Pyracantha Soleil d'Or Pyracantha Golden Sun Evergreen Shrub

Pyracantha Soleil d'Or Pyracantha Golden Sun Evergreen Shrub

Pyracantha Soleil d'Or (Golden Sun) is an evergreen ornamental thorny bush with large clusters of golden berries in winter that follow a cloud of white springtime flowers. It’s perfect for pollinators and if it’s grown against a wall effectively deters cats and intruders.Pyracantha is native to a large area stretching from southwest Europe to Southeast Asia. The name pyracantha comes from the Greek ‘pyr’ for fire and ‘akanthos’ for thorn making it the ‘firethorn’ a very apt name given the toughness of its reddish thorny branches. Pyracantha are related to Cotoneaster but easily distinguished by their thorny branches and toothed leaves. The variety Soleil d’Or is a sport of Moretti and was introduced in 1970. Soleil d’Or means Golden Sun in reference to its huge clusters of wintertime golden berries that each measure 1 cm in diameter which is very large for a pyracantha.  Clusters of tiny white flowers appear in spring amid a dense covering of small glossy green leaves. The tiny flowers are lightly scented and attractive to pollinators hence Pyracantha Golden Sun has been awarded the RHS Perfect for Pollinators badge.Overall, it’s a more upright variety and medium-sized compared to some pyracanthas so it’s a suitable choice for compact gardens.Height and Spread of Pyracantha Soleil d'OrPyracantha Golden Sun is a medium-sized upright spreading shrub that reaches 3-4 metres and spreads over 2.5 metres. How Hardy Is Pyracantha Soleil d'OrThis is a very hardy shrub if its roots are well-drained. It tolerates sub-zero winters and drought once established. It copes well with pollution and exposed sites too.How To Use Pyracantha Soleil d'OrPyracantha Golden Sun is often used as a deterrent due to its thorny spines. It creates a cost-effective impenetrable hedge and covers a fence line with thick defensive greenery to deter cats or intruders from your property. It’s also a beautiful multicoloured bush throughout the year. In spring, masses of tiny white flowers attract pollinators and in winter its bright golden berries bring a hit of colour to dreary outdoor spaces until blackbirds eat them. This is a tough, low maintenance evergreen that brings security, colour, and privacy to all types of outdoor spaces and welcomes in beneficial wildlife. How To Care for Pyracantha Soleil d'OrPyracantha Golden Sun is easy to grow and requires barely any maintenance. It grows in exposed and sheltered locations but prefers full sun and will develop more berries in a sunny spot. That said, it is hardy and will grow strongly in partial shade too.It tolerates all types of soil including sand and clay soil if it’s free draining enough to prevent its roots from rotting. Flowers are produced on last year’s growth, so prune it after the flowers have finished, aiming to keep the two-year-old wood and remove 20% of older wood. Be sure to wear thick gloves with arm protection as its thorns are very sharp.

Corylus Hallesche Riesen Hazelnut Hallesche Reisen Tree

Corylus Hallesche Riesen Hazelnut Hallesche Reisen Tree

Corylus Hallesche Riesen or Hazelnut Hallesche ReisenThe hazelnut is the oldest nut variety used in Europe. The Corylus Avellana Hallesche Riesen originated in the Halle region of Germany during the late 1700s. The nut tree quickly won acclaim for its ample yield and superb flavour. The hazelnuts are quite large and provide a sweet, bold taste. Each nut measures about 4 centimeters and are round in shape. The nuts are typically ready for harvest during mid-September. The robust hazelnuts of the Corylus Hallesche Riesen can easily be stored in a dry place and last throughout the winter months. Their ability to store well made them a highly coveted food staple throughout ancient Europe, especially during the often cold, long, bleak winters. The Hazel Nut Hallesche Reisen is a hardy, strong growing deciduous hazel tree. When fully grown it will reach a height of 7 metres. Its leaves are bright green with slightly bluish margins. The leaves are egg-shaped and measure 6 to 10 centimeters long. During the autumn, the foliage turns a brilliant yellow hue that instantly attracts admiration. Unlike most hazels, the Corylus Hallesche Riesen blooms later in the season so is less susceptible to any unexpected late spring frosts. Catkins and flowers typically appear from March to April. The male catkins are golden and exceptionally showy. The female catkins are very small and reddish. The male Hallesche Riesen variety produces ample pollen which makes it well suited for pollinating bushes of natural stock. In order to produce a nut crop, a pollinator must be provided because the hazel is not self-pollinating. To ensure an ample yield, it is suggested that you plant at least two hazel trees of any variety within close proximity of each other because they depend on the wind for pollination. Ideally, space them about 4 metres apart. The Corylus Hallesche Riesen is very hardy and can withstand cold and wet conditions. It features a strong, upright growth habit. Plant in a full sun area or partial shade location. It tolerates most soil conditions but grows best in a planting site that contains ample organic content. Consider growing the hazel tree as a dense hedgerow. Hazelnuts are a valuable food source for woodland creatures and the tree’s dense growth provides optimal shelter for wildlife and songbirds. The Hallesche Reisen trees are relatively easy to grow and don’t take up an enormous amount of space so they are perfect for even small cottage gardens.

Rose Snow Princess. Rose Climbing Snow Princess for Sale UK

Rose Snow Princess is a floribunda climbing rose that’s smothered with bright white flowers from early summer to late autumn. They are lightly fragrant with a traditional rose scent, but they’re not overpowering. How Hardy Is Rose Climbing Snow Princess?Rose Snow Princess is hardy in all areas of the UK. Its flowers are particularly valued by rose enthusiasts because they don’t spoil in rain, and they tend to stay on the flower head during windier conditions. How To Use Rose Snow PrincessFloribunda roses have many heads of flowers that bloom in groups at the end of each stem. It offers protection against unwanted cats but attracts pollinators such as bees and ladybirds. If you don’t have a suitable wall or fence Snow Princess will grow happily up an obelisk in the middle of a larger flower border or in a container. If you do this in early spring it will boast bloom production and the overall health of your plant. Prune Snow Princess in autumn or early spring before new growth has started to form. Cut back around a third of the old growth to stimulate fresh, healthy new stems. Roses flower on the new year’s growth so don’t worry about ruining display, Snow Princess responds well to pruning. Cut out any dead wood or crossing stems too as this allows light and air to circulate.Rose Climbing Snow Princess is perfect for that tricky mid-height level. Corylus Webbs Prize Cob or Webbs Prize Cobnut Trees Buy UK

Corylus Webbs Prize Cob or Webbs Prize Cobnut Trees Buy UK

Corylus Webb's Prize Cobb or Cobnut Tree Webb's PrizeCobnut Tree Webb's Prize is new cultivated variety of common hazel, best known for its compact size and weeping habit. This cultivar is often grown for its abundant nut crops and attractive looks. As with other members of the Hazel family (Corylus Avellana), Webb's Prize Cobb is partially self-fertile. In the spring, the tree produces showy catkins (male) that pollinate the inconspicuous flowers (female). The shiny, green leaves turn to beautiful shade of golden yellow in the autumn. The attractive autumn colour of the foliage is complemented by masses of red berries that stay on the tree through winter months. The nuts on established trees ripen around September, and are similar in taste and shape to those produced by Corylus maxima (Filibert) but with heavier production.Easy to grow and care for, Corylus Webb's Prize Cobb tolerates any soil, as long as it is light and well drained. Plant this tree in a sheltered location, in full sun or dappled shade. Tough and robust, this cultivar tolerates both cold and wet conditions. Although fully hardy in the United Kingdom, Cobnut Tree Webb's Prize will appreciate protection from frosts and strong winds. The cold will not damage or destroy the tree, but it might disrupt the pollination, resulting in poor crops. If you plan on growing Corylus Avellana Webb's Prize Cobb for its nuts, to ensure a maximum production of nuts, it is best to plant at least 2 hazel trees (of any variety) as they are wind pollinated. Space them about 4 meters apart. Not unlike all hazelnut varieties, this cultivar needs to be at least 4 years old to start producing nuts.A suitable tree for small gardens, Corylus Webb's Prize Cobb grows to be circa 3 meters high over a period of 10 years. Unless it is planted in an overly rich and fertile soil, this cultivar is not considered invasive. Often planted as a part of “nutteries”, this variety of hazel can be used for decorative purposes as well. Plant it in a mixed shrub border, where its dense foliage can serve as a textured backdrop to striking flowering plants. When grown as part of a hedgerow, this bushy tree provides shelter and food for wildlife. You might be interested in our selection of Corylus Avellana varieties, including Corylus Maxima Purpurea and Corylus Avellana Contorta.
