In honor of the band's 215th anniversary, Mr. Williams composed awork specifically for this storied ensemble. Inspired by the operas of Bellini, Saverio Mercadante created this richly contrasting overture from lyrical and dramatic moments in his own works. This arrangement offers modern concert bands access to a composition that, due to its obsoleteinstrumentation, is otherwise lost forever.

Liberty Fanfare

One hundred years after the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886, John Williams was commissioned to compose a fanfare for the re-dedication ceremony. At this event, Mr. Williams led the Boston Pops Orchestra in the firstperformance of this work, which the composer described as “a group of American airs and tunes of my own invention.”

Homeland : An Alpine Reflexion

In Homeland, Austrian composer Otto M. Schwarz has set to music the beauty of his own country in a musical monument. The work describes the area of Hohe Tauern (High Tauern) which in 1913, following the American model, was declared the firstnational park in Europe. In Schwarz’s music it’s easy to hear how the ancient mountains, glaciers, native wildlife and the famous Krimml waterfalls offer an impressive natural spectacle that needs to be protected.

Purcellian Fantasia : based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II

This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme.

Norman Rockwell Suite

Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) is one of the most beloved American artists. Widley known for his cover illustrations of The Saturday Evening Post, he excelled at painting the lives of ordinary Americans with his warmth, detailedobservations, and sense of humor. Composer Hayato Hirose was inspired by three of Rockwell's major works and expressed his own impressions of them in this music. This heart-warming piece will add an embracing and touchingimpression to a concert, lifting the spirits of the audience.

The Essence of Youth

In The Essence of Youth the composer gives an insight into childhood and youth — inspired by his own daughter. The opening of sparking rhythms, dynamic contrasts and changes of time signature paint a vivid picture of the unpredictability of children. The first and second movements recount the love — and also tension and the worries — in the adult-child bond, through dissonant harmonies but also pretty melodies. The fugue-like ending leads to a final splendid chorale: a picture of proud parents with their child!

Concerto Tricolore : for Trumpet (Flugel Horn) and Band

Concerto Tricolore is a captivating trumpet concerto in three movements. Each movement has its own musical character resulting in a varied and entertaining piece. The first movement has a vivid and virtuoso character composed in a neoclassical style, movement two is written for flugel horn with the accompaniment functioning as a soft, romantic background for this beautiful instrument. The final movement, with its jazzy character, reflects the atmosphere of an old, smoky jazz club in Chicago. A magnificent new opus in the repertoire for solo trumpet and concert band.

A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

Balkanya

Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds, brass and percussion all have equal parts, making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.

The Last Friend of NAPOLEON

The Last Friend of Napoleon is based on a true piece of Dutch history. In October 1813, when Napoleon was beaten after his unsuccessful Russian campaign, the French withdrew from the Netherlands. At the beginning of 1814, the whole country had been liberated except for the town of Delfzijl, still occupied by French troops. This programmatic work is about political and military stubbornness, chasing dreams, and about love always following its own unequalled way. Being one of the most acknowledged composers of today, Dirk Brossé has created an epic work that depicts a dramatic story, using the full range of the symphonic band resulting in challenging brass passages, a widerange of percussion and a lot of strong, beautiful and melodic material.

Elegy I : Jealousy

Elegy I ‘Jealousy’ has been named after John Donne’s poem of the same name. This English poet (1572-1631) wrote an entire series of elegies, each with its own theme. Jealousy can trigger various emotions, ranging from disappointment, grief, or regret, to madness and anger. All these emotions have been incorporated into this composition. Jacob de Haan was inspired by three different works of art: a poem (the aforementioned poem by John Donne), a painting by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (Jealousy in the Garden) and an old French chanson about jealousy (Je ne l’ose dire) by the sixteenth-century French composer Pierre Certon. The music refers repeatedly to thischanson - sometimes through key notes from the melody that serve as the starting point for new, isolated themes and sometimes through quotations of the original version.

Seid : for Concert Band

«Seid» (pronounced sayed was a divination ceremony practised by the Vikings which could be used to reveal knowledge of the future. During the ceremony, woman sang incantations and the Seeress (Völva) passed into a kind of trance. In other arctic cultures similar ceremonies took place during which the Medicine man (Sage), or Shaman, would beat a drum covered with magic runes, and he too would pass into a trance, reaching the deepest part of his own sub-consciousness - a journey beyond time and space... “Seid” was commissioned by The Norwegian Band Federation and European Brass Band Assosiation for the European Brass Band Championship in 1996. The version for Concert Bandwas commissioned by Frode Amundsen and Borge Musikkorps in 2018. Supported by NOPA (Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists)

Amazonia

This major concert work cosists o five movements.1st movement: La Laguna del ShimbeSituated high up in the Andes mountains in Northern Peru are the Huaringas, a group of lagoons in isolated and mysterious surroundings. The water has healing powersand for centuries traditional healers have settled there in small villages. From far the sick come to the Huaringas to be treated in nightly rituals, in which the hallucinating juice of the San Pedro cactus gives the prophet a look inside hispatient. The biggest lagoon is the “Laguna del Shimbe”, one of the countless wells of the immense Amazon stream.2nd movement: Los AguarunasFurther downstream in Northern Peru we come across the rain tribe of Los Aguarunas. It’s a proud, beautiful andindependent race, which has never succumbed to domination, not even from the Incas. They live from everything the forest has to offer: fish, fruit, plants, ... . They also grow some crops and live as semi-nomads. They take their fate into their ownhands and after having made contact with modern civilisation, they have integrated new elements into their lives without betraying their own ways.3rd movement: MekaronMekaron is an Indian word meaning “picture”, “soul”, “essence”. The Indians are theorigina inhabitants of the Amazon region. They either live in one place as a group or move around a large region. They all have their own political system, their own language and an intense social life. At the same time they are master of music andmedicine. “Everywhere the white man goes, he leaves a wilderness behind him”, wrote the North American Indian leader Seatl in 1885. As a result of these contacts with the whites, the disruption of most Indian societies began. (In this century alone,80 tribes have vanished completely).4th movement: KêêtuajêThis is the name of the initiating ceremony of the Krahô tribe in the Brazilian state of Goias, in which young boys and girls enter adult life. They are cleansed with water, painted with redpaint and covered with feathers, after which the ritual dance holds the entire tribe spell-bound.5th movement: Paulino FaiakanIn 1988 the Indian chiefs Faiakan and Raoni Kaiapo came to Europe to protest against the building of the Altamira dam inBrazil. As a result of the dam the Indians would be driven from their traditional land and enormous artificial would be created. The project was supported financially by, amongst others, the European Community. In February 1989 the Indian tribesaround Altamira held a protest march for the first time in their history together. Amongst other things they paid tribute tot Chico Mendez, who, murdered in 1988, was the leader of the rubber syndicate and a fierce opponent of the destruction of theBrazilian rain forest. Brazilian and world opinion was awakened. The building of the dam was -albeit temporarily - stopped.

Ukrainian Rhapsody

Folk music plays an important role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Their country covers an area of over 600.000 square kilometres and has more than fifty million inhabitants. In the north there are vast woods, in the west one finds the picturesque Carpatian mountains and valleys, and in the centre and the south Ukraine has its famous steppes with fertile black soil. The river Dnjepr divides the country in two, forming a natural frontier between the western and eastern regions, which each have their own distinctively different musical folklore. This diversity forms the musical basis for Ukrainian Rhapsody. The work consists of three movements: the first one, in a moderatetempo, without a pause flows into a slow but very expressive middle movement, resulting in a powerful climax. The composition ends with the Gopak: a rousing dance.

Louis Vierne (1870 1937) brought symphonic French organ music to its stylistic climax. Besides being a productive composer, he also gained a reputation as a brilliant improviser at his place of employment, the Notre DameCathedral in Paris, and throughout the world.In 1928 Vierne, one of the best-known organists of his day, made one of the earliest organ recordings, playing Bach works and his own improvisations in Notre Dame.Thisscholarly practical edition is based on the critical examination and evaluation of all the autographs, engravers’ copies and first prints available, as well as on his writings and previously unpublished letters. This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folktunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the "Provence". The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some "spicy" notes (... just like the wellknown "Provençal sauce"! ...). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section.Every movement has its own character: "Un Ange a fa la crido" (= An angel brought the creed / credo) is like a bourrée, "Adam e sa Coumpagnou" (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, "Lou Fustié" (= the carpenter)a fast dance and finally "Lis Escoubo" (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention.

Other Lives

Other Lives is works perfectly for a competition but can also be programmed as concert work. The dark chords at the beginning of the piece are derived from “Der Doppelgänger”, one of Franz Schubert’s late songs. After a short development the music begins to accelerate and find its own shape, gradually moving away from the introduction. The entire first part, “Rage”, has an intensely agitated character. The ensuing “Reflection” turns back to the initial chord progression, before a series of interspersing solos explore time and space at a slower pace. After another musical surge, the music is brought close to silence and then gives way to the third part, “Redemption”.Here, a widely spaced sound field contains a remote allusion to another work by Schubert “Rückblick”. After this farewell, an abstract musical transformation triggers an emotional change, as the initial motifs are now presented in their inversed form in order to create a much brighter harmonic landscape. Moreover, in the last part of the piece, “Renewal”, the grim, tense atmosphere of the first part is transformed into a great energy. Other Lives was commissioned by the Valaisia Brass Band.

Spartacus

Spartacus is a "Symphonic Tone Poem" with 3 joints. Each section has its own melodical materials, however: in the final movement the main theme from the second section returns in a 'grandioso'-tutti. The last bar but one recaptures the 'oriental' atmosphere of the very beginning. The first section (= from the beginning till J) builds up a climax by repeating and accumulating some melodical and rhythmical stuctures. The oriental character of the melodical fragments refers to the origin of the Roman slaves. The second section evokes the love between Spartacus and his loveby giving a peaceful atmosphere. The mean theme (presented the first time at letter L) has a broad andwide character and refers slightly to filmmusic. In this part of the composition, a special attention is given to the orchestration. The final section is more agressive and martial and refers to the revolt of the slaves against the Roman oppressors. In the middle of this movement, an accumulation of the 12 tones symbolizes the crucifixion of the slaves: the english horn resumes partly the cadenza of the flute (at letter J), as if he wants to show again the eternal love between Spartacus and his love a very last time ... The theme at the third bar of letter T is actually based on the 2nd theme of this section (which starts at the fifth bar of letter R), but has been worked out rhytmically.
