The Century Girls - Tessa Dunlop - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'Tessa Dunlop...succeeds in weaving a rich tapestry of experiences.' Independent ‘A warm-hearted and engaging read, The Century Girls is replete with wonderful characters.’ Sunday Express 'A delightful book... all about women and women's lives.' Jane Garvey, Radio 4 Woman's Hour 'It’s a brilliant book… It’s fantastic!' Chris Evans, Radio 2 Breakfast Show A celebration of the one-hundred years since British women got the vote, told, in their own voices, by six centenarians: Helena, Olive, Edna, Joyce, Ann and Phyllis – The Century Girls In 2018, Britain celebrated the centenary of some women getting the vote . The intervening ten decades have witnessed staggering change, and The Century Girls features six women born in 1918 or before who haven’t just witnessed that change, they’ve lived it. Empire shrank, war came and went, and modern society demanded continual readjustment.... the Century Girls lasted the course, and this book weaves together their lifetime’s adventures – what they were taught, how they were treated, who they loved, what they did and where they are now. With stories that are intimately knitted into the history of the British Isles, this is a time-travel epic featuring our oldest, most precious national treasures. Edna , 102, was a domestic servant born in Lincolnshire. Helena is 101 years old and the eldest of eight born into a Welsh farming family. Olive , 102, began life as a child of empire in British Guiana and was one of the first women to migrate to London after the war. There’s Ann, a 103-year-London bohemian; 100-year-old Phyllis , daughter of the British Raj, who has called Edinburgh home for nearly eighty years; and finally ‘young’ Joyce – a 99-year-old Cambridge classicist who’s still at work. It is through the prism of these women’s very long lives that The Century Girls provides a deeply personal account of British history over the past one hundred years. Their story is our story too.

On the Road - James Naughtie - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The acclaimed author and BBC broadcaster on US politics and the American dream, from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump. James Naughtie, the acclaimed author and BBC broadcaster , now brings his unique and inquisitive eye to the country that has fascinated him and drawn him across the Atlantic for half a century. In looking at America , from Presidents Nixon through to Biden , he tells the story of a country that is grappling with a dream. What has it come to mean in the new century, and who do Americans now think they are? Drawing on his travels and encounters over forty years in the ‘Land of the Free’, On The Road is filled with anecdotes , memories , tears and laughter reflecting Naughtie’s characteristic warmth and enthusiasm in encountering the America of Washington, of Broadway, of the small town and the plains . As a student, Naughtie watched the fall of President Richard Nixon in 1974 , and subsequently as a journalist followed the story of the country – its politicians, artists, wheeler-dealers and the people who make it what it is, in the New York melting pot or the western deserts. This is a story filled with encounters, for example with the people he has watched on every presidential campaign from the late 1970s to the victory of Joe Biden in 2020. This edition is fully updated to include Naughtie's fascinating insights on the controversial presidential election battle in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

India Conquered - Jon Wilson - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

India Conquered - Jon Wilson - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

'The product of many years of detailed archival research, Wilson’s book is without question the best one-volume history of the Raj currently in print.' - William Dalrymple, The Guardian ‘The core of the book is a virtuoso takedown of cherished shibboleths of Raj mythology’ Financial Times ‘A forceful reminder that Britain has its own messy past to come to terms with’ Guardian In the nineteenth century, imperial India was at the centre of Britain’s global power. But since its partition between India and Pakistan in 1947, the Raj has divided opinion: some celebrate its supposed role in creating much that is good in the modern world; others condemn it as the cause of continuing poverty. Today, the Raj lives on in faded images of Britain’s former glory, a notion used now to sell goods in India as well as Europe. But its real character has been poorly understood. India Conquered is the first general history of British India for over twenty years, getting under the skin of empire to show how British rule really worked. Oscillating between paranoid paralysis and moments of extreme violence, it was beset by chaos and chronic weakness. Jon Wilson argues that this contradictory character was a consequence of the Raj’s failure to create long-term relationships with Indian society and claims that these systemic problems still affect the world’s largest democracy as it navigates the twenty-first century. ‘This is a brave and long overdue riposte to Raj romanticists’ John Keay

Empires - Jonathan Foreman - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Travelling the world to undertake his research, Jonathan Foreman explores how empire lies at the heart of some of the greatest challenges that currently face civilisation. From the grandest of territories conquered and administered over centuries, to the smaller regional conquests that lasted decades, Foreman paints a picture of how urbanised humanity has learned to live – or indeed, endure – and evolve under this system of governance and domination , right up until the present digital age . In the early modern period ‘empire’ meant ‘sovereignty’ rather than dominion over several different lands or peoples. In the 18th century ‘empire’ was used to suggest size or grandeur. It wasn’t until at least the middle of the 19th century that Britons consistently referred to their possessions and interests abroad as an empire. Mostly when people used the phrase 'British Empire' they were actually referring to the United Kingdom of the British Isles. In the modern era , ‘empire’ is used mostly to refer to the exercise of power by a state over subordinate territories. But it has also, for centuries, been used metaphorically to describe other forms of great power and domination that transcend borders. Indeed, it’s hard to think of any country which has had an empire that wasn’t itself part of another empire at some earlier time, or of a colonising power that at some point had been colonised. Jonathan Foreman suggests the ‘Era of Empires’ is not over; it just has different names and new forms. It is a global experience that long predates the word itself.

Witchcraft - Marion Gibson - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Witchcraft - Marion Gibson - Bog - Simon & Schuster Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Salem, King James VI, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch hunts and witch trials sounds antiquated, relics of an unenlightened and brutal age. However, 'witch hunt' is heard often in the present-day media, and the misogyny it is rooted in is all too familiar today. A woman was prosecuted under the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 1944. This book uses thirteen significant trials to explore the history of witchcraft and witch hunts. As well as investigating some of the most famous trials from the middle ages to the 18th century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was decriminalised in the 18th century, only to be reimagined by the 1780s Romantic radicals. We will learn how it evolved from being seen as a threat to Christianity to perceived as gendered persecution, and how trials against chieftains in Africa stoked anger against colonial rule. Significantly, the book tells the stories of the victims - women, such as Helena Scheuberin and Joan Wright - whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James VI and I and “Witchfinder General” Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. While this will be a history of witchcraft, the subject cannot be consigned to the history books. Hundreds of people, mostly women, are tried and killed as witches every year in Africa. ‘WITCH HUNT!’ is as common in our language today as ever it was, and witches are still on trial across the world.
