March of the Robot Army

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

Pennsylvania 6-5000

In 1942 Glenn Miller voluntarily joined the army and founded the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band and with his music he kept up the morale of the troops. In December 1944 he boarded an aircraft in England that would never reach its destination (France) - the plane was never found. The patriotic legend of this great composer however lives on in his music. Pennsylvania 6-5000 was one of the greatest successes of his famous band and is as popular today as it was in the 1940s.

Funeral March : for Concert Band

The Funeral March is a spectre-like fantasy on the U.S. Army Air Corps Song. This publication is the fully realized performance edition from the short score manuscript left by the composer from his time in the military during World War II.

Thyellene : The Battle on the Heath

The Battle on the Heath On 24 January 1597, the ‘Tielenheide’ - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen, south of Turnhout-was the scene of a great battle. Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army,crushingly defeated Count Varax, a Burgundian general of the Spanish army. In military circles, the Battle of Turnhout caused quite a stir: a Spanish army of five thousand men was initially held up for hours through daring shortmoves by fifteen cavalrymen and a few hundred foot-soldiers -and subsequently, this Spanish army was overpowered by barely a thousand cavalrymen, without the help of the infantrymen. New weaponry proved its value that day. TheDutch cavalrymen were not armed with spears, as previously, but with long, carbine-like pistols . Before the pikemen of the Spanish army could stick their fearsome, six-metre-long spears into the ground to protect themselvesagainst the onrushing horses, they were shot to pieces or knocked down. During the battle, the state troops seized a number of flags, which would embellish the Ridderzaal (Knights’ Hall) in The Hague for years.In a contemporaryDutch military magazine, the victory at the ‘Tielenheide’ has been described as “ the heaviest blow ever delivered by the Dutch cavalry”. The location where the battle took place is no langer moorland: it is now a pine forestplanted more than a century age, to meet the demand for wood in the old coalmines of Limburg . Part of the forest is now the military territory of the Third Paratroop Batallion, and part is now the De Waal nature reserve: it isnot accessible to the public. In Tielen there is still a street called the Tielenheide, near the former moorland.

The Brigadier

Brigadier is a senior military rank who typically commands a Brigade consisting of three battalions, approximately 3000 soldiers. The appointment to a high-ranking officer in the Army provides a lot of Swiss communities with the opportunity to celebrate. When Heinrich Tanner was promoted to Brigadier, the ‘Knabenmusik der Stadt St. Gallen’ wanted to pay tribute by dedicating a march to him. The result was this rousing march by Franco Cesarini.

Los Colores de Fiesta

Los Colores de Fiesta was commissioned by the Pride of San Antonio Show Band to celebrate the year-long 300th Anniversary Fiesta of the city in 2018. As a former member of the South San Antonio and John Jay High School Bands, and later with the 5th Army Band, composer Charles Booker marched in the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, America's largest illuminated night parade and the highlight of Fiesta. This rhapsodic work celebrates the exciting atmosphere of Fiesta, as well as the rich and diverse cultures it represents.

The Many Moods of Christmas: Suite No. 2

The extensive passages for orchestra alone in The Many Moods of Christmas suites represent some of Robert Russell Bennett's most brilliant and attractive writing based on familiar carols. This Mark Rogers Edition for wind band alone is the initial offering in an ongoing series which will bring all four of these suites to the repertory of band conductors in the coming years. Included are Joy to the Worls, with optional antiphonal Salvation Army brass band, the Pastoral Symphony from Handels Messiah, Away in a Manger, concluding with a rousing medley of The March of the Three Kings and Fum, Fum, Fum!

I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.
