This work resulted from a conference held in 2003 that was jointly sponsored by the Rockefeller Archive Center and Quinnipiac University. Drawing upon perspectives from history, philosophy, and the social sciences, as well as public health and medicine, the authors in this volume examine and critique the role of Foundations, most prominently the Rockefeller Foundation, in promoting and expanding the development of Western medicine around the world during the 20th century. The first half of the book examines the historical involvement of philanthropic foundations in public heath, basic medical research, and related social and political issues. These studies range from an examination of the Rockefeller''s Foundation''s anti-malaria campaigns to the involvement of Foundations in promoting eugenic ideology and population control. The second half of the book considers current situations in which philanthropic foundations are active in promoting public health and westernized medicine, including consideration of the fight against AIDS in Africa, the resurgence of tuberculosis as a major public health threat, and the ongoing war against malaria. Finally, the book concludes with thoughts on the future of health, disease, and public health by Peter C. Goldmark, Jr., a former president of the Rockefeller Foundation. By considering issues of public health and health policy from a wide range of perspectives, this book seeks to contribute both to our understanding of the past successes and failures of growing dominance of Westernized medicine over global health, and to consider present and future possibilities for improving the delivery of health services to the population of the world.

Rural Australia has faced many economic and demographic disadvantages. Advances in medical technology and economic reforms have led to the closure or near closure of many rural hospitals. Since the late 1980s, the Australian government has increased their focus on the quality and functionality of rural health. Most notable was the development of a rural health strategy and the introduction of flexibly funded, integrated health services, otherwise known as Multipurpose Services (MPS). Healthcare Reform and Interests Groups explores the resistance that the MPSs encountered from rural health professionals and rural communities in Australia. The MPS program in Victoria provided an opportunity to review the response of structural interest groups when the status quo is challenged. Healthcare Reform and Interest Groups analyzes the development of the MPS program in Victoria, in particular the processes and outcomes associated with the development of an MPS in Corryong, a small town in Victoria. The study led to the testing of findings in other Victorian communities. The goal of the study was to understand why the Victorian MPS program, developed to help improve the distribution of rural health services, was met with such resistance. Fieldwork has been combined with archival research conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Nigeria to explicate the manner in which the Sudan United Mission strove to create a Christian Northern Nigerian identity in order to combat a Muslim Hausa identity. To accomplish this transformation, the missionaries created a home for freed Nigerian slaves; it was named after Lucy Guinness Kumm, one of its founders. The story of the home and its use takes place in the midst of Lord Lugard''s colonial ideal of indirect rule and the working misunderstanding in which local rulers presumably conducted local affairs in an independent manner free from direction from the colonial government. The reality was much different and each of the participants chose to ''misunderstand'' the actions, motives, and histories of the others. These included indigenous Muslim rulers, so-called ''pagans,'' colonial officials, and missionaries. In the midst of numerous intrigues, the Sudan United Mission took care of over 200 freed slave children and initiated significant educational reforms. The depiction of a plural society and its expatriates is a major contribution. The book has value for studies in education, colonial history, and cultural anthropology.
