The principle of tolerance is one of the most enduring legacies of the Enlightenment. However, scholarly works on the topic to date have been primarily limited to traditional studies based on a historical, ''progressive'' view or to the critiques of contemporary writers such as Adorno, Horkheimer, Foucault, and MacIntyre, who believed that the core beliefs of the Enlightenment, including tolerance, could actually be used as vehicles of repression and control rather than as agents promoting individual and group freedom.This collection of original essays by a distinguished international group of contributors looks at the subject in a new light and from a number of angles, focusing on the concept of tolerance at the point where the individual, or group, converges or clashes with the state. The volume opens with introductory essays that provide essential background to the major shift in thinking in regard to tolerance that occurred during the eighteenth century, while considering the general problem of writing a history of tolerance. The remaining essays, organized around two central themes, trace the expansion of the discourses of tolerance and intolerance. The first group treats tolerance and intolerance in relation to the spheres of religious and political thought and practice. The second examines the extension of broad issues of tolerance and intolerance in the realms of race, gender, deviancy, and criminality. While offering an in-depth consideration of these complex issues in the context of the Enlightenment, the volume sheds light on many similar challenges facing contemporary society.

Religious intolerance is very old and widespread – a phenomenon of a highly distinctive nature which defies reduction to a simpler kind of vice. Methods of achieving religious tolerance have long been in dispute because there is much confusion about its nature. In this book, Professor Newman attempts to clarify the concept of religious tolerance in a way that other recent philosophical studies have clarified such concepts as justice, freedom, and equality. While there is a great deal of literature on theological, psychological, sociological, and political aspects of the problem, little has been said about the more fundamental ethical and epistemological issues that arise from philosophical reflection on religious competition and conflict. Newman addresses such questions as: How does religious intolerance differ from religious prejudice? Does being tolerant require commitment to relativism, pluralism, secularism, or universalism? Can a State live up to its promise to allow its citizens freedom of religion? Is intolerance a vice or a deep-rooted psychosis? Is it an inevitable by-product of education socialization? In shedding light on these and related problems, offering tentative solutions, and drawing on the writings of such philosophers as Aristotle, Aquinas, Spinoza, and Hume and such modern thinkers as Gordon Allport, Ronald Knox, and Walter Lippmann, Foundations of Religious Tolerance will assist clergymen, scholars, and laymen in their attempts to promote social harmony and mutual understanding among people of different faiths. This book will be especially useful in university courses and other programs in religious studies, philosophy, psychology, and sociology of religion, or that deal with prejudice and discrimination.

The unexpected global rise of intolerant nationalism at the end of the twentieth century has received much attention, and yet intolerance also manifests itself in more subtle ways, even in nations such as Canada, with its mythologized history of tolerance and its official policies of multiculturalism. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews with white Canadians and government bureaucrats, as well as an in-depth analysis of national identity and its construction, Mackey explores ideas of racial and cultural difference, multiculturalism, and pluralism. She argues that official policies and attitudes of multicultural ''tolerance'' for ''others'' reinforce the dominant Anglo-Canadian culture by abducting the cultures of minority groups, pressing them into the service of nation-building without promoting genuine respect or autonomy. The book also contributes to an understanding of how official ''multicultural tolerance'' has contributed to the rise of the new right in recent years. Mapping the contradictions and ambiguities in the cultural politics of Canadian identity, The House of Difference opens up new understandings of the operations of ''tolerance'' and western liberalism in a supposedly post-colonial era.

In 1938, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) sent communist union organizer Arthur "Slim" Evans to the smelter city of Trail, British Columbia, to establish Local 480 of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers. The book was reprinted with an afterword by Gwendolyn Davies, Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice-President (Research) at the University of New Brunswick.UTP had been selling around 200 copies of the book per year, until Donna Morrissey selected it for the Canada Reads debates.
