Having fainted away on his daughter’s grave, he is transported in a dream vision to an earthy paradise where he sees his daughter across a stream, transfigured and clothed in garments set with pearls. She explains to him her exalted status as a bride of Christ and shows him a vision of the New Jerusalem. Ravished with his vision, he attempts to cross the stream to join his Pearl, only to be woken from his dream of paradise. This translation of the poem is accompanied by a preface on the translation, a reproduction of the poem in its original orthography, a transcription of the manuscript, a glossary, and instructions on how to read the manuscript hand.

This book sheds light on the early colonial period of Zimbabwe when many of the current land disputes originated. In particular, the book examines the Rudd Concession, the seminal southern African land and mineral agreement signed in 1888 by Cecil Rhodes and Lobengula, King of the Matabele. The Concession was not merely a land agreement, but also legal transfer of all political and economic control of the entire Matabele kingdom to Cecil Rhodes and the British. Why would Lobengula sign such a seemingly disastrous agreement? The question is fundamental to an examination of the Rudd Concession and to understand Zimbabwe''s fierce conflicts today. Moreover, this question underscores the historical nature of many post-colonial dilemmas throughout Africa. This book looks to understand from a late nineteenth century perspective why Rhodes sought the agreement, and more interestingly why Lobengula ever signed it. It also discusses the essential similarities between 19th century colonialism and African capitalism today, illustrating significant implications for contemporary relations between the developed and developing world.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the U.S. economy followed a boom-bust cycle that included four recessions, high inflation, two bouts of soaring energy prices and petroleum shortages, a stock market that lost half of its inflation-adjusted value, and rising interest rates that eventually peaked at levels not seen since the Civil War. This book explains how this economic mess came about. The story begins with Bill Phillips, the economist who discovered an inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment. This finding led U.S. policymakers to believe that they could permanently stimulate economic growth by raising inflation. Next, it describes the various price fixing schemes put in place which eventually caused serious market imbalances: the Bretton Woods system of fixed exchange rates, the Regulation Q deposit rate ceilings, the price ceilings on petroleum and natural gas, and Richard Nixon''s economy-wide price controls system. Also addressed is the role played by the heads of the Federal Reserve during these years. The book''s final chapters examine how the economic program instituted in 1981 by Ronald Reagan helped cause the severe 1981-1982 recession, but also laid the foundation for the major economic boom that followed.

Moreover, his theory of emotions can be related to current theories of the emotions, like Damasio''s somatic marker hypothesis and Griffiths'' distinction between basic and higher cognitive emotions. Reid''s theory of causation has central features in common with Price''s contemporary manipulability theory of causation. His rational principles of action seem to be rather out of date, yet, they can be made intelligible as part of a certain kind of protestant ethics. And Reid''s account of freedom of action one could claim that it is common sense, which had its resurrection in Moore''s philosophy.
