PVC Technology - M.v. Titow - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book continues the tradition of the first two editions of the late W. S. Penn''s original PVC Technology, and the extensively revised third (1971) edition prepared by myself and B. J. Lanham. In the present edition the original general format, and the arrange ment of chapters, have been largely preserved, but virtually nothing now remains of Penn''s own text: a part of the contents is based on material from the 1971 TitowlLanham version (revised, updated and mainly rewritten): the rest is new, including, inter alia, several chapters specially contributed by experts from the plastics industry in the UK and Europe. The section listing international (ISO) and national (BS, ASTM and DIN) standards relevant to PVC, which was first intro duced (as Appendix 1) in the 1971 edition, proved a popularfeature: it has now been brought up to date and considerably extended. Two further appendices provide, respectively, comprehensive unit conver sion"tables (with additional information on some ofthe mostfrequently encountered units, and the SI units), and a list of many properties of interest in PVC materials, with definitions, typical numerical values, and references~to relevant standard test methods. For various reasons, work on this edition involved more than the usual quota of problems: I am truly grateful to the Publisher''s Manag ing Editor, Mr G. B. Olley, for his understanding, patience, unfailing courtesy and friendly encouragement.

Environmental Science Methods - Robin Haynes - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Environmental Science Methods - Robin Haynes - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book is an introduction to a range of methods and techniques used in the scientific study of the rocks, soils, atmosphere, waters and living organisms of the Earth, and of the relationships of these environmental factors with human activities. It is intended to provide a selection of methods for students taking university courses in geography, geology, meteorology, hydrology, soil science, ecology and other allied environmental sciences. The contributors are all members of the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, and the book has developed from part of our course for first year students. It reflects our belief that students of vast complex environmental systems should begin their work with a panoramic view, whatever their ultimate specialization. The emphasis is therefore on breadth of treatment and on the connections between the various sciences. We have summarized and simplified in order to supply a collection of methods that can be managed by a beginning student. We start from basic principles and do not assume that the reader already has a strong scientific background. Eleven chapters follow, each dealing with a group of closely related methods and techniques. They may be taken in any order, although there are many cross references which demonstrate that the subjects covered are not eleven isolated techniques but a web of related principles. The first three topics illustrate the point.

Medicine in Three Societies - John Fry - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Transport and Inherited Disease - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Transport and Inherited Disease - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Many clinical problems of transport have been known for decades, par ticularly those disorders involving the liver and kidney. As a result of the dramatic increase in interest in transport at the membrane level the Society devoted its Seventeenth Symposium, held at Leeds during September 1979, to Transport and Inherited Disease, the result of that meeting forming the basis of this monograph. For the occasion over a hundred members and guests of the Society were joined by many invited speakers from Europe and the USA to discuss this rapidly developing field with special reference to the direct interests of the Society - in herited metabolic disease. The major theme of the meeting was opened with formal scientific presentations on membrane structure, synthesis and the regulation of epithelial transport. These were followed by discussions of specific prob lems of transport in brain, kidney and red blood cells. Almost all of these later lectures had clinical applications with cystic fibrosis and nephro genic diabetes insipidus featuring as examples of the common inherited diseases. The Hudson Memorial Lecture was delivered by Professor H. Bickel (Heidelberg). This outstanding review lecture on ''Phenylketonuri- past, present and future'' is reproduced in the Journal of the Society - the Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease (Volume 3 No.4, pp.123-132). xiii xiv PREFACE The members'' papers (both oral and poster) are also being reprinted in various issues of the Journal (published by MTP Press Ltd., Lancaster, UK).

This sounded more like an underwater sexual activity than anything else, but I confessed ignorance! Several more requests highlighted my complete lack of knowledge of this subject and stimulated me into activity.

Lead Exposure and Child Development - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

Lead Exposure and Child Development - - Bog - Springer - Plusbog.dk

This book arises out of a workshop on lead exposure and child development which was held at the University of Edinburgh on 8th-12th September 1986. It was organized jointly by the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in association with the UK Department of the Environment and the Scottish Home and Health Department. It brought together most of the internationally recognized groups working on the effects of lead exposure on child development including child psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, stati sticians, and medical practitioners. One of the unique features of the meeting was that it included workers from initially separate fields of lead research, in particular those undertaking studies in infants and in older children, and those carrying out behavioural research in animals, as well as those undertaking biochemical studies on mechanisms of lead effect. The structure of this book reflects the main elements of the meeting. As such it includes three main sections. The first consists of two major state-of the-art reviews, and two invited introductory papers. The reviews were prepared for the organizers of the conference by two of the Editors. The objectives were to assess critically the state of current knowledge in this field and to provide a scientific basis both for policy decisions and for further research. The review prepared by Marjorie Smith for the Commission of the European Communities focusses on methodological and design issues, and summarizes our present scientific knowledge in this area.
