Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies is a cross between Magnolia Acuminata and Magnolia Denudata to create a true yellow flowering Magnolia. This beautiful specimen usually forms as a small tree. With striking, primrose yellow blossoms and a compact, pyramidal form, this ornamental tree is an excellent candidate for a specimen tree.Same as its close relatives from the Magnolia family, the Butterfly variety is grown for its gorgeous, fragranced blossoms. It has yellow, loosely star-shaped scented flowers that appear in March to April, well before the leaves emerge, giving a fabulous display. The upright, non-fading blossoms of Magnolia Butterflies have a pleasant, citrus scent, and look particularly elegant and graceful against bare branches. After the abundant flowering season ends, elliptic, dark green leaves unfold, providing interest through to autumn.Although Butterfly Magnolia appears delicate, this elegant deciduous tree is actually quite robust. It can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees, and it’s fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. However, this cultivar appreciates a sheltered position, as late frosts or strong winds might damage the flower buds. Growing Tip: Magnolia Butterflies prefers a well drained acidic soil, can grow up to  4-5m tall and 4-5m wide. Adaptable to clay and sandy soils, as long as the soil is not overly wet. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade and is full hardy.Even though it can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub, Butterfly Magnolia is at its best when cultivated as an ornamental tree, with a single trunk and a pyramidal crown. To ensure that this ornamental tree is in great shape, prune regularly in mid-summer to early autumn, to avoid bleeding of the sap. To restrain the size of this cultivar, thin out the shoots every few years, and routinely remove watershoots and dead or damaged stems. As it’s virtually impossible to remain indifferent to Magnolia Butterflies in full bloom, this striking tree is often a choice for a statement or a focal plant. The canary yellow, goblet-shaped flowers that envelop the bare branches of this cultivar brighten up the garden, especially if planted in a partially shaded corner. Combine Butterfly Magnolia with other acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons. Or, for a particularly dramatic effect, pink flowering varieties of Magnolia such as Magnolia Soulangeana Satisfaction.

Plant a specimen next to your patio or walkway, where the scent can waft into the house through an open window on mild days. The flower spikes are also a favourite for cut flowers and the light fragrance and elegant colour is delightful when displayed in a tall vase or as part of a bouquet.Their spiky, architectural shape makes them an excellent addition to the border especially in colour themed designs and cottage gardens. Prunus Serrulata Kanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry Tree Buy UK

Prunus serrulata Kanzan Flowering CherryConsidered one of the most popular cultivars of Japanese Cherries, Prunus serrulata Kanzan, also known as Flowering Cherry or Japanese Cherry Kanzan, is a medium-sized deciduous tree, prized for its exceptional ornamental value and impressive hardiness. It is striking when in full bloom.  In the spring, before the foliage forms, pink double flowers unfold from crimson buds. The lush blossoms consist of as many as 25-50 petals each, and they are around 5 cm wide. As a double-flowered cultivar of Japanese Cherry, this ornamental tree will hold bloom for up to 2 weeks, which is two times longer than most other varieties. Not long after the flowers emerge, serrate, ovate leaves form on the stems, bronze-brown at first, turning bright green in summer, to gold and orange shades in the fall. The vivid, dense foliage makes Prunus serrulata Kanzan highly decorative well after the flowering season ends. Japanese Cherry Kanzan is relatively adaptable, but prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil and full to partial sun. When mature, this vase-shaped tree with a spreading habit can grow to be 8 to 12 metres tall and over 8 metres wide. As with most Japanese Cherry varieties, Kanzan has an expected lifespan of around 25 years.Fully hardy in the UK, Japanese Cherry Kanzan is also a recipient of the esteemed Award of Garden Merit of Royal Horticultural Society. The vivid foliage provides summer and autumn interest, and in the winter, the split-bark appearance of mature plants holds ornamental value. As such, Japanese Cherry Kanzan is ideal as a statement or single specimen plant. With its multiple season interest, this plant can be the focus of your garden or front yard throughout the whole year.It can also be planted en masse along walks or paths, for a highly decorative flowering tree border. Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor White Pine Tree. American Conifer Firs Buy UK

Abies Concolor - The White Pine or White FirA beautiful conifer tree, the Abies Concolor tree, often known as the White Fir Tree or Concolor Fir has silvery blue glaucous foliage and is native to the mountains of western North America. It gets its name White Fir from the white colour of its bark. It has a classic Christmas tree shape and indeed the Concolor Fir is often used as a Christmas tree in America.Abies Concolor will grow steadily into a pyramid shape reaching 25 metres in height over ten to twenty years but it can be happily pruned at any height you require. Colour and height are the main reasons a gardener will choose a White Fir Tree. The Abies Concolor’s needles are a silvery-blue glaucous shade complemented by the white bark from which it draws its name. These colours are an interesting twist on the standard green fir tree.Branches fall naturally into regular horizontal fan arrangements and six to 12 centimetre sized cones develop in autumn. At first these are yellow or a light purple shade, later ripening into the traditional brown cones that release winged seeds.White Fir Trees are fully hardy throughout the UK. They are able to withstand heat as well as cold temperatures with ease if their roots are kept from waterlogged conditions.Abies Concolor make good specimen trees when they are planted out individually. In the winter months they can be decorated with outdoor lights for a traditional Christmas effect, or you can try growing one in a container to restrict its size and move it indoors for a short while. A living Christmas tree will happily move back outdoors after the festive season if it is watered well and kept away from radiators.Abies Concolor or the Concolor Fir can be used as a hedge or evergreen screening or ornamentally in a garden that needs some winter interest. Large specimens are good for landscaping designs often fulfilling both a practical and ornamental role at the same time.Large free-growing trees can reach a height of 25m but they can be kept at a manageable height by cutting the leader branch. There is no need to prune a Concolor fir other than to restrict its height because they retain a conical shape as they grow, however, keeping your white fir tree shorter will encourage bushiness.White Fir Trees perform best in rich well-drained soils that are slightly acidic but they will grow in most conditions provided the soil is not heavy clay. They appreciate full sun and mulch around their roots in spring time.Fir trees are not just for Christmas because they make interesting architectural shapes in a garden, create wildlife habitats and will boost your outdoor space with year round colour. It’s worth considering a beautiful white fir tree if you need to fill a large space or want to landscape a lengthy piece of lawn.

The Cotinus Grace, also referred to as the Smoke Bush, was obtained by crossing the  European smoke bush ( Cotinus coggygria) with the American smoke tree (Cotinus obovatus). A deciduous hybrid, the Cotinus ‘Grace’ was first developed in the 1970s at England’s Hillier Nurseries and quickly gained popularity around the world. Cotinus Grace is referred to as the smoke bush due to its fluffy pinkish plumes throughout the summer months. The Smoke Bush is a garden gem that provides year round visual interest. During the early spring months, its emerging oval-shaped foliage appears almost iridescent in shades of green with a slight red shimmering overcast. In the summer, fluffy pink flower plumes appear that give the shrub a smoky appearance. To many people, the flower plumes give the shrub the visual illusion of being engulfed in endless clouds of pink all summer. A deciduous bush, in the autumn the shrub’s foliage turns a bright red and orange before falling from the bush. The Cotinus Grace usually grows to a height of between 3 to 4.5 meters with a similar spread. Its ideal size makes it a favourite border shrub. When fully grown, the Smoke Bush forms a mounding appearance which also makes it a perfect focal point shrub in any cottage garden, formal landscape or urban setting.Plant the Cotinus ‘Grace’ in full sunlight for the best colouration, but it will grow in partial shade. Once established, the Smoke Bush is exceptionally hardy and can withstand periods of drought. Plant in a location with well-draining soil, although the Smoke Tree is tough and will grow even in infertile soil with rocky conditions. It is also deer resistant and suffers from very few pests or diseases. After planting, the Smoke Bush requires little care and needs no pruning. Syringa Vulgaris or Common Lilac for Sale Buy Online UK

Syringa Vulgaris or Common Lilac for Sale Buy Online UK

Syringa Vulgaris or the Common Lilac, was a staple of British gardens in the 20th century but it fell out of fashion in the 1960s. These beautiful deciduous shrubs are rapidly making a comeback because of their stunning flowers and easy growth habit. Originally introduced as far back as the 16th century, Common Lilac is today very much a heritage plant back in fashion. The vast range of garden lilacs originated from this plant. In spring Common Lilac sprouts fresh new light-green foliage. These oval leaves with a pointed tip measure 2-12 cms in length and remain in place until the frosts of winter, but it is during May that Common Lilac comes into its own with masses of highly-scented light purple flowers. Syringa Vulgaris blooms grow as tiny, densely packed flowers hanging down in 8-18cms panicles. Butterflies and bees love lilac as it provides nectar throughout the summer. Lilac rivals buddleja as a butterfly bush. The glorious blooms ripen into winged seeds pods measuring around 1-2 cms long, which split open in autumn and release helicopter seeds.Height and Spread of Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is a fast-growing shrub or small tree that will reach a maximum height of six metres and spread over three metres within twenty years. It can be kept smaller with regular pruning. How Hardy is Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is a very hardy shrub that will survive sub-zero UK winters if its roots are kept from waterlogged soils. How To Use Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac can be grown anywhere, but it does need some space to ensure it doesn’t crowd out less vigorous plants. As a specimen shrub or tree that’s cut back each year it is stunning, particularly older specimens that develop a twisted, gnarled rugged bark.  Common Lilac can also be used as a flowering hedge or partition to mark areas of the garden. If you want to grow Lilac in a container it’s best to choose a smaller, more compact variety such as Syringa Meyeri Palibin. How To Care For Syringa VulgarisCommon Lilac is very easy to grow. It prefers full sun but is happy in partial shade too, and any garden soil is suitable, including chalky soils as long as it drains well. Some people are put off lilacs because they can become bushy and leggy, but this is easily avoided with yearly pruning. In its winter dormancy cut back a third of the new branch growth. A third is enough as it flowers on last year’s wood. Annual pruning ensures a bigger, better flower display as well as containing its height.Syringa Vulgaris is a colourful and deliciously scented garden shrub that deserves more use. It is one of the easiest to grow and puts on a stunning flower display in spring.

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom. Shrubs and Hedges to buy online UK

Escallonia Apple Blossom is a low growing evergreen useful for low hedges and as ornamental shrubs.  Beautiful pink flowers resembling apple blossom in late summer / autumn months. It produces candy pink lush flowers between summer and autumn. The flowers resemble the shape of a tube with a white centre surrounded by deep green, small, and glossy leaves. With its sturdy stems, the plant grows gracefully forming a bushy and dense shrub. It can be planted alongside other perennials and shrubs. It can also be planted as a hedge in coastal climates to act as a windbreaker. Escallonia Apple Blossom grows exceptionally well in sunny spots. To plant it, dig a deep, large hole that can accommodate the plant’s root ball. Without disturbing the soil around the roots, take the plant out of its pot and place it at the bottom of the hole ensuring the plant’s crown is level with the ground. The roots need to be in direct contact with the soil while sitting at the same depth as it was in the container. Cover the hole with soil and gently firm it in before pouring water to allow the soil to settle around the roots. This plant is easy to care for and requires little maintenance. Mulch the plant during summer and remove dead blooms to encourage the plant to flower again.Water the plant regularly during the first weeks of planting and during summer. However, do not over water because as the plant continues to grow the roots go further down in search of moisture. Like other evergreens, Escallonia apple blossom requires pruning to maintain the shape of the plant. This plant can grow to four feet tall and is perfect for a small garden. The plant thrives in an open and sunny climate and works well with roses and other shrubs. In addition, it does well in acidic or mildly alkaline well-drained soil. The plant is resistant to salt spray, drought and wind, but does not do well in extremely cold and dry environments. Acer Griseum Paper Bark Maple Trees To Buy Online UK & Irl

Acer Griseum, commonly known as the Paper Bark Maple is a deciduous tree that has peeling papery light brown bark. This bark looks stunning with the dark green three lobed shaped leaves that appear in early spring. In autumn, this beautiful specimen showcases a fabulous display of rich autumn colours with the leaves progressively turning yellow, orange and then deepest red.  Acer Griseum is a beautiful specimen that will add a splash of colour to your garden throughout the seasons. Even during the bleak days of winter, after the tree has lost its foliage, it still makes an interesting garden specimen because of its diverse bark that stands out in stark contrast to the landscape. Acer griseum produces an eye-catching rounded globe-shaped canopy. It has an open growth habit. As the tree ages, the bark on the trunk starts to peel in paper lengths to reveal the tree’s new cinnamon bark. In the spring months, the tree produces tiny yellow flowers that are followed by winged seeds known as ‘samara’ which the wind blows to various locations. However, the seeds produced by today’s  Acer griseum trees are normally sterile so will not produce unwanted seedlings. The Paper Bark Maple grows best in full or partial sunlight. It likes well-draining moist soil. During extreme heat it prefers additional watering. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the tree will help keep the soil moist during the height of summer. The Acer griseum prefers acidic soil but will cope well in any well drained fertile planting site. It will tolerate clay conditions if the clay readily drains. During the spring months, fertilize with a general purpose fertilizer to promote new growth. The Acer griseum is native to China and was first introduced to Europe by seeds brought from China by Jesuit Missionaries. It was later introduced to the United States by E.H. Wilson in 1901. Mr. Wilson worked through the Arnold Arboretum.  The Paper Bark Maple has a maximum height 5m with a spread 3m over 50 years. Its small stature makes it ideal for most gardens and landscapes.
