The Uncertain Future of American Public Higher Education - Daniel M. Johnson - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Disaster in the Boardroom - Gerry Brown - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Disaster in the Boardroom - Gerry Brown - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Why when companies come crashing down, do we hear of boards who have failed in their fiduciary duties? Or that they have been ignorant, complacent or downright complicit in these scandals and downfalls? Of course, corporate scandals are nothing new, nor are they limited to any one geography. They are a damning indictment of our systems of corporate governance around the world. And yet, despite this frequency, little or nothing changes. We shrug and move on, accepting they are an unavoidable part of the system that produces incredible wealth for economies and societies. But it should not be that way. Disaster in the Boardroom shows how boards can be better. Looking at why these scandals happen, authors Peterson and Brown present in-depth case studies of major global corporations - including recent contemporary scandals associated with companies such as BP, Facebook and Uber - using the optic of their unique, original and compelling ''six dysfunctions of the board'' analysis to reveal their particularities but also how they can be overcome. In this book, Brown and Peterson explore common attributes of scandals such as lack of independence from management, missing key voices, cultural amplification, diffusion of responsibility, rule-bound cultures and groupthink. They also identify ways to strengthen boards, improve their culture and competence, and give directors and others the power to take action and ultimately prevent disasters from happening. Disaster in the Boardroom is essential reading for every executive in every boardroom, those aspiring to board positions as well as anyone interested in why boards fail. It has never been more important to pre-identify and eradicate these boardroom dysfunctions - not least so that their impacts upon society can better seen, understood, mitigated, and avoided.

Creation, Translation, and Adaptation in Donald Duck Comics - Peter Cullen Bryan - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Creation, Translation, and Adaptation in Donald Duck Comics - Peter Cullen Bryan - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book examines the scope and nature of Donald Duck and his family''s popularity in Germany, in contrast to the diminished role they play in America. This is achieved through examination of the respective fan communities, business practices, and universality of the characters. This work locates and understands the aspects of translation and adaptation that inform the spread of culture that have as yet been underexplored in the context of comic books. It represents a large-scale attempt to incorporate adaptation and translation studies into comics studies, through a lens of fan studies (used to examine both the American and German fan communities, as well as the work of Don Rosa). This work builds on the efforts of other scholars, including Janet Wasko and Illaria Meloni, while expanding the historical understanding of what might be the world''s best-selling comics. Peter Cullen Bryan is Lecturer at Pennsylvania State University, USA. His areas of study include American Studies, Intercultural Communications, and 21st Century American culture, emphasizing comic art and fan communities. His research has appeared in the Journal of Fandom Studies, The Journal of American Culture , and Popular Culture Studies Journal . He serves on the boards of the Mid-Atlantic Popular Culture Association and the Popular Culture Association, as well as Secretary for the Intercultural Communication section of the International Communication Association.

The Value Killers - Nuno Fernandes - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The Value Killers - Nuno Fernandes - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

In a business climate marked by escalating global competition and industry disruption, successful mergers and acquisitions are increasingly vital to the growth and profitability of many corporations. If history is any guide, 60 to 70 per cent of new mergers will fail – and will destroy shareholder value. To date, analyses of the M&A failure rate tend to focus on individual causes – e.g., culture clashes, valuation methods, or CEO overconfidence – rather than examining the problem holistically. The Value Killers is the first book based on a holistic analysis of successful and unsuccessful transactions. Based on research, interviews with top executives, and case studies, this book identifies the key causes of failures and successes and offers prescriptions to increase the odds that future transactions will deliver all the anticipated synergies.  The Value Killers offers practical advice in the form of 5 Golden Rules. These rules will help managers and boards to ensure that target companies are properly valued; potential synergies and risks are identified in advance; checks and balances are installed to make sure that the pros and cons of the transaction are rationally and objectively evaluated; mechanisms are created that will trigger termination of bad deals; and obstacles to successful post-merger integrations are assessed (and solutions developed) before the deal closes. Each chapter includes questions for executives considering future M&As to allow them to see whether they are on the right track or not.

FPGA-BASED Hardware Accelerators - Valery Sklyarov - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

FPGA-BASED Hardware Accelerators - Valery Sklyarov - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book suggests and describes a number of fast parallel circuits for data/vector processing using FPGA-based hardware accelerators. Three primary areas are covered: searching, sorting, and counting in combinational and iterative networks. These include the application of traditional structures that rely on comparators/swappers as well as alternative networks with a variety of core elements such as adders, logical gates, and look-up tables. The iterative technique discussed in the book enables the sequential reuse of relatively large combinational blocks that execute many parallel operations with small propagation delays. For each type of network discussed, the main focus is on the step-by-step development of the architectures proposed from initial concepts to synthesizable hardware description language specifications. Each type of network is taken through several stages, including modeling the desired functionality in software, the retrieval and automatic conversion of key functions, leading to specifications for optimized hardware modules. The resulting specifications are then synthesized, implemented, and tested in FPGAs using commercial design environments and prototyping boards. The methods proposed can be used in a range of data processing applications, including traditional sorting, the extraction of maximum and minimum subsets from large data sets, communication-time data processing, finding frequently occurring items in a set, and Hamming weight/distance counters/comparators. The book is intended to be a valuable support material for university and industrial engineering courses that involve FPGA-based circuit and system design.

The Trustee Governance Guide - Christopher K. Merker - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The Trustee Governance Guide - Christopher K. Merker - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

More than 80% of the financial assets in the United States fall under the purview of a trustee. That''s a big responsibility for an estimated 1% (around 1.5 million people) of the U.S. working population charged with overseeing investments for millions and millions of beneficiaries, public sector, and non-profit organizations. In a world proliferated by investment products, increasingly dominated by indexes, faced—particularly in the pension world—with increasing liabilities, more regulation, and a growing number of social and sustainability objectives, what''s a trustee to do? The Trustee Governance Guide is here to help guide today’s board trustee through the brave new world of 21st century investing. The book focuses on the critical aspects of the Five Imperatives: Governance, Knowledge, Diversification, Discipline, and Impact. Based on more than a decade of research, practice, and discussions with many key decision makers and influencers across the industry, this book addresses the many topics related to better governance, greater mission-driven financial performance, and impact. The questions the book addresses include: · What is good governance, how do we know it when we see it, and why does it matter? · How much knowledge is necessary to be a competent board member? · How big should my endowment be? · What are the key elements of a diversified portfolio? · How much does cost matter? · What''s the difference between socially responsible and ESG investing? · Can I focus on sustainability and still be a good fiduciary? This book provides a way for boards to improve and benchmark their own governance performance alongside their peers, and uniquely covers related investment topics in each chapter.

The CISO’s Transformation - Raj Badhwar - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The CISO’s Transformation - Raj Badhwar - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The first section of this book addresses the evolution of CISO (chief information security officer) leadership, with the most mature CISOs combining strong business and technical leadership skills. CISOs can now add significant value when they possess an advanced understanding of cutting-edge security technologies to address the risks from the nearly universal operational dependence of enterprises on the cloud, the Internet, hybrid networks, and third-party technologies demonstrated in this book. In our new cyber threat-saturated world, CISOs have begun to show their market value. Wall Street is more likely to reward companies with good cybersecurity track records with higher stock valuations. To ensure that security is always a foremost concern in business decisions, CISOs should have a seat on corporate boards, and CISOs should be involved from beginning to end in the process of adopting enterprise technologies. The second and third sections of this book focus on building strong security teams, and exercising prudence in cybersecurity. CISOs can foster cultures of respect through careful consideration of the biases inherent in the socio-linguistic frameworks shaping our workplace language and through the cultivation of cyber exceptionalism. CISOs should leave no stone unturned in seeking out people with unique abilities, skills, and experience, and encourage career planning and development, in order to build and retain a strong talent pool. The lessons of the breach of physical security at the US Capitol, the hack back trend, and CISO legal liability stemming from network and data breaches all reveal the importance of good judgment and the necessity of taking proactive stances on preventative measures. This book will target security and IT engineers, administrators and developers, CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and CFOs. Risk personnel, CROs, IT, security auditors and security researchers will also find this book useful.
