2 Nocturnes op. 9/2 - op. 27/2

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908), is one of the most important and most successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century. Apart from works of his own, Sarasate also arranged other works for his own use, such asthese two 'Nocturnes' by Frédéric Chopin. To pianists, it may seem like sacrilege to arrange such masterpieces but Sarasate wanted to transfer some of the most beautiful and most tender melodies to the violin which he sawprimarily as a vocal instrument.

The Cantilène is based on a melody of the 18th century, probably by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736), popular in several countries with different texts: Que ne suis-je la fougère, Bonne nuit les petits, Adieu, pauvre carnaval, San Pantzar, Wa habibi, among others.The Humoresque is a varied rondo using the characteristic tonalities of the txistu (a basque flute with three holes) : F major, D minor, C major, A minor, B flat major, G minor, Eb major, C minor, Ab major and F minor.

Golliwogg's Cakewalk : from Children's Corner

The famous Golliwogg's Cakewalk is the final piece from Debussy's cycle Children's Corner which consists of 6 miniatures for piano, written for his daughter in the years 1906-1908. The style corresponds to that of ragtime, a dancewhich was in vogue around the turn of the century. In the middle section, he parodies several times the beginning of the opera Tristan and Isolde by Richard Wagner with whom Debussy had a rather ambiguous relationship. The presentarrangement now allows musicians to play the popular movement in a version for piano trio.

Carmina Burana : Cantiones profanae

Carmina Burana, first performed in 1937, is based on an important collection of thirteenth-century poems found in the monastery of Benediktbeuren. Carl Orff made selections from this collection and in robust and delicate musicalcolors painted a manifold picture of life. Everything I have written up to now, and which you have unfortunately printed, you can shred into pulp. My collected works begin with 'Carmina Burana'. Carl Orff wrote to his publisherafter the premiere. And so it was that his work caused a sensation in the whole world and continues to delight people of all cultures. The 'Carmina Burana' are written for solo singers, chorus and orchestra. Full score.

Drei Stücke Op. 11 : Aus Der Musik Zu Shakespeares Viel Lärmen Um Nichts

New incidental music was required for a performance of William Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado about Nothing in the Schönbrunn Schlosstheater in Vienna in 1920. Erich Wolfgang Korngold had already composed this music two yearspreviously - he also conducted the première in May 1920. In January of the same year however, Korngold's entertaining suite also received its first performance and its catchy melodies have guaranteed its popularity up to thepresent day. A third version arranged by the composer for string quartet surfaced at an auction in 1984 : this version of the work had however never been performed. The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde [Society of Music Lovers] inVienna succeeded in purchasing this three-movement version which will receive its much belated performance almost a century after its creation.

Caprice basque op. 24

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is one of the most important and successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world ofviolin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'ScottishFantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. In 'Caprice Basque' (Capricho vasco) Op. 24, Sarasate used Spanish folk tunes. He dedicated this piece to the composer, conductor and pianist Otto Goldschmidt, apupil of Mendelssohn. This work is influenced by the typically dotted rhythm of the 'zortzico', a Basque dance in 5/8 meter - a virtuoso and rousing piece for virtuosos.

Popp for Flute : 7 European Salon Pieces

In the 19th century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, potpourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folkelements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his easilyplayable_x001A_compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passagesso well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition isessentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces - with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.
