Quercus Robur, also known as Quercus Pedunculata or English Oak, is a magnificent tree native to the UK. This long-lived and much-loved tree is one of the most common species to be found in the UK, and with good reason - bring its stately beauty home to your own property!The English Oak has long held a special place in the forests of the UK, where it is a native species. As Quercus Robur matures, it forms a wide, spreading crown which casts a dappled shade onto the ground below. The 10 cm long dark green leaves emerge in May, at the same time as the 2- 4 cm long yellow catkins which hang from the branches. Once an English Oak tree has reached about 40 years, these flowers are followed in autumn by the 2- 2.5 cm long acorns that are a favourite food of many wild animals. The leaves turn a reddish-brown in autumn. Hardy in all parts of the UK, Quercus Robur will grow to a height of 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 20 to 50 years. However, it will continue to grow fairly rapidly for up to 120 years, reaching a final mature height between 20 and 40 metres. This is a tree to plant for the future, not just for your lifetime. Because of the eventual size of these trees, it is best to plant them up to 12 metres apart. No pruning is required to maintain the desired shape of these magnificent trees. Dasylirion Serratifolium Dasylirion Serratifolium, sometimes known as sandpaper stool, is a slow growing succulent. It is a rare and interesting architectural plant most suitable for pots on roof terraces and patios but also ideal for UK-based tropical themed gardens. Dasylirion Serratifolium has sharp serrated edges on the sides of each frond. Its eye-catching foliage creates a fanfare effect, typically on a dramatically short and stocky trunk, which develops as the plant matures.  Dasylirion Serratifolium, which originates from Mexico where it grows in the wild. In Europe, it is grown as an ornamental plant. It is hardy outside here in the UK in a well-draining pot and / or sheltered position provided the weather is not too extreme. If the winter is particularly severe, you can protect the plant by wrapping. Simply wrap in extreme winters by packing straw into the centre of the plant (carefully because the plant is spiky and can bite!).  Then once packed with straw, tie up all the fronds upright.  Our specimens of Dasylirion Serratifolium are mature and sizable plants and are better able to withstand harsh below zero temperatures.  These succulents can be considered reliable exotics and are ideal for adding a hardy framework to any tropical themed UK garden.

Quercus Suber is commonly known as Cork Oak and these magnificent trees can be seen all over the Mediterranean but it is the cork oak forests of the Alentejo in Portugal that supplies almost the entire cork production for wine bottles for the whole world.These trees are not newcomers to our shores, with our strong ties to Portugal these trees have been brought to the UK since the 17th Century and there are some extraordinary specimens including one at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London. Chamaerops Humilis is a hardy fan palm producing multiple stems creating a bushy appearance. Stiff dark green fan shaped leaves. It is frost and cold tolerant and is an essential plant for palm-lovers. The yellow flowers produced in early summer are followed by green fruits which turn purple.This fan palm is a hardy palm suitable for climate zones of the Southern UK. Not an overly large tropical, it fits very well into areas where space is at a premium.  Also known as Dwarf Fan Palm, it comes from the Family Arecacae and the Genus Chamaerops, known for its erect prolific stems bearing large leaves cut into linear sections.  Chamaerops bears insignificant flowers in panicles from the lower leaf axils of the plant, with small, date like fruits developing from there.The Chamaerops Humilis variety is a more bushy evergreen palm which develops into a medium-sized plant in a shrub like shape. This variety is often either multi-stemmed or stemless. The fan shaped leaves exist in a mass of foliage, rounded in appearance. The leaves can be 40-45 centimetres in length.  This fan palm’s yellow flowers are small, emerging from short, rigid panicles and arise from mature plants only.  The green fruits transition to purple.It will take Chamaerops Humilis between 20-50 years to reach its ultimate growth of between 1.5-2.5 in height and 1.0-1.5 ultimate spread.Hardy to zone H4 in the UK, they prefer to be grown in a sheltered position which can provide fairly bright but indirect lighting. Suggested aspects are from the North or East facing positions. In areas other than H4, they can be grown under glass or as a houseplant.  In the indoor environment, during the growing season, they respond to moderate watering and balanced fertiliser applications. Over the winter, reduce rate of watering.These are a low maintenance palm, with no pruning required. They prefer a slightly acidic pH, a well drained soil environment with some density. It has long been associated with Christmas and with the ancient religions - the Roman god Bacchus wore an ivy wreath, and it was a sacred plant for the Druids. The leaves are much more rigid and compact than the very popular Trachycarpus Fortunei, also a hardy palm suited to growing outdoors in the UK. Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is one of the most beautiful of the palms that we are able to grow here in the UK and Ireland. Also known as Waggy, and Dwarf Chusan Palm, Trachycarpus Wagnerianus has its origins in Germany, where it was named by Ludwig Winter to honour his fellow horticulturalist, Albert Wagner. As it turns out, Wagner had imported a quantity of this more compact Trachycarpus from Japan; and eventually sold his entire inventory to Mr Winter. If you are seeking an exquisite specimen to bring an exotic style to your garden, Trachycarpus wagnerianus is certainly a specimen you should be adding.The hardiest of palms grown in our region, Dwarf Chusan Palm will tolerate snow, frost, and temperatures down to -15OC. Even in the strongest winds, this cold tolerant palm will maintain its shape and appearance. Unlike many exotics, this offering is truly a low maintenance delight.Waggies will grow to 5-6 metres in ultimate height, and about 2 metres in spread (over 50 years) ; and have a slow growth habit. They prefer full sun but can do well in partial shade exposures as well.  Provide a moist, rich, and well-drained soil media of near neutral, slightly acidic, or slightly alkaline pH.One of the most prominent features of Trachycarpus Wagnerianus is their small, stiff leaves, making them much tougher than the ‘standard’ and larger Trachycarpus Fortunei.
