If present trends in divorce and remarriage continue, the stepfamily will eventually outnumber all other types of family in the U.S. Three decades ago, one out of five children under the age of eighteen was living in stepfamilies, and there were at least two million households in which the children were related only by marriage (stepsiblings) or who shared only one parent in common (half-siblings). How are these new kinds of family relationships working out? In particular, how are children faring in these kinds of families? There are many books on the successes and difficulties of second marriages that involve children, but most of these look at problems from the perspective of one or both spouses. Popular literature in particular has emphasized the problem of the new spouse who "inherits a family," without really focusing on the relationships among stepsiblings. Strangers in the House focuses on the children of these marriages—both stepsiblings and half-siblings and the relationships among them and with their parents. It is a report on how they are faring, drawn from the results of original research by the author: case studies of stepfamilies, interviews with stepsiblings and half-siblings, a survey of members of the Stepfamily Association of America, and participation in three stepfamily self-help groups. The result is a vivid portrait of nontraditional family constellations that provides an overview of changes in American families, the increased divorce and remarriage rates, and how stepfamilies differ from other families. Beer identifies major problem areas in stepsibling relations and shows how youngsters are adapting to these special situations. He examines classic rivalries over love, attention, space, and property and shows how these are worked out within these special circumstances. The book concludes with an overview of the dynamics of sibling relations in these special families and analyzes how the stepsibling subsystem fits into the larger family structure. Beer shows that in many respects the problems of these families characterize changes in the social structure in postindustrial society.

It comes at a critical time, as debate rages over the merits of individual social security accounts. IDAs also respond to policy that is becoming more asset based and less inclusive of the poor. The authors argue for the efficacy of IDAs to counter this tendency. They find that while savings outcomes vary among participants, no characteristics (such as low income or public assistance) preclude saving. They examine effects of IDA design (the match rate, savings targets, and the use of automatic transfer) on savings results and analyze factors that influence varying rates of saving and spending over time. They conclude that financial education and other support services, though costly, improve savings performance. In recent years researchers have asserted that the once-salient distinctions between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals are quickly eroding. These converging outcomes represent a striking departure from past differences. Historically, not-for-profit hospitals were larger and treated a higher proportion of seriously ill patients than for-profit hospitals. Not-for-profit hospitals also had larger medical staffs and offered greater opportunities for medical training. Researchers have vigorously debated the implications of the fading distinction between for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals. As these researchers note, numerous communities support not-for-profit hospitals with tax-payer dollars, income and property-tax exclusions and tax-free financing and contributions. Many are concerend that not-for-profit hospitals will jettison community service in an attempt to reduce operating costs. Despite such important implications this literature is full of philosophical discussions, typically employing limited empirical data, limited time frames and limited consideration of the hospital environment. This limited consideration of environmental factors (i.e. policy, supply and demand) leaves an important question unanswered: How do environmental factors combine to produce the narrowing distinction between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals? Potter''s book examines the claims of a narrowing distinction between not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals by analyzing short-term general hospital outcomes in the 48 contiguous states over a fifteen-year period in conjunction with various environmental factors. In particular, this book analyzes the claims of a declining distinction between hospital types by focusing on both hospital efficiency and community service outcomes. It examines whether the efficiency and community service outcomes of not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals have converged, finding that hospital type was most significant in explaining the variance in hospital outcomes in the early 1980s than in the mid-1980s and early 1990s. The story is quite different when we examine community-service outcomes. In particular, Potter does not find evidence that hospitals are reducing their provision of community care in an effort to reduce expenses.
