The Microbiome, Gut Health and Oriental Medicine - Lisa Lee - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The Microbiome, Gut Health and Oriental Medicine - Lisa Lee - Bog - Jessica Kingsley Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The human microbiome and its resident micro-organisms have in recent years come to represent a new frontier in health research and science. Yet this body of knowledge has hitherto been little addressed within Oriental Medicine theory and has consequently been underutilised in practice. The book proposes a novel and ground-breaking approach to understanding and influencing gut health and the microbiome by integrating the latest evidence from Western medical research and the long-established theory and practice of Oriental medicine. Building on an understanding of the body as a complete ecosystem where symbiotic relationships maintain balance in both mind and body, this integrative model sheds new light on an area that has seen rapidly growing interest both in and out of scientific communities, providing a more holistic and comprehensive perspective that both unites and broadens the potential applications of microbiome knowledge across medical and therapeutic traditions. The book''s focus on the microbiome of the gastro-intestinal tract allows to explore the far-reaching and wide-ranging effects of the gut''s micro-organisms on other body systems, on their ability to maintain good physical and mental health, and to fight disease and illness. This emphasis further provides readers with a practical guide to understanding and supporting a well-functioning gut and microbiome, through lifestyle choices and practices that focus on eating well, sleep hygiene, and mindful living. The booming interest in the area of gut health makes this compelling, accessible and informative hands-on book, an important tool for patients and practitioners of Oriental medicine and other relevant disciplines, offering readers a unique opportunity to add a new dimension to their knowledge of gut health. It will allow practitioners to deepen their professional development and enhance the quality of the care they provide by honing therapeutic skills and creating hybrid treatment plans that combine the latest findings from the gut-health literature and Oriental medicine.

Gut Renovation - Dr. Roshini Raj - Bog - HarperCollins - Plusbog.dk

Combining the latest developments and research discoveries, board-certified gastroenterologist and medical host on CNN and Fox News, Dr. Roshini Raj shows the ways in which the microbiome impacts overall well-being, and helps readers reset their biological clocks by improving their gut health. With one in four Americans suffering from digestive health issues every day, gut health has become an increasingly important part of wellness. With the human body, so many issues can be improved upon, or cured, by balancing the microbiome. But the microbiome—a community of bacteria, viruses, and yeasts that dwell in the body—has long been something that the average person can find baffling—and maybe a little bit gross. By offering simple and straightforward answers to questions like what one should be eating, what probiotics are, which vitamins and medicines really work, Dr. Raj demystifies the gut. She uses the idea of a home renovation to show how different organs and parts of the body can be “renovated” in order to optimize the microbiome. After all, balancing one’s microbiome improves digestive health, brain function, emotional stability, the body’s response to inflammation, immunity, and lessens premature aging. Melding the latest developments and discoveries in microbiome research, along with Dr. Raj’s practical tips developed from her years of clinical experience, Gut Renovation shows readers how to turn back the biological clock and revamp the way they live forever.

The Gut-Immune Connection - Emeran Mayer - Bog - HarperCollins Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Gut-Immune Connection - Emeran Mayer - Bog - HarperCollins Publishers Inc - Plusbog.dk

From one of today’s leading experts on the emerging science of the microbiome comes a ground-breaking book that offers, for the first time, evidence that the gut-microbiome plays a pivotal role in the health crises of the twenty-first century. In his acclaimed book, The Mind-Gut Connection, physician, UCLA professor, and researcher Dr. Emeran Mayer offered groundbreaking evidence of the critical role of the microbiome in neurological and cognitive health, proving once and for all the power and legitimacy of the “mind-body connection.” Now, in The Gut-Immune Connection, Dr. Mayer proposes an even more radical paradigm shift: that the gut microbiome is at the center of virtually every disease that defines our 21st-century public health crisis. Cutting-edge research continues to advance our understanding of the function and impact of the billions of organisms that live in the GI tract, and in Dr. Mayer’s own research, he has amassed evidence that the “conversation” that takes place between these microbes and our various organs and bodily systems is critical to human health. When that conversation goes awry, we suffer, often becoming seriously ill. Combining clinical experience with up-to-the-minute science, The Gut-Immune Connection offers a comprehensive look at the link between alterations to the gut microbiome and the development chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, as well as susceptibility to infectious diseases like Covid-19. Dr. Mayer argues that it’s essential we understand the profound and far-reaching effects of gut health and offers clear-cut strategies to reverse the steady upward rise of these illnesses, including a model for nutrition to support the microbiome. But time is running out: a plague of antimicrobial resistance is only a few decades away if we don’t make critical changes to our food supply, including returning to sustainable practices that maintain the microbial diversity of the soil. To turn the tide of chronic and infectious disease tomorrow, we must shift the way we live today.

Gut Feelings - Alessio Fasano - Bog - MIT Press Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Discover why the gut microbiome holds the keys to human health—and can change the way we understand, treat, and prevent disease. “A detailed and scientifically rigorous survey . . . gives readers a clearer sense of the current state of medical knowledge.” —The New York Review of BooksWe are at the dawn of a new scientific revolution. Our understanding of how to treat and prevent diseases has been transformed by knowledge of the microbiome—the rich ecosystem of microorganisms in and on every human. In Gut Feelings, Alessio Fasano and Susie Flaherty show why we must go beyond the older, myopic view of microorganisms as our enemies to a broader understanding of the microbiome as a parallel civilization that we need to understand, respect, and engage with for the benefit of our own health. Recent advances in understanding the microbiome and its role in human health dovetail with the development of personalized or “precision” medicine to create treatments and prevention programs targeted to the molecular imprint of an individual. Fasano and Flaherty explore the microbiome's part in such diseases as gut inflammatory disorders, obesity, neurological conditions, and cancer, and they explain new research in prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, and psychobiotics. They also discuss the microbiome and immune function, including a possible role in COVID-19 treatment. By simultaneously expanding our perspective to encompass large datasets and multiple factors in human health, and narrowing our focus to identify the individual communities in the human microbiome, we will enlarge—and perhaps reinvent—our understanding of how to combat disease and maintain health.

The Anti-Viral Gut - Robynne Chutkan - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

The Anti-Viral Gut - Robynne Chutkan - Bog - Penguin Putnam Inc - Plusbog.dk

Multiple studies have now confirmed a dramatic link between the health of our microbiome - the trillions of bacteria that live in our digestive tract and help fight invading viruses - and our likelihood of getting devastating illnesses like COVID. The balance of these microscopic organisms can also influence the severity of infection, and impact our body''s ability to combat lingering symptoms including inflammation, brain fog, fatigue, depression, and more. In The Anti-Viral Gut, Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains this groundbreaking research and offers a prescriptive plan for anyone recovering from a viral illness to rehab their gut microbes and restore their health. Low-fiber diets, limited exposure to nature, and overzealous use of pharmaceuticals have messed up our microbiome, making many of us susceptible to the worst long-hauler effects of COVID. But the good news is that unlike our genes, our microbiome can change dramatically in as little as thirty hours after food reaches the gut, offering a pathway back to health for those who are suffering, and proven protection for those who want to stay well. In this powerful road map to strengthening the gut immune system and feeling like ''you'' again after illness, Chutkan gives practical advice for balancing diet, exercise, and time outdoors - vegetables, sweat, and dirt - to optimize overall health. The Anti-Viral Gut includes: a step-by-step nutrition plan, including 25 recipes and an explanation of which foods and preparation methods bring you the fastest results; protocols for replacing immune-suppressive, microbiome-disruptive medications with safer alternatives; guidelines for exercise, sleep hygiene, and intermittent fasting; methods for working mindfulness, breathwork, and meditation into your daily routine; advice on maximizing the potent anti-viral effects of nature. Complete with inspiring stories from Dr. Chutkan''s own patients who have battled COVID, The Anti-Viral Gut will empower readers to jump-start their journey toward healing.

The Microbiome Connection - Dr. Ali Rezaie - Bog - Surrey Books,U.S. - Plusbog.dk

An essential resource to understanding gut health, the microbiome, and their connection to maintain digestive balance through diet—featuring meal planning guides and sample menus—by two leading experts in the field. Over the last fifteen years, research into the vast inner workings of the “microbiome” (the trillions of bacteria harbored in the gut) has led to groundbreaking advances in human health and well-being. Now, two of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Mark Pimentel and Dr. Ali Rezaie at Cedars-Sinai, have teamed up to create The Microbiome Connection , a must-have guide that arms readers with all of the knowledge and resources necessary to understand their microbiome, any symptoms they may be experiencing, and how to navigate symptom relief. An estimated 70 million people in the United States are affected by SIBO, IBS, or one of the more than a dozen other diseases linked to digestive health, and 74% of Americans say they live with symptoms of digestive discomfort. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)—the most common gastrointestinal condition in the United States—affects millions of people of all ages. Not only do those who suffer from IBS and its similar, sister diagnosis—small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)—experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, they may also avoid participating in activities, social events, or travel for fear of having to constantly disappear to the bathroom or the embarrassment of explaining their discomfort. In The Microbiome Connection , doctors Pimentel and Rezaie provide explanations of what happens to IBS/SIBO patients from the first diagnosis to the end of treatment; reveal what changes can occur in the body in terms of the underlying physical processes to symptoms that may develop; and share evidence-based management and treatment of those symptoms through dietary changes and drug treatment. Also included are meal plans and sample menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all of which are accompanied by explanations of which foods to eat in moderation and which foods to avoid because they will feed bacteria in the gut and could cause additional symptoms. A must-have resource for anyone who suffers from IBS or SIBO, or who wants to better understand their microbiome, this book will provide readers with the knowledge and resources to live a gut-happy and gut-healthy life.

Gut Anthro - Amber Benezra - Bog - University of Minnesota Press - Plusbog.dk

Gut Anthro - Amber Benezra - Bog - University of Minnesota Press - Plusbog.dk

A fascinating ethnography of microbes that opens up new spaces for anthropological inquiry The trillions of microbes in and on our bodies are determined by not only biology but also our social connections. Gut Anthro tells the fascinating story of how a sociocultural anthropologist developed a collaborative “anthropology of microbes” with a human microbial ecologist to address global health crises across disciplines. It asks: what would it mean for anthropology to act with science? Based partly at a preeminent U.S. lab studying the human microbiome, the Center for Genome Sciences at Washington University, and partly at a field site in Bangladesh studying infant malnutrition, it examines how microbes travel between human guts in the “field” and in microbiome laboratories, influencing definitions of health and disease, and how the microbiome can change our views on evolution, agency, and life. As lab scientists studied the interrelationships between gut microbes and malnutrition in resource-poor countries, Amber Benezra explored ways to reconcile the scale and speed differences between the lab, the intimate biosocial practices of Bangladeshi mothers and their children, and the looming structural violence of poverty. In vital ways, Gut Anthro is about what it means to collaborate—with mothers, local field researchers in Bangladesh, massive philanthropic global health organizations, with the microbiome scientists, and, of course, with microbes. It follows microbes through various enactments in scientific research—microbes as kin, as data, and as race. Revealing how racial categories are used in microbiome research, Benezra argues that microbial differences need transdisciplinary collaboration to address racial health disparities without reifying race as a straightforward biological or social designation. Gut Anthro is a tour de force of science studies and medical anthropology as well as an intensely personal and deeply theoretical accounting of what it means to do anthropology today. Cover alt text:Black background overlaid with a pink organic path suggestive of a human digestive system. Title appears within the guts as if being processed.

A Gut Feeling - Heather Anne Wise - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

We all know sugar is bad for us, so why can’t we stop eating it? A Gut Feeling gives a personal and scientific look into the world of microbes that live within our bodies and how they can explain our relationship to and cravings for certain foods. Heather Wise takes the reader through a hidden inner world of microflora that shapes our mood, physical health, sweet cravings, and even genes. She makes us question whether a diet high in sugary, processed, dead foods—devoid of any microscopic life—may be causing us to feel sick, tired and depressed. The microbiome is emerging as the answer to many of our most sought after questions. Using her own story and the science currently available, Wise provides a window into the latest research on the vast world of microbes in our bodies. She explains in simple terms how what we eat can change the expression of our genes and how this symbiotic relationship between microbes and human cells can determine our health. This understanding sheds light on the fact that the genetic makeup of our bodies is more malleable than we could have ever imagined. Wise’s book gives us the opportunity to transform our health for the better by mindfully eating foods, herbs, and teas that improve the health of our microbiome, and cutting down on the foods, medications, and chemicals in our environment that are diminishing beneficial microbes in our delicate inner ecosystem.A Gut Feeling offers practical steps to rebalancing and healing our gut microbiome to relieve stress, digestive upsets, inflammation, bloat, excess belly fat, and improve mood. Wise offers a needed alternative to the complex world of fad diets and calorie counting in this easy, evidence-based guide for wellbeing. Environmental Chemicals, the Human Microbiome, and Health Risk - Board On Environmental Studies And Toxicology - Bog - National Academies Press -

A great number of diverse microorganisms inhabit the human body and are collectively referred to as the human microbiome. Until recently, the role of the human microbiome in maintaining human health was not fully appreciated. Today, however, research is beginning to elucidate associations between perturbations in the human microbiome and human disease and the factors that might be responsible for the perturbations. Studies have indicated that the human microbiome could be affected by environmental chemicals or could modulate exposure to environmental chemicals. Environmental Chemicals, the Human Microbiome, and Health Risk presents a research strategy to improve our understanding of the interactions between environmental chemicals and the human microbiome and the implications of those interactions for human health risk. This report identifies barriers to such research and opportunities for collaboration, highlights key aspects of the human microbiome and its relation to health, describes potential interactions between environmental chemicals and the human microbiome, reviews the risk-assessment framework and reasons for incorporating chemical–microbiome interactions. The Food Forum convened a public workshop on February 22-23, 2012, to explore current and emerging knowledge of the human microbiome, its role in human health, its interaction with the diet, and the translation of new research findings into tools and products that improve the nutritional quality of the food supply. The Human Microbiome, Diet, and Health: Workshop Summary summarizes the presentations and discussions that took place during the workshop. Over the two day workshop, several themes covered included:The microbiome is integral to human physiology, health, and disease. The microbiome is arguably the most intimate connection that humans have with their external environment, mostly through diet. Given the emerging nature of research on the microbiome, some important methodology issues might still have to be resolved with respect to undersampling and a lack of causal and mechanistic studies. Dietary interventions intended to have an impact on host biology via their impact on the microbiome are being developed, and the market for these products is seeing tremendous success. However, the current regulatory framework poses challenges to industry interest and investment.
