Bleak Forest

Bleak Forest

Bleak Forest is a piece for smaller concert bands and offers the musicians above all space to improve their sound and their effect playing. The technical requirements are therefore deliberately kept low. With this piece, the composer won the VLAMO International Composition Contest 2022. Thematically, the work is influenced by the composer's childhood memories. In his hometown there was a dark and mysterious forest, that seemed to the children in the small village to be magical. Without a reasonable explanation, every trip into the woods was exciting and somewhat terrifying. There were tales of dangerous animals, which can be heard at the beginning of the piece, as well as magical beasts. The magic of the forest is depicted musically from bar 70 in the andante section. The snapping of the fingers represents single raindrops. From bar 99 onwards, we hear the trek home, with the occasional moments of trepidation as the children spook each other with their fanciful tales. In the end, though, we arrive safely at home because after all, magical beasts only exist in fairy tales… don’t they? Andreas Ziegelbäck studied music education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and history at the Paris Lodron Universität, Salzburg. In addition to his studies, he trained in ensemble conducting for wind orchestra with conductor and composer Thomas Doss. It was Doss who sparked Ziegelbäck’s interest in composing. In 2021, Andreas Ziegelbäck completed his composition studies with Johannes Maria Staud. In 2020, he took part in a brass band composition masterclass in Bern with Oliver Waespi, followed by a premiere by the Swiss Army Brass Band.

The Juvavum Fanfare was composed for the closing concert of the first part-time University course in Wind Orchestra Conducting at the renowned Mozarteum University Salzburg, which took place from 2019 to 2021 for the first time. This celebratory opening composition is dedicated to the esteemed course instructor and conductor, Martin Fuchsberger, as well as to all the graduates who successfully completed this program. The name of the fanfare, "Juvavum," derives from the ancient Roman name for Salzburg. This connection to Salzburg is not only evident in the premiere of the piece at the Mozarteum Salzburg but also in its musical depth. Thematically, the initial fanfare and subsequent lyrical section draw from the melody of Salzburg's regional anthem, "Land uns'rer Väter." The majestic fanfare echoes the opening intervals of this anthem. From bar 27 onward, a direct citation of the melodic theme can be heard. Both the fanfare motifs and the vocal lines of this anthem are eventually brought together in an exhilarating final section. The Juvavum Fanfare is ideally suited to ceremonially open concerts and provides an engaging experience for both listeners and musicians alike due to its appropriate length.

Composer Otto M. Schwarz completed his first Concerto for trumpet in October 2009. Schwarz displays a special knack in writing for this instrument, thanks to his trumpet studies undertaken with Professor Josef Pomberger at the Music Conservatory in Vienna. Concerto for Trumpet No. 1 ‚Trumpet Town’ was commissioned by the police-orchestra of Upper Austria, under the baton of Andreas Schwarzenlander. The work was premiered on 17 November 2009. The soloist for the evening was trumpeter Franz Wagnermeyer, who also studied at the Vienna Conservatory and who currently performs with, amongst others, the international group “Ten of the Best”. A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens Concerto for Trumpet No. 1 ‘Trumpet Town’. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet’s displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugel horn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. This piece is also available for trumpet and piano.

Side Paths

Side Paths

This symphonic wind orchestra piece is a homage to the painting "Main Path and Side Paths" by the painter and graphic artist Paul Ernst Klee. At the center of the painting runs a straight main path in vibrant colors, surrounded by irregular side paths that are nevertheless held in similar color tones. Just like in the painting, the piece repeats a short motif in various variations, while the surroundings of this motif constantly change, similar to the side paths in the painting. The color gradients and paths of the painting are considered an allegory of human life. Just as in our lives, ideas, goals, and desires constantly change, our path often leads through different routes. Even when we pursue a great goal, we usually reach it only through numerous detours and sometimes unexpected diversions. The piece carries a deep message of hope with a second theme: it encourages us to hold on to our dreams and pursue them with unwavering determination, even if the path is marked by unexpected turns and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. It is an ode to the youth around the world who are still at the beginning of their journey to realize their dreams. May it give them the strength and determination to continue their path undeterred even in the midst of the greatest challenges.
