Pinus Pinea. Italian Stone Pine Nut Tree for sale London UK

Pinus Pinea or Stone Pine is also known as the Italian Stone Pine, Umbrella Pine or Pine Nut Tree. These mature Pinus Pinea specimens have been grown and shaped as full stardard trees with long, clear stems and a lovely, rounded canopy on top. Pinus Pinea Full Standard trees can be used for above fence screening or as stand-alone ornamental specimens. The Pinus Pinea is a lovely conifer tree that naturally features a rounded, broad flattened umbrella-like canopy. It has a tall spreading habit with twisted, glossy green needle-like, soft leaves. The canopy spread can be kept in check with regular clipping. In the Roman times, Italian stone pines were widely grown for their deliciously edible pine nuts which were a staple in most Roman soldiers’ diets. Relatively fast growing, the tree often grows 1 meter per year. The tree will reach full maturity between 20 to 30 years old.Once established, the Pinus Pinea Full Standard tree requires only minimal care to thrive and keep its shape. It is highly drought tolerant and can withstand salt spray in coastal regions. Plant the Italian stone pine in full sun for best growth results. It prefers a planting location with well-draining soil. The tree grows best in acidic soil but will withstand alkaline soil. It grows well in coastal areas because it doesn’t mind salt spray. Italian Stone Pine trees produce an abundance of bright green stiff needles that measure up to 15 centimetres in length. The needles appear in twisted bundles. The bluish-grey cones of the tree measure about 15 centimetres in length and are heavy. They remain tightly closed for about three years before opening to disperse their seeds.Pinus Pinea Full Standard has a stand-out showy trunk, enhanced by the full standard clear stem shape of these specimens. The trunk features an orange hue with large plates that measure about 33 centimetres in length. They are showcased by deep dark fissures. The plates provide visual interest on the tree. The Italian stone pine does tolerate pruning well, making it a good candidate for growing as a full standard tree. It requires minimal pruning once per year to keep its shape. Ideally, pruning should take place in the winter months.Statuesque and interesting year round, the Italian Stone Pine full standard tree makes an ideal garden focal point. It grows well in urban settings and can be grown as a street tree. This hardy Pine Nut tree is just one of the varieties in our huge collection of specialist conifers for sale at Paramount Plants in North London.

Ilex X Koehneana Chestnut Leaf Holly. Chestnut Holly

Ilex X Koehneana Chestnut Leaf Holly. Chestnut Holly

Ilex X KoehneanaChestnut Leaf Holly holds the RHS Award of Merit and is one of the best hollies for berry production, especially when grown in a sunny position. It’s very accommodating and takes well to clipping so it’s a good choice for hedging or grown as a full standard tree in more compact gardens.Ilex X Koehneana has pale grey-green stems and foliage that’s chestnut leaf shaped - hence it’s common name ‘chestnut holly’. Individual leaves are glossy mid-green and reach up to 15 cm with serrated edges that are less prickly than traditional hollies.Small white flowers appear in mid-spring that are very attractive to pollinators. These are followed by a profusion of crimson-red berries in late autumn.Standard trees will eventually develop a pyramidal shape with downward sweeping leaves. Chestnut holly hedging shrubs grow bushy and dense but are easily clipped into shape. This is a female holly that bears berries and will pollinate from any nearby male holly such as Ilex Meserveae Blue Prince.Height and Spread Of Ilex X KoehneanaA standard tree will reach between 4 to 8 metres tall and 2 to 4 metres wide at the crown. Hedging shrubs can be kept to preferred height and spread with regular clipping. How Hardy Are Ilex X KoehneanaChestnut holly is a hardy plant that’s tough enough to withstand UK weather conditions. It prefers warmth and sunlight but will grow in colder parts of the UK down to sub-zero temperatures. It is drought tolerant and pest resistant once established.                                                                                How To Use Ilex X KoehneanaBecause it’s an evergreen chestnut leaf holly provides a structural backdrop to all styles of gardenIt’s a good hedging choice as it stays green all year round then provides a spectacular boost of colour with its crimson berries just as the garden is fading in autumn. A pleached version of chestnut holly is a smart above fence screen that will block neighbours throughout the seasons.Plant shrubs a metre apart for a thick hedge and clip them after the berries have fallen during mid-winter or early spring.Chestnut Leaf holly also makes a head-turning no-effort-required specimen tree that provides shelter and food to wildlife 12 months of the year. How To Care For Ilex X KoehneanaChestnut holly ideally prefers a sunny, sheltered spot so choose a south-facing, draught and frost-pocket free space if you can. This will promote strong growth, flowers and fruits, however, this is a tough plant that will grow in exposed conditions and all types of soil except waterlogged ground.Once planted it’s important to water chestnut holly regularly until established. A good thick layer of mulch around the base during spring locks in moisture and provides nutrients for a healthy season of growth.
