Eucalyptus gunnii or Cider Gum Eucalyptus. The cider gum eucalyptus tree is a very popular garden and landscape plant in UK gardens. Its architectural foliage gives year-round interest, and it has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit AGM. Native to Tasmania, eucalyptus gunnii is a quick-growing evergreen tree which will add an exotic air to your garden. When young, the tree puts out distinctive, rounded, silver-blue leaves. While it does have clusters of creamy white flowers in summer, it is most prized for its attractive juvenile leaves, both in the garden and in flower arrangements.As the tree matures, the leaves will change to an elongated sickle shape with a bluish-green colour. The mature tree’s outer cream bark peels back, revealing a brown layer underneath, adding visual interest. Reliably winter-hardy throughout most of the UK, eucalyptus gunnii can grow to a height of more than 12 meters and a spread of more than 8 metres in less than 20 years. This large and quick-growing evergreen needs a spacious spot to accommodate its mature size, but the preferred alternative for many gardeners is to coppice it to maintain continued growth of the juvenile foliage. In March or April, the trunk can be cut back to 15 to 45 cm in height, with all side branches removed, and by the end of the summer the new growth will be around a metre in height. If pollarded at a height of 1 to 2.5 metres, eucalyptus gunnii will grow into a dense canopy with mature foliage.Tolerant of any soil type with a neutral or acid ph, eucalyptus gunnii will grow even in poorly-drained conditions. It should be placed in full sun, in a sheltered position. The cider gum eucalyptus tree has an extremely vigorous root system, which should be taken into account when planning a spot for it in your garden. It is best to plant a tree that you want to grow to its mature size away from walls, buildings and drains. Placed in the middle of a lawn, a cider gum eucalyptus tree will create a striking focal point with its height and evergreen foliage. On a larger property eucalyptus gunnii is excellent as part of a windbreak, and can even be used as a source of firewood because of its quick growth rate.  A coppiced eucalyptus gunnii makes an excellent year-round screen for a patio or garden without growing to an unmanageable size. Heptacodium Miconioides. Seven Sons Plant for Sale UK & IRL

Heptacodium MiconioidesHeptacodium Miconioides, also known as the Seven Sons Plant, has only been grown in the UK in the past thirty years, but is fast becoming a garden favourite for its fragrant blooms and year-round interest. It has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Native to China, deciduous Heptacodium Miconioides has the fragrant flowers that you would expect from a member of the honeysuckle family, and those flowers bloom at a time when many other flowering shrubs are done for the season, from late summer to late autumn. The small white flowers bloom at the ends of the branches, followed by calyxes which deepen from pink to burgundy, and sometimes red berries which remain for winter interest. In the spring and summer, the narrow, dark green glossy leaves provide reliable foliage in the garden before the late-season flowers take centre stage. In the winter, the tan-coloured outer bark peels back to reveal a darker brown bark underneath, adding to the year-round appeal of this relatively rare shrub. Heptacodium miconioides will survive even severe winters in most parts of the UK.  It will take 10 to 20 years to reach a height of 4-8 metres and spread of 2.5-4 metres. heptacodium miconioides requires little or no pruning. Seven sons plant is not overly fussy in regards to growing conditions. While it is thought to prefer mildly acidic, moist, loamy soil similar to what would be found in a woodland setting, it will grow quite happily in sand, clay, or chalk as well, with acid, neutral, or alkaline soil. It does need well-drained soil, however. Although it is reliably hardy, Heptacodium Miconioides is best grown in a sheltered position, with an east, south, or west-facing aspect, in full sun or partial shade. It is usually unaffected by insect pests or disease. Heptacodium miconioides can be grown as a spreading shrub, or can be pruned and trained into a small tree as it matures. It makes a lovely planting at the back of a flower border, where its foliage will provide a background for spring and summer flowers before its own flowers blossom late in the season. It would also make an excellent specimen planting in a courtyard, or as the focal point in a lawn, where its year-round interest would be highlighted. Since seven sons plant is salt-tolerant, it is an excellent choice for a seaside garden or windy coastal areas. It would also thrive in a woodland garden. Wherever you plant it, heptacodium miconioides will attract butterflies and bees to your garden, as it provides a valuable nectar source as the season draws to a close. However, that is only a part of its year-round value that it can add to your garden!

It is an imposing tree that will grow albeit quite slowly to up to 4 metres in height. The beautiful foliage starts life as a bright green, turning yellowish green with red tips as the Spring enters early Summer. During the Summer months the leaves are a very attractive shade of green but it is the Autumn when this tree puts on a stunning display.The leaves turn to vibrant golden yellow and bronze - the tree has such a beautiful shape with multistemmed branches clearly visible below the golden canopy. Escallonia Iveyi or White Flowering Escallonia is an upright evergreen variety of Escallonia with white fragrant flowers. It’s a great hedging choice that’s been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit and the Perfect for Pollinators title. Escallonia Iveyi produces large dark green glossy leaves that grow thickly. In July through to September, sometimes earlier or later if the weather is mild, Escallonia is smothered in bright pure white flowers that attract all essential garden pollinators. The blooms are bell-shaped, abundant and produce a glorious sweet scent. Escallonia plants are perfect hedging shrubs, but only Escallonia Iveyi boasts clusters of pure white flowers throughout the summer. During winter the evergreen leaves can develop an attractive bronze tint. Escallonia Iveyi is a fast-growing hedging shrub best suited for larger areas as is it will reach three by three metres if left unchecked. Escallonia Iveyi is hardy across the UK and whilst it will need some pruning to control side shoots, it is very easy to care for tolerating dry spots, all soils and coastal areas once established. Escallonia Iveyi is ideal for wildlife-friendly hedging. It produces a tight, thickly leaved hedge within a few years. It also provides structure at the back of a border. It is an excellent flowering evergreen for windy coastal areas. Due to its thick habit Escallonia Iveyi can also be grown as a privacy screen or as a wind or noise protection barrier. If you find your tender perennials or vegetables suffer wind damage, try placing a few Escallonia Iveyi against prevailing winds. This technique also shelters and fragrances an outside seating area. It’s possible to mask sheds and other unsightly areas with a few well positioned Escallonia too. Plant individual specimens a foot or more apart for a rapidly growing screen. You can also grow Escallonia Iveyias as a specimen plant, pruning it back each year to maintain the desired shape.
