Scherzo: Cat and Mouse

The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating.

As All The Heavens Were a Bell

Commissioned as a tribute to the Fire Department of New York City, this immensely moving work was premiered at an emotional performance for the firefighters in Manhattan this past March. The composition opens with a striking brassfanfare accompanied by woodwind flourishes. A sensitive treatment of the melody from America (My Country, 'Tis Of Thee) follows using haunting vocal colors (cued in F Horns). The nation in turmoil is depicted in an intenselydriving and powerful section which evolves marvelously into a full-blown treatment of America with chorus and band. A truly magnificent musical tribute to the heroes of 9/11.

The Nutcracker

Here is a superb symphonic treatment of the best-known movements from Tchaikovsky's ballet. Not only does Jim Curnow capture the spirit of the orchestral version, but he has transformed the work into a setting that lets the modernconcert band sound its best.

Chorale and Canzone : based on 'From Highest Heaven I Come to Tell'

The words and lyrics of the Christmas Carol From Highest Heaven I Come To Tell were written by the great Martin Luther (1483-1546) and can be found in The Hymns of Martin Luther. Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther, the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535. Add a majestic Baroque feel to any concert with this simple yet effective arrangement.

With music to both the “Olsenbanden” movies and “Pinchcliffe Grand Prix”, one would almost believe that Bent Fabricius-Bjerre was a Norwegian. But the Danish film and TV composer has a very large production and won a Grammy with “Alley Cat” in 1962. Other well-known series he has written music for are the “Matador”, “The Clown” and “The House at Christianshavn”. This arrangement is built on the recording of “Pinchcliffe Grand Prix”, but expanded with a short solo section. This may well be improvised. Please be free to choose and instrumentation that sounds the best for your ensemble. Saxophones can often strengthen the voices you need to bring forth.

Kaija Saariaho: Io (Score)

The harmonic basis for this composition is found from analysing sounds of individual instruments, with the non-harmonic sounds produced on double bass and bass flute, these provide a model for the chord structure of the piece.The harmonic energy of the piece is provided through the treatment of timbre as a system, which is formed from the categorisation of instruments and the sounds they produce. The instruments are divided into different categories according to how and where they place themselves along an axis whose end points are either clear or noise like sounds. In this approach clear, clean sounds are considered consonances with noises as dissonances.Work for Chamber Ensemble, Tape and Live Electronics. Premiered in the Pompidou Centre, Paris in in July 1987, and commissioned by IRCAM for the Ensemble Intercontemporain to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Centre Georges-Pompidou. Winner of the 1998 Ars Electronica Prize.

Sir Roger De Coverley (Concert Band Score And Parts)

Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
