Jiu-jitsu Unleashed - Eddie Bravo - Bog - McGraw-Hill Education - Europe - Plusbog.dk

With martial arts champions such as Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, giving training tips in Muscle & Fitness and Men’s Journal, and conducting interviews on Howard Stern’s radio show, millions of people are turning to the martial arts for sport, a means of self-defense, and a form of exercise. Many of these newcomers to the martial arts never stepped foot into a martial arts training facility, and have no plans of ever doing so. They want to learn to defend themselves without traveling to a gym or paying steep monthly dues. Some purchase martial arts guidebooks so they can prepare themselves both mentally and physically to enter a dojo a year or two down the road. Martial Arts Unleashed: Jiu-jitsu offers readers: • A detailed history and evolution of the discipline. • A description of the various theories and strategies behind training and competing. • A breakdown of the gear and training space needed to get started. • A description of warm-up routines, footwork, and stances. • Detailed instruction accompanied by step-by-step photographs that divulge everything from the basic kicks, punches, and blocks to the most advanced techniques. • Instruction on how to combine various techniques into sophisticated combinations. • Sample workouts for all levels of training. • Weight lifting programs to improve strength. • Cardiovascular workouts to improve stamina. • Sample diets to improve overall health. • Resources that show readers where to ply their trade and learn even more. For those desiring to learn the martial arts for self-defense rather than sport, the book features a section on those techniques best suited for practical application. For the more advanced students, the book describes how to blend this particular discipline with other styles, utilize certain techniques to defeat practitioners of other disciplines, and prepare for a variety of competitions.

Comfort in Darkness - Rickson Gracie - Bog - HarperCollins Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

A masterwork about the art of combat and the invisible powers within us all from Rickson Gracie, the world’s greatest Jiu Jitsu fighter and New York Times bestselling author of Breathe A mythic figure in fighting and a legendary member of the “first family of martial arts,” Rickson Gracie is considered the godfather of what we recognize today as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Although Rickson’s three decades of total dominance in Jiu Jitsu is astounding, even more astounding is the serenity and spiritual depth of his approach to combat. For Rickson, Jiu Jitsu is a metaphor for life. Some consider Jiu Jitsu a martial art, others consider it a sport, but to Gracie, it is a philosophical system he uses to face and evaluate life’s challenges and maintain happiness and mental balance. Gracie wrote Comfort in Darkness after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a terminal sentence which he views as the final fight of his life, one he knows he will eventually lose. This is Gracie’s defining life statement about his spiritual and technical practice. For the first time, Gracie reveals his time-tested theories and techniques of invisible Jiu Jitsu, a combat system and life philosophy for life he developed over the course of his life. Anyone can use the principles of invisible Jiu Jitsu to awaken their dormant inherent power and apply it to their everyday lives. An indispensable tool for any fighter or seeker, Comfort in Darkness is a timeless book of strategy about aligning the mind, body, and spirit.

A History of the Guards Armoured Formations 1941-1945 - Charles Richard Trumpess - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A History of the Guards Armoured Formations 1941-1945 - Charles Richard Trumpess - Bog - Pen & Sword Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Although the Guards Armoured Division and its sister formation the 6th Guards (Tank) Brigade shared a common origin, they went on to forge quite different operational records. One of the units would be tarnished by its failures while the other was applauded for its successes. A month after VE Day, the two Guards’ armoured formations would be reunited one last time before being officially disbanded. During the intervening years, the Guards faced criticism, public ridicule, the threat of disbandment, and many other challenges. Nevertheless, these armoured Guardsmen would prevail on the battlefield. In response to the threat of a German invasion of the British Isles, the Guards Armoured Division formed in the spring of 1941\. But why convert battalions of Foot Guards, considered by many to be first-class infantry, into an armoured formation? Certainly, many people were sceptical that 'spit-and-polish' Guardsmen could ever adapt to a new armoured role. As the threat of invasion receded, the Guards Armoured Division and 6th Guards (Tank) Brigade embarked on years of training while the war raged elsewhere. This book examines the decision to form the Guards Armoured Division and then keep it at home for an extended period. Once deployed to Normandy, the fighting quickly revealed shortcomings in the Division's training, equipment, and operational procedures. In contrast, when the Churchill tanks of the 6th Guards (Tank) Brigade went into action south of Caumont it was to prove an affirmation of everything they had learnt in training. Over the next ten months, the Guards’ armoured formations would celebrate victories and lament failures while fighting their way across northwest Europe. This book examines how the decision to raise a Guards Armoured Division came about, and why the idea met with such strong opposition. It also takes an in-depth look at the training, equipment, and culture of the Brigade of Guards, and how that influenced the two formations’ preparedness for war. Once deployed overseas, the book explores how the Guards were able to adapt to changing conditions on the battlefield and adopt new operational and tactical procedures. Finally, the book reveals why the Guards’ armoured formations were hurriedly disbanded in June 1945\. Additionally, using new archive material, the book discloses why it took over a decade to publish the ‘official’ history of the Guards Armoured Division.
