The texts presented here were discovered by a German expedition to Ashur, capital of the Assyrians, more than half a century ago. They have remained in Istanbul, largely uncatalogued and unedited, until this publication, the first in a series to be prepared under the auspices of the Royal Inscriptions of Mesopotamia Project. The inscriptions speak of the building by the kings of palaces and temples in various parts of Assyria, of the god who were invoked to bless the enterprises, and at times of military campaigns and victories. Transliterations, commentaries, notes, and hand-copies for the indiviaul texts are provided along with the requisite indexes to make the volume a basic research tool for assyriologists.

THE FIVE TERRACOTI''A BOWLS which are the subject of this study are commonplace in appearance, their only distinction being that each has on its inside surface (and in one case on the outside as well) a spiral inscription in a dialect of Aramaic. The inscriptions are in fact magical texts designed to throw a protective spell over the persons for whom they were written. Bowls of this type have been found in Mesopotamia in considerable numbers during the past century, and have reached the Western world either through dealers or through archaeologists. The five texts before us add in various ways to the lore of the Mesopotamian incantation bowls, and in particular the three Mandaean ones make a modest contribution to the known vocabulary of Mandaic.

The Abbé H.R. Casgrain (1831-1904) was an important French-Canadian historian, biographer, and literary figure. He edited the papers of Maréchal de Lévis, and was the biographer of Mère Marie de l''Incarnation. In addition, he was the author of verse and literary criticism. He was a charter member of the Royal Society of Canada, and President in 1889. Wolfe and Montcalm first appeared in the famous Makers of Canada Series in 1905, and was revised by A.G. Doughty in 1926 in the light of new documentary material which had become available. This is the first time this study has been published separately.

Thoughtful people everywhere, but particularly in North America, are disturbed by the increasing number and seriousness of the problems associated with water resources. The Royal Society of Canada, impressed by the gravity of this situation, and by the multi-disciplinary nature of the specialized knowledge needed to cope with it, chose Water Resources as the main theme for its 1966 annual meeting. The topic has been broadly interpreted here: most of the papers were presented by the Science Section of the Society but contributions from all its Sections are included, covering political, historical and sociological aspects of the problem in addition to the physical, biological and even mathematical aspects. The contents comprise twenty-three essays, grouped into six parts under self-explanatory headings—"Pros and Cons of Canadian Water Export"; "Water, an Indispensable Resource"; "The St. Lawrence, Then and Now"; "The Great Lakes: Unique Features and Peculiar Problems"; "Physico-Mathematical Studies of Water"; and "The Biological Necessities and Hazards of Water." The contributors to this volume include Senator Frank E. Moss, the late General A.G.L. McNaughton, Pierre Camu, Hilda Neatby, Benoit Brouillette, A.D. Misener, and F.R. Hayes. This work is authoritative without being highly technical. It can be read profitably by all scientists and health workers professionally involved in the conservation of water resources everywhere. In addition, the non-scientific citizen can find much in this book that is enlightening and impressive about this inescapable and vital problem. (Royal Society of Canada Studia Varia Series No. 11)
