The present volume of the Boerhaave series intends to be a reflexion of our present knowledge in the expanding field of early diagnosis and prevention of inherited disorders. Early diagnosis can mean detection of a carrier state in one or both potential parents, detection of a specific inherited disease in a previously born child or during a pregnancy at risk, or during various stages of the life of an already born individual. The first chapters will discuss inherited disorders manifesting later in life. In Huntington''s Chorea detection may be possible from the age of 20 or 30 onwards, while in myotonic dystrophy it will be seen that detection may be possible soon after birth. Retinoblastoma serves as example of a disease manifesting in early infancy and which is partially treatable by surgical intervention. The same early onset does occur in phenylketonuria and cystic fibrosis. Both diseases provide examples of the possibilities of population screening, while in phenylketonuria an eminently succesful treatment is found in a restricted diet. For the usually early manifesting sphingolipidoses no treatment exists as yet, but enzyme treatment might in the near future become a reality. Spina bifida and anencephaly are not simple inherited Mendelian dis­ orders but they are discussed in this volume because prevention is possible by antenatal diagnosis and subsequent interruption of the pregnancy if re­ quested by the future parents. Further views on antenatal diagnosis notably in inborn errors of metabolism are presented in a following chapter.

In the scientific aspects of immunology, the pace of advance has been almost overwhelming, but with some notable exceptions, clinical benefits have been slow. For those who are interested in allergy, the situation has been somewhat different. Here, the scientific aspects have lagged sadly behind other branches of immunology. There has, however, been a recent explosion of knowledge, which began with the discovery of immunoglobulin E, and a curious situation has come to light. The speculations of the older allergists, which had often been derided as mere inventions, now appear to be largely true. A number of ''preposterous'' hypotheses have acquired the respectability that comes with scientific proof and the entire field is now full of excitement and challenge. It is no longer doubted that ''reaginic'' antibody can sensitize cells that reside beneath the surface of the skin or mucous membranes. Skin prick tests with ''hair of the tail of the dog'' have been legitimized by correlating them with the carefully validated results of radioallergosorbent tests. It has furthermore been shown beyond doubt that immunotherapy with increasing amounts of bee venom really can ''hyposensitize'' patients who have previously suffered anaphylactic reactions to bee stings. This book has been published in the hope that, in the field of allergy, it will bridge the gap between basic science and the clinical application.

Through numerous conversations with other synthetic chemists it became apparent that the great power of carbon nuclear magnetic resonance was being significantly underutilized. In our own work we have found that 13C spectroscopy is a more powerful tool than IH NMR spectroscopy, especially for probing subtle stereochemical questions in complicated systems. This is especially true in five membered ring compounds where IH NMR is at a particular disadvantage. The two techniques can be used independently to solve the same question-that of stereochemistry - but they do so in different ways. Advantage can be taken in IH NMR of a relatively consistent relationship between stereochemical orientation and coupling constants between vicinal protons, while in 13C NMR it is the correlation between spatial relationships of non-hydrogen, y substituents and their effect on chemical shift that can be used to assign stereochemistry. It was also clear that the use of 13C NMR required a different approach to problem solving than that typically used with IH NMR. While the latter technique could be employed with a very general approach (e.g., the Karplus equation), 13C NMR would, at least for the immediate future, require a relatively extensive set of model systems from which the consequences of stereochemical changes could be derived for any given carbon framework.

The Third International Symposiumn on Aquatic Oligochaeta was organized by Drs. 0. Giere, M. Dzwillo, R. Grimm and colleagues. Over 50 scientists attended, and while the number of nationalities dropped from 17 to 12, we were pleased to welcome our first Chinese delegation. At a brief business meeting, the invitation to attend the Fourth Symposium at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, US.A., hosted by Walter Harman in 1988 was approved. The meeting is scheduled to begin on March 15. An invitation to hold the meeting in the Soviet Union was presented for Thrmo Timm in his absence, and it was agreed unanimously that the 1991 meetings be held there, perhaps at Thllin on the Gulf of Finland. Christer Erseus has agreed to consider G6teborg, Sweden as an alternate for 1991 and as a positive invitation for 1994, so we are well prepared for the future. Olav Giere has recently expressed opinions about publishing the proceedings of conferences that make it clear why he is not the editor of this volume. Michael Dzwillo was prevented from completing the task by pres­ sure of other business, and so we undertook the task somewhat late. While we share much of Olav Giere''s concern about such volumes, an honest attempt to review the papers does help to maintain quality, and both of us wish to thank contributors for their positive response to our often quite drastic re-writing of manuscripts.

But neither his type of "bureaucratic rule" nor his concept of "rational work organization" - although both are tailored to modern conditions - contain, on closer inspection, compelling arguments for a principled limitation of organizations as such to modernity. Both actually reach their depth of focus only in contrast to "pre-modern" forms of organization. A sociology of organization that wants to refer to Max Weber''s work while avoiding the numerous common misunderstandings of its reception must broaden its historical view and consider the possibility of "pre-modern organizations".

David Degenhardt develops an elasto-viscoplastic material model in order to predict the temperature and strain rate-dependent deformation and fracture behavior of thermoplastic polymers. The model bases on three supporting ambient temperatures, where a thermoplastic polymer has been characterized profoundly at the stress states 1) uni-axial tension and compression, 2) bi-axial tension and 3) shear. The core of the material model builds a pressure-dependent yield function with a non-associated flow rule. Further, it contains an analytical hardening law and a strain rate-dependent fracture criterion. The model is validated with components subjected to impact loading at different ambient temperatures. The comparison of the simulation and the experiments shows that stiffness, hardening, fractures strain as well as thicknesses can be well captured. This volume provides an ethnographic description of Muslim merit-making rhetoric, rituals and rationales in Thailand''s Malay far-south. This study is situated in Cabetigo, one of Pattani''s oldest and most important Malay communities that has been subjected to a range of Thai and Islamic influences over the last hundred years. The volume describes religious rhetoric related to merit-making being conducted in both Thai and Malay, that the spiritual currency of merit is generated through the performance of locally occurring Malay adat , and globally normative amal ''ibadat. Concerning the rationale for merit-making, merit-makers are motivated by both a desire to ensure their own comfort in the grave and personal vindication at judgment, as well as to transfer merit for those already in the grave, who are known to the merit-maker. While the rhetoric elements of Muslim merit-making reveal Thai influence, its ritual elements confirm the local impact of reformist activism.

This book continues the tradition of the first two editions of the late W. S. Penn''s original PVC Technology, and the extensively revised third (1971) edition prepared by myself and B. J. Lanham. In the present edition the original general format, and the arrange­ ment of chapters, have been largely preserved, but virtually nothing now remains of Penn''s own text: a part of the contents is based on material from the 1971 TitowlLanham version (revised, updated and mainly rewritten): the rest is new, including, inter alia, several chapters specially contributed by experts from the plastics industry in the UK and Europe. The section listing international (ISO) and national (BS, ASTM and DIN) standards relevant to PVC, which was first intro­ duced (as Appendix 1) in the 1971 edition, proved a popularfeature: it has now been brought up to date and considerably extended. Two further appendices provide, respectively, comprehensive unit conver­ sion"tables (with additional information on some ofthe mostfrequently encountered units, and the SI units), and a list of many properties of interest in PVC materials, with definitions, typical numerical values, and references~to relevant standard test methods. For various reasons, work on this edition involved more than the usual quota of problems: I am truly grateful to the Publisher''s Manag­ ing Editor, Mr G. B. Many clinical problems of transport have been known for decades, par­ ticularly those disorders involving the liver and kidney. As a result of the dramatic increase in interest in transport at the membrane level the Society devoted its Seventeenth Symposium, held at Leeds during September 1979, to Transport and Inherited Disease, the result of that meeting forming the basis of this monograph. For the occasion over a hundred members and guests of the Society were joined by many invited speakers from Europe and the USA to discuss this rapidly developing field with special reference to the direct interests of the Society - in­ herited metabolic disease. The major theme of the meeting was opened with formal scientific presentations on membrane structure, synthesis and the regulation of epithelial transport. These were followed by discussions of specific prob­ lems of transport in brain, kidney and red blood cells. Almost all of these later lectures had clinical applications with cystic fibrosis and nephro­ genic diabetes insipidus featuring as examples of the common inherited diseases. The Hudson Memorial Lecture was delivered by Professor H. Bickel (Heidelberg). This outstanding review lecture on ''Phenylketonuri- past, present and future'' is reproduced in the Journal of the Society - the Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease (Volume 3 No.4, pp.123-132). xiii xiv PREFACE The members'' papers (both oral and poster) are also being reprinted in various issues of the Journal (published by MTP Press Ltd., Lancaster, UK).

Magnetic resonance imaging has already become a most valuable imaging modality in the diagnostic work-up of musculoskeletal neoplasms. While high accuracy of MRI for staging purposes has been proven, we will focus in this monograph on the characterization of primary bone and soft tissue tumors by MRI. The major purpose of this monograph is to provide an atlas of magnetic resonance features of primary bone and soft tissue tumors for radiologists, orthopedic surgeons and physiotherapists. The results presented are based on investigations of 94 primary bone and soft tissue tumors and mimicking conditions by magnetic resonance imaging. Although the scale of the material allows for statistical handling, the number of patients per subgroup is too small to come to definite conclusions. We will therefore limit ourselves to the description of and comments on a great number of cases to illustrate the diagnostic potential of this new imaging modality.
