Over the past half century, reverse osmosis (RO) has grown from a nascent niche technology into the most versatile and effective desalination and advanced water treatment technology available. However, there remain certain challenges for improving the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of RO desalination plants in various applications. In low-pressure RO applications, both capital (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) costs are largely influenced by product water recovery, which is typically limited by mineral scale formation. In seawater applications, recovery tends to be limited by the salinity limits on brine discharge and cost is dominated by energy demand. The combination of water scarcity and sustainability imperatives, in many locations, is driving system designs towards minimal and zero liquid discharge (M/ZLD) for inland brackish water, municipal and industrial wastewaters, and even seawater desalination. Herein, we review the basic principles of RO processes, the state-of-the-art for RO membranes, modules and system designs as well as methods for concentrating and treating brines to achieve MLD/ZLD, resource recovery and renewable energy powered desalination systems. Throughout, we provide examples of installations employing conventional and some novel approaches towards high recovery RO in a range of applications from brackish groundwater desalination to oil and gas produced water treatment and seawater desalination.

This text presents six mini-courses, all devoted to interactions between representation theory of algebras, homological algebra, and the new ever-expanding theory of cluster algebras. The interplay between the topics discussed in this text will continue to grow and this collection of courses stands as a partial testimony to this new development. The courses are useful for any mathematician who would like to learn more about this rapidly developing field; the primary aim is to engage graduate students and young researchers. Prerequisites include knowledge of some noncommutative algebra or homological algebra. Homological algebra has always been considered as one of the main tools in the study of finite-dimensional algebras. The strong relationship with cluster algebras is more recent and has quickly established itself as one of the important highlights of today’s mathematical landscape. This connection has been fruitful to both areas—representation theory provides a categorification of cluster algebras, while the study of cluster algebras provides representation theory with new objects of study. The six mini-courses comprising this text were delivered March 7–18, 2016 at a CIMPA (Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées) research school held at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina. This research school was dedicated to the founder of the Argentinian research group in representation theory, M.I. Platzeck. Chapter 3 thoroughly studies the IRS-aided SWIPT for achieving better R-E trade-off, wherein two different designs based on weighted sum-power maximization at energy users (EUs) and under individual quality-of-service (QoS), requirements at both information users (IUs) and EUs are investigated. Chapter 4 presents three paradigms of IRS-aided WPCN, i.e., IRS-aided half-duplex (HD) WPCN, IRS-aided full-duplex (FD) WCPN and IRS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) FD WPCN. The authors present some related emerging topics, e.g., active IRS aided wireless communications and IRS-aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications in chapter 5.
