Tilings of the Plane - Ehrhard Behrends - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The aim of the book is to study symmetries and tesselation, which have long interested artists and mathematicians. Famous examples are the works created by the Arabs in the Alhambra and the paintings of the Dutch painter Maurits Escher. Mathematicians did not take up the subject intensively until the 19th century. In the process, the visualisation of mathematical relationships leads to very appealing images. Three approaches are described in this book. In Part I, it is shown that there are 17 principally different possibilities of tesselation of the plane, the so-called ''plane crystal groups''. Complementary to this, ideas of Harald Heesch are described, who showed how these theoretical results can be put into practice: He gave a catalogue of 28 procedures that one can use creatively oneself - following in the footsteps of Escher, so to speak - to create artistically sophisticated tesselation. In the corresponding investigations for the complex plane in Part II, movements are replaced by bijective holomorphic mappings. This leads into the theory of groups of Möbius transformations: Kleinian groups, Schottky groups, etc. There are also interesting connections to hyperbolic geometry. Finally, in Part III, a third aspect of the subject is treated, the Penrose tesselation. This concerns results from the seventies, when easily describable and provably non-periodic parquetisations of the plane were given for the first time.

Privatization and Deregulation - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Privatization and Deregulation - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Agribusiness development has been constrained by distorted economic policies and institutional controls in the emerging market economies and in most of the developing countries. In the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the agribusiness complex was dominated by state-owned enter prises. In many of the developing countries, economic policies discriminated against agriculture and agribusiness. The results have been obvious. Despite major technological advances, agriculture and agribusiness sectors in these economies remained inefficient. A large share of the population, particu larly in the rural areas, has not been able to improve household incomes and living standards. The final decade of the 20th century will certainly be recorded as one of the most dynamic in modem history. The restructuring of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and market reforms in many of the developing countries are progressing at a rapid pace. Agribusiness is key to economic perfor mance in these areas in that agriculture is an important sector in many of these economies. Economic transition to a market economy is presenting many challenges and opportunities to accelerate the process of agribusiness development, which is so essential to alleviate rural poverty. An international symposium, organized by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), provided a unique opportunity to discuss needed policy reforms to promote efficient and competitive agribusiness develop ment, with a particular focus on privatization and deregulation.

The Idea of Phenomenology - Edmund Husserl - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

The Idea of Phenomenology - Edmund Husserl - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This translation is concluded in our Readings in Twentieth Century Philosophy, (N. Y. , The Free Press of Glencoe, Inc. , 1963). We owe thanks to Professors W. D. Falk and William Hughes for helping us with the translation. We also owe thanks to Professor Herbert Spiegelberg, Dr. Walter Biemel and the Husser! Archives at Louvain for checking it and we are especially indebted to Professor Dorion Cairns, many of whose suggestions we incorporated in the final draft. WILLIAM P. ALSTON GEORGE NAKHNIKIAN January 1964 CONTENTS V Preface Introduction IX The train of thoughts in the lectures I Lecture I 13 Lecture II 22 Lecture III 33 Lecture IV 43 Lecture V 52 INTRODUCTION From April 26 to May 2, 1907, Husserl delivered five lectures in Gottingen. They introduce the main ideas of his later pheno menology, the one that goes beyond the phenomenology of the Logische Untersuchungen. These lectures and Husserl''s summary of them entitled "The Train of Thoughts in the Lectures" were edited by Dr. Walter Biemel and first published in 1950 under the 1 title Die Idee der Phiinomenologie. Husserl wrote the summary on the night of the last lecture, not for formal delivery but for his own use. This accounts for the fact that the summary contains incomplete sentences. There are some discrepancies between Lecture V and the corresponding passages in the summary. We may suppose that the passages in the summary are a closer approximation to what Husserl wanted to say.

Artificial Intelligence in Society - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Artificial Intelligence in Society - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Artificial intelligence (AI) represents a key technology for social change in the 21st century. Numerous technological applications are now in use that are based on machine learning and the associated possibilities for data collection, use and exploitation. By making large amounts of data manageable and hidden patterns and connections visible, AI makes many things faster, easier and more efficient - be it in everyday life, at work or in organizations. However, the question remains open as to what profound and sometimes latent consequences for humans as social beings and social coexistence are associated with the use and development of AI. How is the relationship between people and technology changing through AI and how should this change be assessed? What opportunities and risks do the use and development of AI open up for people and society? What are the limits of change and what design options are available? And last but not least: What and who determines the development paths that AI takes - with what consequences and for whom? Some of the articles in this volume have been automatically translated into English by Springer (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). The contributions were then thoroughly revised, corrected and supplemented by the authors. The authors are therefore responsible not only for the content, but also for the linguistic form of the articles. Nevertheless, the text of the book may differ stylistically from a conventional translation.

A History of the Royal College of General Practitioners - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

John P. Horder, President, 1980-82 The first 30 years of the College have been an exciting experience for those most closely involved. Some have already passed on, but this account has been written soon enough for many of the actors to be historians. Future members of the College will be grateful to them for what they have written, as well as for what they did as a remarkably determined and harmonious team. Students of twentieth century medicine in this country will also be grateful for a first-hand account of the development of an institution which has been closely associated with, and partly responsible for, important changes in medical care and education. Those who read these pages may wonder how the builders of this young College could have found time to do much general practice. They did. The three editors of this history, which covers 25 years, and the general practitioner members of the Steering Committee all ran large practices, in which they worked very hard throughout that time. Most of their work for the College was done during off-duty hours, weekends and holidays. The College could not have developed as it did, had they not been personally concerned with the practical problems and needs of clinical medicine. This is also true of many of the contributors. It is impossible to mention everyone who deserves credit. The editors hope that they may be forgiven for any serious omissions.

Landscape Planning with Ecosystem Services - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Landscape Planning with Ecosystem Services - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Human well-being depends in many ways on maintaining the stock of natural resources which deliver the services from which human''s benefit. However, these resources and flows of services are increasingly threatened by unsustainable and competing land uses. Particular threats exist to those public goods whose values are not well-represented in markets or whose deterioration will only affect future generations. As market forces alone are not sufficient, effective means for local and regional planning are needed in order to safeguard scarce natural resources, coordinate land uses and create sustainable landscape structures. This book argues that a solution to such challenges in Europe can be found by merging the landscape planning tradition with ecosystem services concepts. Landscape planning has strengths in recognition of public benefits and implementation mechanisms, while the ecosystem services approach makes the connection between the status of natural assets and human well-being more explicit. It can also provide an economic perspective, focused on individual preferences and benefits, which helps validate the acceptability of environmental planning goals. Thus linking landscape planning and ecosystem services provides a two-way benefit, creating a usable science to meet the needs of local and regional decision making. The book is structured around the Driving forces-Pressures-States-Impacts-Responses framework, providing an introduction to relevant concepts, methodologies and techniques. It presents a new, ecosystem services-informed, approach to landscape planning that constitutes both a framework and toolbox for students and practitioners to address the environmental and landscape challenges of 21 st century Europe.
