupinacci, Anthony J. Nocella II, Sean Parson, Helena Pedersen, Ian Purdy, Constance L. Russell, J.L. Schatz, Meneka Repka, William E. Shanahan III, and Richard J, White.

Building Effective Crisis Communications for Disaster Recovery - Yue Hu - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Building Effective Crisis Communications for Disaster Recovery - Yue Hu - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Building Effective Crisis Communications for Disaster Recovery: A Case of Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation in Sichuan, China reviews and evaluates public relations (PR) campaigns launched by the Chinese government to facilitate long-term disaster recovery after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. The Discourse of Renewal (DR) theory is employed to guide the study and explore how the Chinese government utilized communication to help communities recover from disaster and promote community growth. Steered by the co-creational perspective, this book also examines the influence of PR campaigns on the public’s situation awareness, attitude agreement, perceived care and concern, and ultimately the public’s relationship with the Chinese government in renewal. In addition to developing and testing a DR evaluation model, this study investigates the communication obstacles that constrain the effectiveness of DR. In-depth interviews, content analysis, and surveys are conducted to analyze the themes, characteristics, effectiveness, and barriers of the campaigns. The findings of Building Effective Crisis Communications for Disaster Recovery include that (1) DR theory, which has heretofore been developed and applied mainly in Western culture, can inform the study of crisis communication in an Eastern culture, especially in China, (2) DR employed in government campaigns can be very powerful in achieving PR goals in crisis renewal, and (3) imbalanced deployment of campaign resources can affect the outcome of DR. This book also discusses the implications of utilizing these findings to better plan and implement long-term DR campaigns.

Liberation from Empire - Cheryl S. Pero - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Liberation from Empire - Cheryl S. Pero - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Liberation from Empire investigates the phenomenon of demonic possession and exorcism in the Gospel of Mark. The Marcan narrator writes from an anti-imperialistic point of view with allusions to, yet never directly addressing, the Roman Empire. In his baptism, Jesus was authorized by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit to wage cosmic war with Satan. In Jesus’ first engagement, his testing in the wilderness, Jesus bound the strong one, Satan. Jesus explains this encounter in the Beelzebul controversy. Jesus’ ministry continues an on-going battle with Satan, binding the strong one’s minions, demonic/unclean spirits, and spreading holiness to the possessed until he is crucified on a Roman cross. The battle is still not over at Jesus’ death, for at Jesus’ parousia God will make a final apocalyptic judgment. Jesus’ exorcisms have cosmic, apocalyptic, and anti-imperial implications. For Mark, demonic possession was different from sickness or illness, and exorcism was different from healing. Demonic possession was totally under the control of a hostile non-human force; exorcism was full deliverance from a domineering existence that restored the demoniac to family, to community, and to God’s created order. Jesus commissioned the twelve to be with him, to learn from him, and to proclaim the kingdom of God by participating with him in healing and exorcism. Jesus expands his invitation to participate in building the kingdom of God to all those who choose to become part of his new dyadic family even today.

Socio-Economic Impact of Special Economic Zones in Gujarat - Mehal Pandya - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Socio-Economic Impact of Special Economic Zones in Gujarat - Mehal Pandya - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Gujarat is the nursery for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in India; the very first Asian EPZ was housed in Gujarat in 1965. This study examines the contribution of Gujarat SEZs in socioeconomic development with specific research questions: (1) Are SEZs in Gujarat effective on the development front in the context of social and economic aspects? (2) What is the impact assessment of Gujarat SEZs by reckoning metrics based on direct economic impact, indirect/wider economic impact and social impact? (3) How can vacant land in SEZ be optimally utilized in Gujarat to fulfill the SEZ objectives? In the first of the three phases a model (research concept) was constructed from the literature to explore and validate the variables within the SEZs‘ influence on the social and economic development. The second part is a combination of single cross-sectional descriptive research design and empirical research with the use of quantitative techniques such as questionnaires and interviews with various stakeholders. This part was concerned with the establishment and testing of the hypothesis. Through a multilayer perceptron neuron network built with use of various statistical tools and techniques, the factors for socioeconomic development were ranked to get the final model with predictor importance. In the third part the important parameters were validated and a cross-comparison case study was done to obtain a confirmation of the findings. The extremely important factors are increase in exports, indirect jobs, logistics and minimum wages. The final model with predictor importance with target of SEZ impact on socioeconomic development features economic factors, social factors, indirect economic and other local factors in descending order of importance. Some optimal uses of vacant land as derived from the research findings include conversion of sector specific SEZs to multiproduct SEZs with a few service sector units in the mix and broad banding of SEZs.

United States Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam - Michael Haas - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

United States Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam - Michael Haas - Bog - Peter Lang Publishing Inc - Plusbog.dk

Dr. Michael Haas’ book, United States Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam: Explaining Failure and Success , aims to explain a significant, beguiling discrepancy in U.S. foreign relations: How has American diplomacy with Vietnam proved so successful when compared with its efforts to negotiate with North Korea? Haas undertakes a comparative analysis of foreign policy decisions to determine how relationships between the U.S. and each country have diverged drastically, in spite of a legacy of U.S. occupation in both regions. By tracing diplomatic interactions historically, comparatively quantifying diplomatic missteps on the part of the U.S., and cross-testing four paradigms of international relations, Haas presents a case for why the U.S. has succeeded in developing good relations with Vietnam while failing to achieve them with North Korea. Nuclear war haunts the world today because the U.S. has refused to negotiate a peace agreement with North Korea for more than six decades, yet the U.S. is on friendly terms today with Vietnam, a former enemy. This book answers why, finding that Washington’s diplomacy with both countries explains the dramatic difference. Among four theories posed, power politics and presidential politics are refuted as explanations. Mass society theory, which focuses on civil society, finds that negotiations regarding American soldiers missing in action paved the way for success with Vietnam but not with North Korea. But diplomacy theory—tracing moves and countermoves during diplomatic interactions—reveals the real source of the problem: The United States provided reciprocated unilateral positive gestures to Vietnam while repeatedly double crossing North Korea. Although Pyongyang repeatedly offered to give up nuclear developments, Washington offered no alternative to Pyongyang but to develop a nuclear deterrent to safeguard the country against a devious and hostile U.S. The book, in short, serves as a serious corrective to false narratives and options being disseminated about the situation that fail to appreciate North Korea perspectives. Now that North Korea has a nuclear deterrent, diplomacy is the only route toward a de-escalation of tensions so that the United States can live peacefully with North Korea in a manner similar to its relations with nuclear China and nuclear Russia. More broadly, United States Diplomacy with North Korea and Vietnam demonstrates what happens when Washington plays the role of global bully, whereas more resources are needed for developing diplomatic talent in a world that will otherwise become more dangerous.
