The Microbiome in Respiratory Disease - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

The Microbiome in Respiratory Disease - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book comprehensively covers the microbiome in respiratory disease, from the initial research study to the disease-specific implications and related applications. Research on the respiratory microbiome is increasing in volume and scope. This reflects rapidly growing interest in the study of respiratory disease to understand how microbiota shape mechanisms of disease pathogenesis. The respiratory tract spans the nasal passages, sinus cavities, oropharynx, and the tracheobronchial tree of the lungs. In these compartments of the upper and lower respiratory tract, the microbiota have now been studied in the context of several chronic respiratory conditions. These include chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis, to name a few. The potential impact of ecological interactions (i.e., between microbes and between microbiota and host) within and across respiratory compartments is increasingly recognized. The book is organized into two main sections. Part I, Principles and Tools, covers conceptual modeling of the respiratory microbiome, experimental methodology with a focus on a priori considerations in study design and sampling, laboratory and computational methods for analysis of respiratory microbiome data, and minimizing interpretive pitfalls. Part II, Applications, discusses the evidence from specific studies that have shed novel insights into the influence of respiratory microbiota on mechanisms or outcomes in specific diseases. Based on current best evidence, disease-specific chapters include chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma (pediatric and adult studies), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), bronchiectasis not due to CF, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and lung transplant. This is an ideal reference for forward-thinking practitioners with interest in novel developments in precision medicine applications in lung disease, as well as translational scientists in the field of microbiology, immunology and lung biology.

The Gastro-Archeologist - Jeremy Woodward - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

In order to understand common conditions such as coeliac disease and Crohn''s disease, one must view the gut in its evolutionary context. This is the novel approach to the gut and its diseases that is adopted in this book. The first part tells the story of the evolution of the gut itself - why it came about and how it has influenced the evolution of animals ever since. The second part focuses on the evolution of immunity and how the layers of immune mechanisms are retained in the gut, resembling the strata revealed in an archeological dig. The final part, ''The Gastro-Archeologist'' , ties the first two together and highlights how understanding the gut and immune system in their evolutionary context can help us understand diseases affecting them. Ambitious in its scope but telling a unique story from a refreshingly novel perspective, the book offers an informative and enjoyable read. As the story of the gut, immunity and disease unfolds, the author aims to endow readers with the same sense of awe and excitement that the subject evokes in him. Difficult concepts are illustrated using simple and colourful analogies, and the main content is supplemented with anecdotes and unusual and amusing facts throughout the book. The book is intended for anyone with an interest in the gut, its immunity and diseases, ranging from school and college biology and biomedical students, to professionals working in the field, and to patients suffering from intestinal diseases who want to understand more about their conditions.

The Radiology Survival Kit - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This textbook provides a basic introduction to radiology and imaging along with the minimum required knowledge written from a practical clinical perspective. Presenting essential definitions and critical images, this textbook offers key references in a welcomed concise format, targeting medical students and interns undertaking the USMLE and house staff of any specialty desiring a resource for practical and useful information relevant to and including medical imaging of common diseases and conditions. Organized by signs, symptoms, history, disease, imaging and imaging findings, and clinical service/specialty, this textbook thoughtfully addresses the early challenges faced by medical students and interns preparing for their beginning rotation or internship. Allowing readers to bypass dense radiology books too cluttered with detail, organized by body part instead of clinical relevance, or not inclusive of the latest developments and technologies, this textbook prepares students and house staff to enter and to succeed in this most rapidly evolving field in medicine. The Radiology Survival Kit: What You Need to Know for USMLE and the Clinics is a practical, clinically-oriented textbook offering an early career perspective intended for first through fourth year medical students and house staff, including interns and residents from any discipline, as well as radiology and radiography students and technologists, radiology and ICU nurses, nursing students, radiology administrators, and foreign medical graduates.

Mastering Modern Psychological Testing - Cecil R. Reynolds - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Mastering Modern Psychological Testing - Cecil R. Reynolds - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book provides a comprehensive introduction to psychological assessment and covers areas not typically addressed in existing test and measurements texts, such as neuropsychological assessment and the use of tests in forensics settings. The book introduces the vocabulary of the profession and the most basic mathematics of testing early as being fundamental to understanding the field. Numerous examples are drawn from tests that the authors have written or otherwise helped to develop, reflecting the authors'' deep understanding of these tests and their familiarity with problems encountered in test development, use, and interpretation. Following the introduction of the basic areas of psychometrics, the book moves to areas of testing that represent various approaches to measuring different psychological constructs (memory, language, executive function, etc.), with emphasis on the complex issue of cultural bias in testing. Examples of existing tests are given throughout the book; however, this book is not designed to prepare students to go out and administer, score, and interpret specific psychological tests. Rather, the purpose of this book is to provide the foundational core of knowledge about tests, measurement, and assessment constructs, issues, and quantitative tools. - Explains what constitutes a psychological test, how tests are developed, how they are best used, and how to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses; - Describes areas of testing that represent different approaches to measuring different psychological constructs; - Explains applications of psychological testing to issues in the courts; - Addresses how test authors and publishers design and research tests to address the difficult and demanding issues of cultural differences in test performance and interpretation of test results.
