Sustainable Watershed Development - Chaitanya Baliram Pande - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book presents a case study on a semi-arid region, Maharashtra State, India, and discusses problems concerning a broad range of areas: sustainable watershed development; watershed management; groundwater condition; land and resource development plans; thematic maps on e.g. land use, soil types and soil erosion; groundwater recharge site selection; remote sensing and GIS; and soil and water conservation structures. The book''s focus is on creating a land and water resource development plan and environmental management for groundwater recharge development using remote sensing and GIS technology in the case study region, which is situated in the Akola and Buldhana districts of Maharashtra. Its goal is to promote awareness for sustainable watershed development and planning in semi-arid regions by highlighting the problems of, and plans for, groundwater and surface water pollution and sustainable watershed development. These aspects are of great importance to watershed and natural resources planning and management, and need to be exploited and managed sustainably. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to all scientists, research scholars and graduate students of remote sensing, hydrology, hydrogeology, water resource engineering, agricultural engineering and related areas who want to acquire detailed information on watershed planning and sustainable water resource planning in semi-arid regions, or to find new methodologies and techniques for studying the feedback mechanisms between forms and processes.

Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This edited volume addresses the impacts of climate change on Pacific islands, and presents databases and indexes for assessing and adapting to island vulnerabilities. By analyzing susceptibility variables, developing comprehensive vulnerability indexes, and applying GIS techniques, the book''s authors demonstrate the particular issues presented by climate change in the islands of the Pacific region, and how these issues may be managed to preserve and improve biodiversity and human livelihoods. The book first introduces the issues specific to island communities, such as high emissions impacts, and discusses the importance of the lithological traits of Pacific islands and how these physical factors relate to climate change impacts. From here, the book aims to analyze the various vulnerabilities of different island sectors, and to formulate a susceptibility index from these variables to be used by government and planning agencies for relief prioritization. Such variables include tropical cyclones, built infrastructures, proximity to coastal areas, agriculture, fisheries and marine resources, groundwater availability, biodiversity, and economic impacts on industries such as tourism. Through the categorization and indexing of these variables, human and physical adaptation measures are proposed, and support solutions are offered to aid the inhabitants of affected island countries. This book is intended for policy makers, academics, and climate change researchers, particularly those dealing with climate change impacts on small islands.

Tourism in the Kyrgyz Republic - Gulnura Issanova - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Tourism in the Kyrgyz Republic - Gulnura Issanova - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book aims to identify the impact of tourism on social and economic development in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, and to predict the development of the tourism industry and identify any limiting factors for the development of the tourism industry in the Republic as a whole. The impacts of tourism on the region have been poorly understood since the country gained independence in 1991, and so improved methods for identifying and increasing the contribution of the tourism industry to the economic and social development of the region are needed. The book assesses the impact of tourism on the socio-economic situation in the Issyk-Kul region is assessed on the basis of statistical modelling and GIS mapping, provides a comparative analysis of the categories and types of tourism in the regions of the Republic, in particular in the Issyk-Kul region, and identifies factors that have a negative impact on the country''s tourism potential, as well as the shortcomings and prospects for future development. The book''s primary audience will be scholars and researchers whose research focuses on the socio-economic impacts of tourism, as well as students and planners. It is expected that it will become a source of information and inspiration for all readers who feel responsible for initiating sustainable development and sustainable use of tourism resources in Kyrgyzstan and other countries.

Carbon Sequestration of Terrestrial Vegetation in China - Malin Song - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Carbon Sequestration of Terrestrial Vegetation in China - Malin Song - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book estimates terrestrial vegetation carbon sequestration data based on remote sensing satellite data, collects the temporal and spatial characteristics of carbon sequestration by vegetation at county level and grid scale in China, and predicts the future change of carbon sequestration by vegetation in China. Based on the major strategic development goals and specific practices of China''s carbon neutrality, this book shifts the research perspective from the side of carbon reduction to the weaker side of carbon sequestration. It not only broadens and enriches the research boundaries and theoretical connotation in the field of carbon neutrality, but also provides a perspective reference for further research on carbon sequestration by vegetation, which has pioneering academic value for future research on carbon dioxide. The satellite data is collected to calculate China''s long time series and multi-type district and county vegetation carbon sequestration data set, which can meet different research needs and application scenarios. The practical value lies in providing basic data for the research of carbon neutrality, the establishment of carbon trading market and the calculation of vegetation carbon sink, and providing an important reference index for evaluating the ecological and environmental effects of land change. This book combines remote sensing technology, Geographic Information Science (GIS), spatial visualization technology and index decomposition technology to measure vegetation carbon sequestration in counties and districts of China, reveals the spatial-temporal dynamic change process of vegetation carbon sequestration, and explores the driving influence of social factors.

Simulating Transitions to Agriculture in Prehistory - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

Simulating Transitions to Agriculture in Prehistory - - Bog - Springer Nature Switzerland AG - Plusbog.dk

This book highlights new and innovative approaches to archaeological research using computational modeling while focusing on the Neolithic transition around the world. The transformative effect of the spread and adoption of agriculture in prehistory cannot be overstated. Consequently, archaeologists have often focused their research on this transition, hoping to understand both the ecological causes and impacts of this shift, as well as the social motivations and constraints involved. Given the complex interplay of socio-ecological factors, the answers to these types of questions cannot be found using traditional archaeological methods alone. Computational modeling techniques have emerged as an effective approach for better understanding prehistoric data sets and the linkages between social and ecological factors at play during periods of subsistence change. Such techniques include agent-based modeling, Bayesian modeling, GIS modeling of the prehistoric environment, and the modeling of small-scale agriculture. As more archaeological data sets aggregate regarding the transition to agriculture, researchers are often left with few ways to relate these sets to one another. Computational modeling techniques such as those described above represent a critical next step in providing archaeological analyses that are important for understanding human prehistory around the world. Given its scope, this book will appeal to the many interdisciplinary scientists and researchers whose work involves archaeology and computational social science. Chapter "The Spread of Agriculture: Quantitative Laws in Prehistory?" is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via springer.com.
