Malus Domestica Royal Gala or Royal Gala Espaliered Apple TreeThe Royal Gala Apple is a popular dessert apple grown across the UK. Since first introduced to commercial plantings in the UK during the 1980’s, it now constitutes more than 20% of our commercially grown apples. Our Royal Gala Apples are sold as an Espaliered Apple Tree to be grown in 2-tiers, and is especially suited when planted on a wall where space may be limited. Royal Gala is a variety of Malus Domestica, classified as a dessert cultivar in pollination group 4. It is known for its heavy yield of small fruit, and has a very sweet honey accented flavour.The term espaliered is in reference to training the tree so as to grow against a wall. This management technique allows for easier access for pruning and harvesting. It is very decorative, once often used in walled kitchen gardens. It is perfect for growing fruit trees with limited space. Trees should be planted 3.5m-6m apart, depending on their vigour.The Royal Gala apple variety is a member of the Rosaceae (Rose) family and the Genus Malus. It is a small to medium sized deciduous apple tree. Known for its beautiful, showy flowers in the spring, Royal Gala produces a smallish, dense, sweet, and aromatic fruit with a white coloured flesh and round shape.With origins in New Zealand where the Gala apple tree was first developed by crossing a Golden Delicious and a Kidd’s Orange Red in the 1930’s by J.H. Kidd. The cultivar Royal Gala was patented by Donald W. McKenzie of Stark Nursery in 1974. The Royal Gala is known to be a more highly coloured form of the original Gala Apple.Malus Domestica Royal Gala prefers full sun to partial shade.  A south or west facing aspect with a sheltered exposure is best. The soil should be well-drained but with good moisture holding capacity. Preferred soil textures range from loam to clay to sand and its preferred soil pH is neutral.  The Royal Gala can be a very productive, beautiful tree grown on your wall garden. It is hardy to zone H-6, and has a deciduous habit and a bushy appearance.The fruit of the Royal Gala is small but plentiful and can be stored from October to January.
