The Microbiome - Richard Lucius - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

The Microbiome - Richard Lucius - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book unravels in an easily understandable way the exciting molecular connections between our gut microbiome, i.e. the collective microorganisms that we carry in our digestive system, nutrition and the immune system, and how an imbalance can lead to the development of inflammatory diseases. The totality of these gut microorganisms forms a complex ecosystem within us, consisting of hundreds of different species of bacteria. The author, microbiologist Professor Richard Lucius, introduces the historical context of microbiome research, discusses how our lives have changed in recent decades, and explains the composition and function of the microbiome and its connection to the gut and immune system. The book explains in detail and supported with appealing illustrations how allergies, chronic intestinal inflammation, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and coeliac disease develop. Further chapters deal with the effects of nutrition on our intestinal flora and provide tips on building and maintaining a healthy microbiome. An intact bacterial community utilizes food residues that humans cannot digest and in return provides energy and vital substances. Only together with our inhabitants do we form a well-functioning "superorganism". Our immune system, which has developed over millions of years, is calibrated for a meagre, natural life. Under the influence of our modern way of life, the "Western lifestyle", our inner ecosystem is suffering from a loss of species, similar to our external environment. Highly processed foods, the influence of medication, lack of exercise and little contact with environmental bacteria are promoting this erosion process, which in the long term increases the risk of inflammatory diseases and obesity. As a result, more than 25% of people in modern societies suffer from allergies, autoimmune diseases and food intolerances that hardly existed in the past. This development can be counteracted by a healthy lifestyle that strengthens and diversifies the microbiome. This book is aimed at anyone who wants to understand the complex interplay between our gut microbiome, the immune system, nutrition and disease. The English translation of this volume, originally published in German language, was facilitated by artificial intelligence. A language editor has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavor to refine the work stylistically. The content was later revised by the author for accuracy.

Sex Differences in Reading and Math Test Scores of Children - Hoben Thomas - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Sex Differences in Reading and Math Test Scores of Children - Hoben Thomas - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This open access book examines why reading and math test scores for boys and girls have differed since the origins of testing in the United States. It details the pattern of differences that have remained largely unchanged for more than 100 years in the United States and worldwide. The book explores why boys have modestly larger math test score means than girls, and why girls have far larger reading test score means than boys. Boys have larger test score variances for both tasks. The only data of focus—and thus the only data to be explained—are boys’ and girls’ test score sample means and variances. In addition, the book provides the only coherent theory of gender differences explaining math and reading test score means and variances obtained in observational settings. It develops the simple genetical idea framed within a finite probability mixture model; it provides parameter estimates and displays numerous estimated probability distributions associated with the selected accessible studies chosen for analysis; and it extends the theory and provides explanations for never understood puzzling features of test score data. The book requires no auxiliary sources, although some understanding of random variables and probability theory is required to follow the formalization. It contains all technical details, including the estimation procedure and an R code implementation. Key areas of coverage include:· Extensive literature summary from a unique data inequalities perspective. · Perspective that challenges existing viewpoints on sex differences, falsifying conventional perspectives. · Illustrates probability modeling of psychological data. · Illustrates the failure of conventional statistics to explain data and the need for modeling data. Sex Differences in Reading and Math Test Scores of Children is an invaluable resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students in educational psychology, teaching and teacher education, literacy / language teaching and learning, mathematics education, curriculum studies, developmental psychology, statistics, and all interrelated disciplines.

Dysbiosis - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This book discusses in detail the pathological aspects associated with alterations in the gut microbiota and the pathogenesis of different disorders related to dysbiosis. The volume describes the impact of dysbiosis on organs other than the gut and brain, such as metabolic diseases, cancer, gynecologic disorders, aging, or pediatric pathologies. Additionally, it associates the mechanisms and metabolic signaling pathways related to gut microbiota homeostasis and alterations with their clinical impact, highlighting the importance of translational research on dysbiosis. The volume is divided into 12 chapters: the first two chapters present diagnostic methods and therapeutic options, including prebiotics and probiotics. The remaining ten chapters specifically focus on diseases of different organs. Moreover, the relevance of these findings to precision medicine will be discussed. The book provides biomedical professionals, basic researchers, and clinical practitioners, especially those specialized in Precision Medicine and Integrative Medicine, with information about the effects of dysbiosis on the physiopathology of various diseases. It also includes updated evidence on the impact of dysbiosis on numerous pathologies, such as metabolic diseases, cancer, gynecologic disorders, aging, or pediatric pathologies, going beyond gastrointestinal and central nervous system diseases typically covered in many publications. Furthermore, the book addresses the translational aspect of dysbiosis. It starts with the basic research knowledge on dysbiosis and disease and aims to provide a translational approach applicable to clinical practice. By combining the fundamental knowledge of biomedical researchers with the clinical applicability of healthcare practitioners, this book bridges the gap between theory and practice.

Excel 2016 in Applied Statistics for High School Students - Thomas J. Quirk - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This textbook is a step-by-step guide for high school, community college, or undergraduate students who are taking a course in applied statistics and wish to learn how to use Excel to solve statistical problems. All of the statistics problems in this book will come from the following fields of study: business, education, psychology, marketing, engineering and advertising. Students will learn how to perform key statistical tests in Excel without being overwhelmed by statistical theory. Each chapter briefly explains a topic and then demonstrates how to use Excel commands and formulas to solve specific statistics problems. This book gives practice in using Excel in two different ways: (1) writing formulas (e.g., confidence interval about the mean, one-group t-test, two-group t-test, correlation) and (2) using Excel’s drop-down formula menus (e.g., simple linear regression, multiple correlations and multiple regression, and one-way ANOVA). Three practice problems are provided at the end of each chapter, along with their solutions in an Appendix. An additional Practice Test allows readers to test their understanding of each chapter by attempting to solve a specific statistics problem using Excel; the solution to each of these problems is also given in an Appendix. This book is a tool that can be used either by itself or along with any good statistics book. - Includes 166 illustrations in color - Suitable for high school and community college students.

Molecular Epidemiology for Infectious Diseases - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

Molecular Epidemiology for Infectious Diseases - - Bog - Springer International Publishing AG - Plusbog.dk

This textbook introduces the reader to molecular epidemiology as a field that improves our understanding of infectious diseases, their natural history, and their control. The sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic prompted an increased awareness about epidemiology and molecular biology. Policy makers have required specialist knowledge to assess the evolving situation and make informed judgements about the clinical and public health implications. This book bridges the gap between primary research and advanced graduate textbooks. The field of molecular epidemiology has developed at the interface between epidemiology and molecular biology as high throughput molecular techniques have become cheaper and increasingly sophisticated for typing pathogen strains and characterising the host immune response. At the same time, bioinformatics and statistical methods have evolved so these complex and high-dimensional data can be analysed in combination with classical epidemiological data on time, person, and place. However, the analysis of datasets combining classical epidemiological and molecular data is highly specialised. Few postgraduate courses cover this topic in sufficient detail to allow meaningful interpretation. This textbook introduces the major methods used to generate molecular datasets and the epidemiological and statistical concepts that are used to link these data with clinical and behavioural data. An introductory chapter explains key terms, definitions and the challenges of accurate and reproducible measurements in microbiology (metrology) and reviews the development of molecular epidemiology as a field and its history. Subsequent chapters introduce the readers to pathogen phylogenetics, host transcriptomics, proteomics, serology, and the microbiome. An additional chapter covers the ethical issues that arise when using molecular data combined with epidemiological and clinical information. The concluding chapter takes a look at the bigger picture and considers the contributions of molecular epidemiology to infectious disease control and health policy.
